Ted Sarandos, a co-chief executive of Netflix, said the Argentinian science fiction series El Eternauta (The Eternaut) was the first it had made that involved using generative AI footage.

He said the series, which follows survivors of a rapid and devastating toxic snowfall, involved Netflix and visual effects (VFX) artists using AI to show a building collapsing in Buenos Aires.

“Using AI-powered tools, they were able to achieve an amazing result with remarkable speed and, in fact, that VFX sequence was completed 10 times faster than it could have been completed with traditional VFX tools and workflows,” he said.

He said the use of AI tools allowed Netflix to fund the show at a much lower cost than is typical for a big-budget production.

“The cost of [the special effects without AI] just wouldn’t have been feasible for a show in that budget,” Sarandos said.

Inflation shot up in June as the impacts of Donald Trump’s tariffs slowly started to show in US prices.

Business leaders have said for months that the high, volatile rates of Trump’s tariffs will force companies to raise consumer prices. Prices remained stable in the spring, particularly as many of Trump’s highest tariffs were paused; however, they started increasing in May and have continued to rise in June.

Annual inflation rose to 2.7% in June, up from 2.4% in May, according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks the prices of a basket of goods and services each month. Core CPI, which leaves out energy and food prices, ticked up slightly to 2.9%, compared with 2.8% in May.

The prices of appliances, furniture and toys, products typically manufactured outside the US, all rose. Food prices increased by 3%, with the price of beef rising by more than 2% over the month, coffee up 2.2% and citrus fruit prices rising 2.3%. While the price of eggs has been dropping over th

After largest U.S. teacher's union cuts ties with ADL, head of second largest union rejects 'isolation'

The NEA, the largest labor union in the U.S., passed a resolution last Sunday at its Representative Assembly in Portland, Oregon, calling for an end to its relationship with the ADL. The resolution directs the union to stop using or endorsing ADL materials, reports, or programs. Supporters said the ADL had used accusations of antisemitism to discredit critics of Israel and advocates for Palestinian rights.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, the second largest union in the U.S. with 1.7 million members, has issued a response to last week's vote by the National Education Association to cut ties with the Anti-Defamation League, saying engagement, not isolation, is the way forward.

Weingarten, who is Jewish and has long been outspoken on issues of antisemitism and Middle East policy, has walked a fine line in recent years, calling out anti-Jewish hate while also pushing for a two-state solution and Palestinian rights.

Judge Orders Trump Administration to Halt Indiscriminate Immigration Stops, Arrests in California

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A federal judge on Friday ordered the Trump administration to halt indiscriminate immigration stops and arrests in seven California counties, including Los Angeles.

Immigrant advocacy groups filed the lawsuit last week accusing President Donald Trump’s administration of systematically targeting brown-skinned people in Southern California during its ongoing immigration crackdown. The plaintiffs include three detained immigrants and two U.S. citizens, one of whom was held despite showing agents his identification.

The filing in U.S. District Court asked a judge to block the administration from using what they call unconstitutional tactics in immigration raids. Immigrant advocates accuse immigration officials of detaining someone based on their race, carrying out warrantless arrests, and denying detainees access to legal counsel at a holding facility in downtown LA.

  • For all this AI BS we're going through, why is there not one to actually automate budgeting. Of all the fucking apps they're shoving down people's throats, the one thing I've been waiting for still hasn't come. Wtf.

I really need it, anything that doesn't automatically pull in transactions reliably, between multiple accounts and reconciles transactions between them (matching a 10.39 transaction on one of my privacy cards to the corresponding bank pull transaction) is just gonna fall apart for me in a matter of months. (At best)

Envelopes, spreadsheets, YNAB, Quicken all have been tried, all got forgotten about -_-

  • I'm not super familiar with OBS for... actually capturing/streaming games, but if you add a new source of "Game Capture", select your game window and the check the "Capture Audio" option it should work. Though I see it is marked as beta lol

  • .world is fine for the most part, a lot of us are just trying to keep things more distributed amongst smaller instances so that not any one instance can overly dominate with many large comms.

It helps keep things healthier overall for the Threadiverse

  • Well I did crosspost it, it shows in the crosspost chain view

But this was crossposted as part of ongoing boycotting/protest efforts to reduce the influence of .ml comms because of the behavior of the .ml instance admins to make it an easier decision for other instance admins to defederate

    Some highlights from the link:

"Don't worry guys, the Uyghur Genocide was REALLY just birth control! ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/30580167

"See! nobody died IN Tiananmen Square, just AROUND it, so it doesn't count!!" ~ Davel, .ml admin https://lemmy.world/post/30673342

.ml admin, Nutomics continued transphobia https://lemmy.world/post/29222558 ::: spoiler CW: Original transphobic Comment from Nutomic

    :::

"NK is actually good and anything counter to that is Western propaganda!" ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/31595035

General negative sentiment to other instances who haven't "seen the way" yet ~davel, .ml admin https://lemmy.world/post/27426510

"If you don't support Russia then you just don't understand geopolitics" ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/27352415

  • That's why Trump admin officials are saying this, they know this is what will probably happen LMAO

Honestly, if this finally breaks the 2-party system in the US I'd be happy.

Imagine Muskrat pouring billions into getting RCV or something passed in the majority of states...and then still losing lolol

  • It was established 2 years ago, before the concerns for .world becoming so big started really cropping up

Plus, there's really nothing wrong with .world having some big comms, the real issue is them having the bulk of the big comms

  • This was one mod on one comm, if it's a good or bad mod decision I won't comment on. But poor mod decisions can happen any time anywhere.

The problem with .ml is the fact that it's the admins micromanaging across the entire instance in order to push a political narrative. Nearly all mod actions in the .ml modlog is from 2 admins and shows a clear bias to push their ideology, leveraging their notoriety to do it and allowing known misinformation outlets' "articles" to fester while surprising criticism from credible outlets.

  • That's not "literally advertising", that's an Easter egg, a very subtle hint or maybe even "coded language"

In any case, it requires the person encountering it to already have a concept of it and background knowledge to some degree.

This isn't the 90's/early 2000s anymore where there were only a few TLDs to go around, back then encountering .ml would have lead to a line of questioning like you say.

But not today, today the average user doesn't question the TLD anymore (as long as it's not one frequently associated with "scams" like .xyz) because there's just so many of them ranging from .io to .AI to .shop and .network

  • If I was proficient enough in Rust, I would have, or someone else would have long ago if it wasn't written in Rust

Rust isn't exactly a very popular language in open source right now due to its difficulty

  • The spread of Russian propaganda and misinformation is in large part the reason for a lot of the right-wing BS. There's been articles and documentation of their Misinformation campaign for at least a decade now

"Russia, shit military, fantastic intelligence service" ~A lemming comment I read once but can't find again

We should not be a party to it's continuing spread

  • What censorship? I have documented evidence of .ml's rampant censorship

If .world is doing their own flavor then where's the receipts?

Also, .world doesn't need .ml, nobody needs .ml, they only have like 2 comms that don't have a non.ml variant that beats them in MAUs
