  • Most comments seem to be focused on the logistics of applying and financial concerns. Those are important, but before that I would strongly suggest you evaluate your reasons for doing the program and understand your commitment. For one, interviews and applications will want to know this anyway, and two, these reasons can be tested when things get difficult.

A few insights: school has changed in the last few decades. Things are more lean and there is more expected from students. A big divide if you consider a PhD program is whether it is a researched based (eg R1) or teaching school. A research based school is more competitive and honestly feels like a business sometimes. How many papers can you crank out? Can you devote extra time to helping research professors so that you get better opportunities?

There is a changing (and unclear) landscape of software. Sources libraries and PDF organizers can be helpful. Most the students I know are using some form of AI to read or write papers, and they make edits and such. There is ongoing debate on the ethics, but people are using it regardless. If the precedent becomes writing papers at the efficiency of using AI to structure the papers, the level of expectations again rises.

Also be sure to have a support system in place. Things can get overwhelming and frustrating, and leaning on people when needed will be important.

Start with really pondering your reasons for doing the program and see if a program would fit those needs. And it would be a great idea to reach out to current students at least a couple of different schools to get their input on how the program is. There is only so much you can gain from reading the website. If it is really what you want to do, start looking at the requirements and email the program director or assistant to see if you’re missing anything.

  • Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll definitely check that out! I found that when searching for “philosophy,” I get a lot of history of philosophy, and the ones that do bring new discussions are not usually picking themes that in all that interested in.

Not a book, but a podcast recommendation

I have been listening to the podcast Twenty Thousand Hertz, which picks a sound or music (eg music of Hans Zimmer) and the host recommended another podcast called Imaginary Worlds. I cannot get enough of it. The host picks a topic and usually has guests to discuss it (eg Terri Pratchett’s Discworld, or how Norse mythology permeates present day).

The show tickles my sense for philosophy by asking really open-ended and thought-provoking questions. And the host quite often has a books or movies that I would have never otherwise heard of, such as Octavia Butler- Lilith’s Brood (aka Xenogensis) and Dora Raymaker - Resonance; which explore the experiences of black and autistic authors, respectively, and how that shapes the stories they create.

Not many things prompt me to think outside of the box like this show. I just wanted to share, in case anyone else could enjoy it as much as I am.

  • If you’re on iOS, Arctic made some big updates that make it arguably better than Voyager IMO. The biggest thing that got me was color picker themes, so you can literally make your own theme (and save and share them). Also the markdown is pretty great now. Voyager is still pretty solid and very good performance and features.

Do I really need DOCSIS 3.1 modem?

I’m not sure where else best to post this, so please direct me if there is somewhere more appropriate.

I’m looking at getting cable again and still have a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. It looks like the biggest limiting factor is the speed but there are other mentions of “improved latecy and power comsumption.” If I’m not get a speed that exceeds 1Gbps, is the latency that much better for $160? I game a little online but hadnt noticed an issue in the past.

For that matter, is an AC wireless router is fine? The AX or Wifi 6 looked neat, but I’m just not sure the benfits are worth the cost. Any input is appreciated.

  • I have to somewhat agree with the author. My experience and understanding of depression is that it is more of a (sometimes very persistent) symptom than an underlying cause. Ideally, we would all have the guidance to deal with depressing scenarios, but similar to dissociation during trauma, our mind defaults back to disconnection to limit the pain.

I’m not saying this is every case, but I do think as a society we could view depression more as a coping strategy, and try to replace it with healthier practices. After time, it takes more time and effort and support to replace those coping strategies, but that is essentially what psychotherapy does.

I think too often in the modern world people tend to just shrug and say “this is who I am,” instead of trying to improve their coping skills and quality of life. Like another commentor mentions, this becomes a feedback loop of depression feeding depression and takes immense support and effort to curve and should absolutely not be shamed.

  • I guess if the VPN speeds were fine, if there were drops in connection, and whether you can manually choose a location.

Have you used the cloud service for photo backup? I currently have an iPhone and it sounds neat to switch to bundling Proton and dropping the iCloud subscription.

I’d probably just use Proton’s mail app on mobile. It’s actually pretty snappy and intuitive, and it has always had the basic features I need.

I’ve been using Express and had a great experience so far, but I may want to try a Proton subscription for cloud space and more emails. It also comes with a VPN service but I’m a little leary on trying something new. Any thoughts on Proton VPN?

  • I also work 3x12s and mostly love having the 4 days off. The downside is being able to do virtually nothing on those days besides eat and sleep. I think one advantage of the 9-5 week is being able to still do a few things more often. It’s hard to practice hobbies and maintain the house with gaps on days that I’m working.

What you value changes slightly as time goes on. Having the more consistent day might be more appealing now. And if you dont like it, there are always nurse jobs that are in need. Maybe there is something in between the hospital and that gig, like dialysis nursing. Worth a try.

  • For sure, it’s difficult to break that cycle of anxiety. It has been helpful to understand it a little better. I think out of the strategies that she lists at the end, the one about challenging your assumptions has helped the most. I kind of imagine what advice I would give myself in that moment or what I would challenge someone else on.

  • I tried some Anker Liberty 4 earbuds and have found the ANC pretty good. They do stick out a bit so lying on your side wouldnt work, but there are these smaller ANC earbuds from Anker that might be worth a try: https://a.co/d/ggtEPov

  • What is the overall goal to teach them? Do they need to be journal articles? The most “grabby” headliners I have noticed are on marketing items. Especially if you want to appeal to a younger audience, you could screenshot examples from Snapchat tabloids. “Top 17 ways to get your SO to notice you more,” “Prince Harry did the unthinkable,” “How to instantly cut fat out of your diet,” etc.

Their goal is to “hook” you into reading or scrolling or watching. Journal articles might do this on a much milder scale. “Novel method for disposing of plastics.” So you think: Novel? Must be revolutionary. Let’s find out.

    Idk I hope that helps.

collapsed comment count overlaps with upvote/downvote count

It looks like it may be happening because I have commenters’ instances visible and larger text size selected. Not the worst thing, just minorly inconvenient.

I am still thoroughly enjoying the app and use it pretty frequently. @gromdroid I hope you get the chance to continue refining it as time and life permits. Thanks again for your efforts.

  • That’s a good question. From what I gather, Lemmy (and most of the Fediverse) is an alternative to something, with less focus on the money/advertising. So I would guess most people are looking for an alternative way to connect about common interests. And because it’s not the easiest path for social media, I would guess most people have a desire for agency/self-reliance.

And because the whole Fediverse seems to be a different way of approaching social connecting, it takes a little more understanding of computer technology, so I would also guess most people have a least a higher than average affinity for computer technology. Linux and Programming Humor are larger communities.

That said, I have enjoyed a somewhat active participation about woodworking, gardening, jokes, news, medical updates, etc. Like mentioned in another comment, the different instances will have somewhat different norms and practices.

  • I guess not something that I would change, but I’m very glad we started with a marriage counselor. We did not have any overbearing concerns, but it has been immensely helpful in understanding each other and having a healthier relationship. Sometime people get weird and say “Oh no, a counselor, what’s wrong with your relationship.” Nothing. That is the point. Talk to one to get a baseline and when (not if) challenges come up, you don’t have to waste sessions filling them on your back story. Honestly, I think it should be required to do like three sessions before signing the papers, if nothing else to have someone point some things out that youre blind to otherwise about yourself.

  • As someone who cares for elderly people sometimes, please please fill out an advanced directive (not just a living will). It’s a sort of “if this, then that” for health scenarios. It’s immensely helpful when when caring for someone not well, and can be much more stressful without one. I have had dying, incapacitated patients wait weeks for guardianship or POA-HC to be processed before care can be changed to comfort measures, because they did not have one on file.

Get one from the hospital you would likely go to, fill it out, give them a copy, keep a copy, and give a copy to who you list as a decision-maker. You do not want to add the stress of logistics to an emotionally difficult time.

I think as a society we should embrace death more. Pretending it doesn’t happen just makes things worse when that reality of mortality unwaveringly stares you in the face.

  • Try Lemma if you’re on iOS. It’s very smooth and has the right balance of features and simplicity imo.

  • I’m not sure what you’re using it for, but I use an ebook reader called eBoox. It’s free with no ads, not sure if open-source. I had bookmarks but I don’t think annotations. I like it because it can open my epub, mobi, and pdf books, change the font and font size, sepia and night modes, has many options for how to change the page, and fairly simple UI. The creator markets it as a cutesy cat thing, but that is only present on the initial setup and then it’s just a regular e-reader app.

What do you really enjoy doing?

I recently started learning hand tool woodworking and won’t shut up about it haha. I found a few books and channels that are helpful and feel real. The more I do it, the more it’s apparent to me that many things around me are just distractions. It’s really nice to unplug from everything and make some things or practice using/sharpening my tools. Those little moments when something clicks feel weirdly fulfilling.

I first just want to say thanks again for putting the time and effort that goes into making Lemma. It’s still my main Lemmy app.

I just noticed after making a post a few minutes ago that the post in-app shows a much old timer. For example, I posted about 7 minutes ago (which shows on the browser) but Lemma shows 6h. The post prior to that one showed something like 12h when I first posted it. Is that maybe referencing when the server synced or how ever that works between instances? Those were both posts to instances other than my home one.

Edit: I tried it on the same instance has my home instance and similarly got 6h ago

Help with a simple and private phone

Hi everyone, I’m looking to possibly simply my smartphone setup. I would really love to keep it as a utility: phone, text, camera, GPS, web browser, notes, email, music player. Im think of switching to local NextCloud backup system as well. I currently have an iPhone but used to flash ROMs on Android phones, so I would be willing to do that again for more privacy options and less unnecessary changes to the OS.

I have looked a little into it, and I’m wondering about getting a couple year old Pixel and putting GrapheneOS on it. I also searched a little and came across the Purism Librem 5 that has physical kill switches and sounds neat; a little pricy but I’d be willing to pay if it lasts a while and has good privacy options.

What are your thoughts? Are there other hardware suggestions or setups that you like? The idea of FOSS is appealing because it seems like the money aspect seems to skew the priority of smartphones.

    Things I Like:

    • The new icon and color options are cool!
    • Multi-communities!
    • Still love the sepia theme and comment cascade color options.
    • The gif scrubber is always super helpful, and it feels a bit more tuned now and not so sensitive (some short gifs before were really touchy to scrub).

    • I’m not sure if it was present before, but the Mod, Admin, Dev tags are very nice.

    • The Tap to Collapse toggle can be set to only comments. I like this because I never really need to close a post and accidentally close it trying to click a link in the post.
    • The Lemma scroll distance was a fun little finding.

    Things that didn’t work:

    • I could not logout of my account. I added a second account from another instance (I didn’t see a toggle to switch between, I think it just logged in “overtop” of my first account). I was able to remove the second account, but whe

After first trying Mlem, Memmy was my main Lemmy app for a good while, until I have been trying out some other ones. Coming back to using Memmy, I am pretty happy how well-rounded it is.

For me, the most important things are functionality and readability. The customization and font options are very nice. I especially like having a theme like the Golden Hour that is easier on the eyes, and still get to pick a theme color! With the red, it gives me a chocolate factory vibe that I enjoy.

The automatic reader mode for links is great for minimizing distractions on links, ability for switching feed link icons to the right is nice for being a lefty phone user, and the icon options are nice to have. The actual communities’ pages having the banner makes it feel more complete. The markdown editor seems well done and the Jump button is great for reading efficiently. The concise UI is very pleasant. Some thoughts for Hawbee-ists

Howdy Beehaw, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately and wanted to share some thoughts. I’ve been having these strange little epiphanies that many things today just don’t seem to fit right. Like at least in the US, everyone is working so hard just to get to this fictitious level of “success” that finally means “you’ve made it,” i.e. finally making enough income to have a decent work/life balance. But it from what I see, often people need to take out a large school loan to do that, pay it off seemingly forever, and there never seems to be a real point of “made it.”

I took a vacation to much more relaxed, beachside spot and saw how the locals were living. Basically off the grid, get fruit at the little market, fix things or trade things. Everyone seem to have this collectivism that felt really connected. No one was money rich, but everyone had this peace about them that almost felt fake to me at first. And then I went down this whole rabbit hole of “why do I need money anyway?”

There are no notes or messages from the seller, so I’m not really sure what happened. Should I message the seller? Report that I haven’t received the order? hardened cross cut saw or steel that can be sharpened?

    Hi everyone,

I’m slowly getting into the craft of woodworking and I’m trying to pick out some “starter” tools. I don’t want to go completely cheap but I don’t want to spend all kinds of money (yet).

I was set on getting a cross cut panel saw for ripping and cross cutting (until I get a ripping saw) and a fine tooth pull saw for more accurate cuts.

    My questions for recommendations are:

    1. Should I get a hardened cross cut saw and just use it until it’s junk or get one I can sharpen?
    2. Can hardened carbon steel chisels be sharpened or are they also “disposable”?
    3. Is it better just to get a “dovetail” saw than a fine tooth pull for small, accurate cuts such as a joint?
    4. On a different note, is a #4 planer the best to start with? A few videos recommend that over a #5 because a #4 is easier for smoothing.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I know I’ll have to just try a few things and see what works best, but I’m trying to be wise with what I get.
