This guy didn’t just think the leopards wouldn’t eat his face. He thought, in a world of leopards and gazelles, that he is the strong ranger with a gun (and cool sunglasses. His name is Bachir after all). It didn’t even occur to him, not for a second, that any of this could touch him. He thought it could backfire on the dumb hicks, but he’s special. He knew fully well that the administration he voted for was made of despicable people. He’s not the “dumb” conservative who thinks they have values or principles. He knew and understood, explicitly, the oft-repeated concept that “conservatism” boils down to drawing laws around people A to put people B above said law. It’s not a secret to him. It’s what he believes in.
I’m still not sure I’m being clear.
Due to his background, I believe he absolutely knew that people were going to get fucked with arbitrarily. And he explicitly thought he was deeper into the ingroup than even the average member of the ingroup and that he was actually untouchable. There’s every chance he’s a bigger bigot than any klansman would even know how to be.

Austraia and the UK have similar laws to allow border police to search your electronic devices. In Australia they can clone your phone and keep a copy for as long as they want.

Honestly I have received the same treatment for decades on different occasions. Mostly when I had long hair, I was detained so many times for no reason. Sometimes handcuffed, often illegally searched. They profile the fuck out of everyone, it's been this way forever. I'm not saying it isn't getting worse.
My family is traveling to Toronto in a little while and we decided to plan a short travel day on our return trip in case the border takes too long. My longest US border detainment was 4 hrs. Me and three friends had spent a few days camping in British Columbia in college. They searched everything, interviewed us all separately. That one was 30 years ago but I've had more recent events too
If you think this stuff is new you haven't been paying attention. It's why I'm a constitutional rights advocate now. No matter what party is in power, the government needs limits.
