  • Damn, all the going ons have been really affecting me recently. The kid getting stabbed on Monday night was the straw that broke the camels back. Of course people have been stabbed since the invention of stabbing instruments, and it happens in every suburb, city, country, and in every decade, year, and (seemingly) month, but it's pretty shit that it all seems to be happening right around my area

This one, and the one that happened in sunshine a month ago are particularly affecting me because on top of them happening in my area, they're both my age too. I'm probably sounding kind of entitled/selfish but it's just a hard nut to swallow that they were my age doing the same thing I do several times a week, then someone decided to just.. end them... Forever gone, all that potential just lost for good

  • Impatiently waits for breakfast. Construction hours can eat a dick.

    • That's a really difficult situation and I feel for you. Both you and she deserve a home to feel safe and secure in but sometimes these needs conflict and there's no easy way to resolve it. I don't know what the solution is. If it were me in an ideal situation I'd move, but in this housing market... Doesn't sound like there's an easy way to soundproof your place from her outbursts either.

    • lots and lots of hugs, no one should have to live with that

    • Have you tried talking to her? Asking her not to scream in the alley?

She might also have empathy to you and shared lived experience can be a good connection with people who are suffering.

  • Sitting in my Kmart oodie, drinking negroni gin, watching old episodes of the Crystal Maze and ruminating on what my life has become...this is a whole mood.

  • Fuck yea drinking duty free in the shower it's like a mini hotel but at home and you have to clean it yourself but you'll get around maybe the next day maybe and there's no privacy button.

  • I think having hair supplements for a few months really helped, hair is getting a bit wild from new growth!!

  • During my haircut yesterday, (which turned out fabulous btw) I was informed that there is a massive shortage of qualified hairstylists. The lovely lady doing my hair was the only one there and has bookings until Feb of next year. astonishing.

  • Was waiting for another community member to make this, have been enjoying letting more people get to be the one to make the thread.

      • It is fun. Which is why I like doing Fridays and Saturdays. Like trying to give it a bit of oomph to it. But agree more people should host as well. I’m not locking in for every Fridays and Saturdays but if no one happens to want to do it, just tag me before hand and I’ll take over.

    • If I'm ever still awake at midnight I am not functional enough to start the thread

    • I hate stepping on people's toes so I only do it if it seems like everyone's forgotten (like it's gotten to 12:30 and nobody's posted one yet)

  • For the real gist: I was trying to put what I saw travelling with my declining mum and the chaos in different words badly.

It was exhausting travelling with her and I feel bad that it was exhausting.

    • Would recommend having a chat with her GP if possible and maybe getting an assessment of her current status and a full review of her regular medication if any.
This is bearing in mind that some chronic medication causes outward signs that can look like dementia. Lots of medications are fine by themselves, but don't combine well. A review every few years is a really really good idea. Toxicity from competing medications is a real thing and a huge problem for older people, particularly those who trust their doctor a bit more than they maybe should. Include any herbal supplements or vitamins in that list of medications. Some of these don't play nicely with each other either.

    • It definitely sounds like something you should bring up with her GP or some other medical professional asap.

      • Yea. Had a chat before and said the crew staff were worried and checking on you because they hadn't seen someone do that (snatch a boarding pass) before (as we know QANTAS folk are old and been there for a while) and she was offended and said 'it's always my fault'.

I feel bad for bringing it up. The hostess at he end said she (mum) was so sweet.

I'm going to have to adjust how I approach these things i think. I just didn't see it properly until now.

  • Making myself leave the house for a mini countryside drive today because I spent the last two just sitting and reading.

  • Rough second day back at work after a week off. People really missed me work-wise rip

  • Back home after a half day at work. Miserable weather out there. I did stop on the way home to turn the plastic promise notes Marketplace buyers insist on paying with into proper digital money. Not keen to go out again, but Mr Woof obviously wants to walk, the weirdo.

  • I've been practising my Irish accent. I don't know if the dog is confused or impressed when I call him "my cheeky little leprechaun".

  • Travel money update: from my research the 28 Degrees Latitude credit card is the best for credit and UBank seems to be the winner for best debit card.

Both are free to sign up for and it's always good to have multiple payment options overseas in case one fails you. Both have Google Pay/Apple Pay contactless payment options.

Both charge $0 fees for foreign exchange and the UBank card has $0 fees for ATM withdrawals overseas (although local ATM operators may charge their own fee).

28 Degrees uses the Mastercard Exchange Rate and UBank uses the Visa Exchange Rate with no extra fees on top.

UBank has a $2000 (AUD) daily withdrawal limit, which is up from the $1000 limit I've seen on competitors, and no monthly withdrawal limit like some cards do (Wise has a $7000 monthly limit).

So my plan is to use the credit card to pay for things like hotels, meals etc and then use the debit card for ATM withdrawals and as a backup other payments. This means I don't need to keep too much cash sitting on the debit card balance.

I've done a bunch of research and read lots of terms and conditions so hopefully this info can help someone avoid nasty fees and gotchas. The one thing to note is that the exchange rate is calculated when the payment is cleared each time you spend, so if you want to lock in an exchange rate you need to use a travel card which 'loads' foreign currency rather than a debit/credit card.

  • Oh great meeting postponed. Dinner time

Edit: OK false alarm. No dinner yet

    • It’s hump day. The week is almost over. Treat yourself with something small

      • It's the day before pay day. I shall have to abstain. I do have some very good leftover curry defrosting in the fridge from last evening, at least. And the finale of mad men s4.

      • These lines on the side are confusing me. I wasn't sure if you were talking to me lol. Maybe you aren't but hello.
