I just leave you with my favorite quote of Ljdawson, made during the reddit api war:
"I don't know. I don't track shit."
He has crashlytics. That's about it.
Tbh, I don't care for open or closed source, I don't even care for free or payed. (19 bucks per year.. That's like what, a coffee and a donut at a Starbuck?)
Stuff must just work and to be honest... All available clients all work sort of.
This one does this good but sucks at multi instances. That one screws up gifs from that and this site. Made an error typing your user name!/password during setup? Tough shit. You can't edit it so redo from start, remove it and type well this time.
Sync just seems to work.
That's not to shit on anyone hard work: I can't do it, I can't make them, I'm glad these clients exist. I don't expect free tools to be perfect.
But I'm also superglad Sync for lemmy is a thing. And I will pay for it when it's out of beta.
Sync not only works. It's the smoothest App I have on my phone. The animations and transitions are just beautiful, well timed and do not stutter even a tiny bit. I wish all android apps were like Sync. I'll gladly pay whatever he charges.
It appears if a reply is voted higher than it's parent comment then it will appear above it instead of under it. Quite annoying. Hopefully it gets worked out soon.
Sync has by far the highest customization which I love, and will happily pay the $20 for the ad-free version when the kinks are worked out. Although, Jerboa is a close second, and if they put in a default comment sorting option, I might just stick with it as it's FOSS.
Didn't I read the current version does not allow you to post? I feel its pretty weird to release an app in that state and still keep ads in it.
But if you are happy paying and using that, more power to you! Meanwhile I save that money and use one of the many open source clients that actually work.
Sync is fantastic, and I've used it for years. But I'll be sticking with Thunder. Its UI is close, and I'm able to contribute the things I want to change.
I wonder if it was because of the backlash from being subscription only? I was surprised by how many angry posts there were. I gotta admit even I was disappointed. I don't mind paying for a pro version. But a subscriptions a bit of an ask, as I don't need the features offered by it, but I do like sync and Lawrence is a good guy.
I say this as someone who is probably one of the biggest supporters of software-freedom around here, but bullying or shaming people for preferring non-free apps does nothing but incite resentment towards the movement. I value the four freedoms because I think I deserve control of my computing, not because I think it's my place to dictate what others should value.
The community is one of the worst aspects when working with/on opensource software.
There are so many people with Open Source rabies...
Combine that with all those people who don't understand the difference between software developed by people who donate their spare time to work on FOSS software and for-profit software developed by big corporations. As a FOSS dev you get so many entitled assholes who think downloading a free app gives them the right to threaten/abuse the devs.
And then there are the fanboys who attack everyone who talks about downsides of their favourite product.
All in all, the hostile community makes FOSS development very not fun.
This is what gets me. I look into software for my company. Someone put up a open source alternative. I expressed my concerns with a small open source project and they acted like i murdered his first born. Well past the point of unprofessional and into the HR realm.
I'm not against open source by any means but there is a place for everything. This just was not the place for this specific product with only a handful of devs and no support. If a system goes down we need to have someone we can call.
I voiced my opinion on one of the sync announcement posts and it was received quite controversially.
We all get stuck in our own camps and become quote tribal and I feel like all around it's difficult to not take what is being said as some kind of attack.
I don't get why instead of making posts about "Don't use Sync!" no one is saying "Feel free to use and pay for whatever you like! But as a friendly reminder please note that you should also consider helping your instance owners or the core Lemmy team as well."
There's nothing wrong at all with paying for software, and even some will be fine with ads. It has literally nothing to do with anyone else but that person. Let them do them.
Like I say though, I think the thing that should be being said is that the app is not self contained and that these people should seriously consider helping out the other aspects as well if they can. But hey, no, let's just belittle them and push them away instead of welcoming them. I can almost guarantee that the availability of Sync will bring more users to Lemmy that never would have been here otherwise.
I don't think the meme is bullying or shaming people using sync...right? He said he likes infinity better even though sync is awesome because its libre and open source
I don't understand the removed about it, we users were asking for this, it is the good thing about Lemmy/Fediverse, you have tons of options, and probably will have more, heck even the PWA are awesome, no need to download anything at all.
You have to accept to being tracked by Google, having an advertising id, all the data Firebase collects. Their ToS is large.
Users were asking for it, that's true. I guess users don't really care about being tracked, allowing google into their phone and indirectly supporting them controlling the web, thus enabling them to do things like manifest v3 or the web integrity API.
Ads? understandable, the dev has bills to pay. Not open source? Purists may hate it, but not the end of the world. Tracking? Google? No thanks, the beautiful design is not worth it.
Sync is a perfectly fine app for me. I tried all other apps and nowhere near to sync. I don't even have ads on the free version as I am using dns ad blocker. The moment one time payment for removing ads is out(it is coming), I will buy it. Or I will donate to dev in some other way as I am not a fan of subscriptions.
Yeah they are empty on my phone too, and I've never used any DNS-adblocking on my home network. I suspect it might be because whatever ad system Sync uses currently just doesn't have any ads for my country, but I don't actually know.
I've tried different reddit third party apps for months at a time, and I've got to say, Sync is probably the best app I have used in terms of designs and fluidity.
What client I use doesn't affect your experience. I and lots of others are reddit refugees and I used sync for years. I'm ecstatic to have the interface back.
Bullshit gatekeeping and bickering over ideological purity doesn't help anyone. At the end of the day, lemmy is confusing for someone accustomed to reddit. There is a learning curve. Most of us just want to exchange info and converse. I don't give a fuck to learn about FOSS and all that other bullshit any more than any of you want to learn the specialized minutiae I have to sift through at my day job.
Shut the fuck up already. This sort of discourse lands like a bunch of shitty kids meeting at a half empty bar all criticizing how one another got there
You are commenting on a meme that says the same thing you just did in a slightly different and more concise way, though. All I see in the comments is people saying why they prefer one app over another. I don't really see anybody bashing people for picking a a specific app.
I think you are overreacting a bit.
If you do see people being bullied for picking one app over another, then I apologize. I just mostly see people criticizing Sync for not being FOSS, or see people criticizing the FOSS stuff for not being user friendly. I don't really see a problem with people criticizing software, as long as it isn't an attack on the users of said software.
I do agree that there are too many damn posts about this, but I don't really care about it that much. Maybe others do.
5-6 different open source and ad free options, with no trackers whatsoever, and some of y'all are fawning over...you know what? To each their own. At least y'all are here and not on reddit 😁
Edit: I was wrong, there's around 20 options (including Sync) for Lemmy apps that are either already out or in development. Enjoy the buffet.
what's the point of judging? Sync is the only app so far that has full, thoughtful support for foldable phones and the dev genuinely has been putting in a lot of work into it. I bought the No Ads IAP and I'm perfectly happy with it, but there are so many good options now for those that want something completely free.
Because the open source community has been full of a bunch of people who built whole personalities on shitting on anything not FOSS. And even though they now have an opportunity to bring a lot more people into the community than before they'd rather play these stupid arrogant superiority games instead of just letting people enjoy things how they want to enjoy them.
I totally get the familiarity aspect, I think I just enjoy tinkering around and the feeling of learning how something new works. Either way, glad to have y'all here and not there 🙂
do you really have a hard time understanding how different people have different preferences and how familiarity works or do you just like being smug?
as for "trackers" and ads you will find that unless they are intrusive about 99% of the population doesn't give a fuck, even on a fairly niche site like lemmy the majority won't give a fuck.
I love FOSS but I got pretty used to the official reddit app, and Sync is the only app that feels like if the reddit app wasn't buggy and laggy. The paid aspect doesn't bother me because I would have donated to whatever app I use anyway, at $5/mo the $20 one time ad removal option makes sense if I use it for more than 4 months so it's worth it to me.
I just installed Sync after browsing with Jerboa for the past month. Sync has such a clean, smooth look that if it functions even remotely consistently it'll be my new replacement.
I'm soooo happy to be done with Jerboa... Haven't uninstalled it yet but it's such a buggy piece of crap compared to Sync so it's only a matter of time til I do.
I used sync for reddit for years, I had no ads in the free version and the pro version. I've tried a half dozen apps for Lemmy since my Reddexit. Sync for Lemmy is far and away the best. I really missed its design. I was happy to toss $20 to you for no ads on Sync for Lemmy. Thanks for all the hard work.
Anyone can choose to install whatever software they choose on their device, but the "free" in free software specifically refers to the freedom to read and modify the source code.
Under the philosophy of the FOSS movement, all proprietary software are by definition unethical.
Since Lemmy and the larger fediverse is the choice for many free software advocates, it's natural that you see this kind of backlash when fundamentally unethical software to interact with it is released.
Why can't I just use the service that has a design I like?
I wouldn't have used reddit if it wasn't for sync and that same logic applies to lemmy. Adoption is critical for lemmy to succeed so please tone it down a bit, unless having the same 2 dozen people in your community was your personal appealing feature of lemmy.
I have always preferred Infinity when I was using Reddit. But right now Infinity for Lemmy seems to be not in a usable state. I have been using Thunder For Lemmy as of recently, not sure if I will switch from it to Infinity for Lemmy once its in a more usable state.
Edit: I can't even use Sync for Lemmy as on the Play Store it says its unavailable on my device. I have a Samsung Galaxy s23 Ultra. One would think that it would be available considering its pretty much this years flagship of the largest Android brand.
Edit 2: It seems to not be because of the device itself @IncogCyberspaceUser@lemmy.world seems to have been able to download it on their s23 Ultra.
Edit 3: It was because of Age Verification. I can now download it fine.
Hmm. Then I am not sure. @A10@kerala.party seems to also be facing the same problems as me. I don't think its a locality issue as I am in the US, unless for whatever reason that is the issue.
was using Thunder the past couple of weeks, because I couldn"t get warm with Jerboa, but once I saw Infinity comming out, I immediately downloaded it and haven't had problems since
I like how the Fediverse doesn't pull that bullshit. I've been on the internet since the days of dialup and the "appification" of websites is such obvious garbage. Like sure, I want to run a program coded by McDonalds on my pocket computer, that sounds legit.
So fucking ecstatic to have seen that Sync for Lemmy came out today personally.
Paid for Ultra immediately without a second thought even if the app is early days I know it's a worthwhile investment to keep ljdawson paid and caffeinated lol
Speak for yourself, but Infinity really isn't as well made as Sync. I'd rather pay one time for a quality experience and support the developer. Also, no ads in the paid version.
I've been jumping around trying 4-5 clients since the Reddit Exodus and all of them had some really anything bug.
Voyager is the one that in my opinion is the best one feature and stability wise.
However, voyager if giving me one big headache in the form of going totally black if I swap over to fx read an email. I don't care if you're my Firefox needing things up. I'm not going to opt in even more in Google Surveillance just because Voyager is open source.
Sync for Reddit was my whole Reddit experience for the last 7-8 years. I think I tried a majority of the clients and Sync totally wiped the floor with the other clients in my opinion. Both in new features and stability.
I use Windows and several dists on a daily basis. I have an Android phone and I truly like the philosophy behind open source... With that said.... Competition is great. We'll see what Sync for Lemmy can bring to the table.
If it is as good as sync for Reddit was the other clients have to shape up and it's us, the users, that will benefit.
I bought Sync Pro for Reddit, and I'll do the same for Lemmy. Open-source can suck a butt, I'm willing to pay for a well made app
Edit: lmao the replies! To be clear, I am not talking shit on open source software, the "open source can go suck a butt" comment was in reference to taking the time to get used to a new app when I don't have to 😝 Go touch grass. Sync treated me well, I'm willing to pay the creator to have that same experience on Lemmy. That's it. Stop being defensive, go for a walk.
They then edited and said they're not taking a shit on open source software, in direct contradiction to what they said before. It shouldn't be a surprise that people didn't like it. Also, "touch grass" is a really stupid phrase since most people browse the internet on their phones and can just as easily be outside sitting in grass as anywhere else.
People that diss open source are dumbass dipshits. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Open source software runs most of the Internet and this social media platform. It has provide more value to every one of us than any closed source retail software ever could.
I'm sorry to say, but you seem to be clueless in the world of software engineering. Open vs closed source does not make any software better or worse. This solely depends on the talent and will of the developers to create a good app for you. That can happen in both worlds, but just because an app is not open source doesn't make it better in any ways. Rethink it.
Sync might be a nice client, but you're dependent on this one dev to always deliver a good experience and keep updating, whereas if it was open source, you could be sure someone would continue the work and help fix some issues if anything was to happen.
Open source has a lot of potential. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking it's worse in any way. It's not.
Tried Sync today, it's fancy in terms of design and customization; I can see the appeal. But I think I'll stick with Connect because it's straight forward and easy to use out of the box.
I think for me, I've used sync for reddit since like '15. So coming to lemmy with sync... Its like coming home. I've tried connect and liftoff though, and like both.
After using Sync for so long and having it set up just so other apps feel janky, through no fault of their own. I have it set up very information dense with amoled dark theme and colorful comment indents. I could kind of look over theme issues, but the interaction just felt off.
Connect was what I was using, though, and I preferred it over wefwef/Voyager which had a less wasteful feeling UI to me.
I'm sure it is, but until the live version has single payment, I won't consider the switch. Even then, I don't use Lemmy half as much as I used Reddit, so I won't pay the same amount I paid for Reddit.
Yeah, tried sync since that was my reddit app of choice but the ads and tracking just forced me to uninstall it. Trying thunder now and it seems pretty good
Infinity won't let me log in. So far I'm really liking Sync. And I'm completely fine with a subscription at it's current price. I'm happy to support devs. 8 don't like working for free. Not sure why they should have to. And so it's either ads or subscriptions. Pick your poison.
One time payments would be great, but the devs make a lot more from subscriptions. You don't see services like Netflix or Hulu offering one time payments options. As a consumer, I love it, but the devs might not be able to sustain the app from that model. I'd be interested if you have any other ideas though.
I am liking most apps in some way. I keep switching between many. And also each of the apps are in active development.
Currenly using: Summit, Thunder, Liftoff, Sync, Voyager.
I guess Voyager is also planning for a native app for both Android and iOS
I'm using Connect, Sync and Infinity. Sync is the most polished but Connect is very close. Connect let's you post as well as reply whereas Sync and Infinity only let you reply.
you know, you can block ads on Android. add as many trackers as you want, NextDNS will just sinkhole them 🤷♂️ it works just like PiHole. Adguard is good too. no need for any subscription.
How? I've been using sync for Reddit for so long I never tried some of the other ones like body or infinity. I actually had no idea it was open source either
Thank you! Just installed the APK. I was a sync pro user but the way the dev is handling Lemmy is disappointing with the ads, tracking and subscription only.
I've tried all the clients that I could get my hands on and Voyager (vger.app) is what I've settled on. Awesome UI, lightweight web app, frequent updates.
