National to spend at least $30m to reverse speed limit changes if elected
  • Considering how windy that road is I really don't get why the locals went so feral about it being lowered. Even the straighter bits of roads have enough of an up-and-down that you can't see oncoming traffic so you can't overtake slower vehicles.

  • What have you changed about your lifestyle to deal with the cost of living increases?
  • I changed to a super cheap mobile plan recently, since I'm usually on wifi and don't actually make calls so I really don't need much in that regard.

I've also just cancelled my kobo sub and have been going to the library. I mostly used kobo for indie authors so the library is a nice change of pace.

  • That would definitely do the job for bugs; we went heavy duty because we have no fence on that side of the property and people like to walk on the inside of the street trees instead of right on the kerb. The second photo here is what we went for.

It's always worth hitting that Quote button; worst case you'll have a much better idea of how soon you can save up for one.

  • We got a sliding screen door fitted over our ranch slider before last summer. We went for the marine grade steel security mesh so technically we could sleep with the door open (but I'm not game enough to try it deliberately) and it made a huge difference. It was about $1500 and a morning off work while they installed it.

  • 1936 brick Ashburton building to be torn down for car park
  • I hope they're pressured into doing something decent with the carpark, like putting in trees and footpaths between the rows. Or making it multi-storey so they can stop wasting other space elsewhere. (As if)

  • Yeah, my original plan involved a lot of very angry rock music but I managed to somehow lose the silicon bit of my earbuds so had to listen to my own Darth Vader impression heading up instead.

The rest of the weekend will be much better, just with added leg aches. I didn't realise how seriously unfit I am!

  • Everyone I know has gone to the Kaikoura Hop today, except me. I used all the feelings of neglect and abandonment to propel me up a steep hill in a fit of 'well fuck you all' but it only lasted halfway and then my calves were like, 'well actually, fuck you.'

5.6km later I'm too tired to care about not being invited so it kinda worked. And I set a terrible benchmark time that I'm determined to beat so I'll definitely be grumping my way around the same loop at some point, lol.

  • I honestly have no idea but I've tried three different bottles and each one was terrible - coffee and the rest of the milk both ended up down the drain. It's almost like they leave the bottles in the sun for a bit before delivering them.

  • So far, the nz.general page is full of posts from a conspiracy nut banging on about who invented covid and other assorted bollocks, and the nz.arts has been taken over by one person posting their poetry.

This lemmy instance is definitely a much better place to hang out.

  • So with all the nostalgia for Web 1.0 lately I signed up for an account on eternal-september and now I'm trying to remember all the usenet groups I used to be obsessed with oh, about 25 years ago.

  • I have weeded things and raked other things. Then raked some more, just because the sun is out and I can go at my own pace (i.e. I'm the only one home today so no witnesses to the wonky-ass way I do things).

More than anything else, I wish I could afford to work four days a week because Wednesdays off is the greatest discovery of my adulthood, lol.

  • I had my old car for four years before I realised that the random hole in the side of the glovebox was an aux plug for the stereo. I'd been putting up with shitty FM transmitters the whole time.

Congrats on the unexpected shower upgrade, especially BEFORE you dropped the dosh on a new one. We put one of those shower heads in a few months ago and it's amazing.

  • Why New Zealand banks need to drop mortgage rates
  • France passed a law last year that all carparks that hold more than 60 cars must have solar installed overhead and I'm so hoping that happens here. Parking out of the sun all day would be brilliant, since we seem to love big sprawling ground floor carparks.

Change is happening, just not fast enough for NZ to catch on.

    Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

    So, how’s it going?

Warning from Malwarebytes about a compromised instance?

I really wish I knew more about this stuff, but every time I switch from Local to Subscribed Malwarebytes gives me a popup warning me that lemmy.world is compromised and blocked (even though I'm still seeing posts from communities there) but that's all it's telling me. Should I be avoiding that instance?
