The issue is parasitic HOAs that don't allow it.
For calling themselves "land of the free" there is surprisingly little freedom, unless you are rich of course. At that point you can rape kids and get away with murder.
As an American. The cause is racism.
No, really. HOA's were originally created to keep black people out of white neighborhoods after government-backed segregation was made illegal.
As long as you don't let your grass grow too much
Officially it was a suicide. Or at least according to the Don(ald).
HOA's don't allow watching Friends? I thought HOAs were bad.
I stopped raking years ago, and have started seeing fireflies again.
My neighbours hate it, but honestly, I’ve never understood raking in the first place. It’s autumn, and leaves are natural. What’s with the obsession to make lawns look like artificial carpeted spaces?
The leaves look nice imo. Better than a scalped layer of dying grass.
Landlords Inc.
Everyone with an HOA chooses to have it.
Edit: Downvote objective truth whenever it's something you don't want to hear or accept.
I recently got into FRIENDS purely cuz it's cozy. But it's hard to reference it without looking a little behind.
"OHHHH ROSS AND RACHEL I GET IT NOW!!!"
I loved Friends growing up.
But it was of a different era and now many of their jokes make me uncomfortable.
OHHHH ROSS AND RACHEL I GET IT NOW!!!"
My older brother watched Friends every single night, rerun after rerun. Ross and Rachel are the reason I immediately dislike any "will they / won't they" plots when watching a new show.
I just feel bad about all that sleep you're gonna miss wishing you were with me!
Oh, no, no, no, don't you worry about me "falling asleep." I STILL HAVE YOUR LETTER!
There was some good writing in that show.
I rewatched it couple of years ago and I think it's still funny and not that dated. The only thing I didn't like was the laugh track.
Ok but please clean your sidewalks, people. Don't use the environment as an excuse to be a bad neighbor. We still need to use the sidewalks.
It is strange to me, that sidewalks aren’t public property and are managed (and cleaned) like the streets in other countries 😄
They are public property and designed and built by the municipalities in many places. The cities and towns just prefer to offload the cleaning part to who every lives in front of a section of sidewalk.
Let's call it "Civic Duty" and your chance to do something nice and beneficial for your neighborhood.
In Brazil the property owner is responsible for everything up to the edge of the road in a lot of places, including building and maintaining sidewalks....they go to shit and nobody fixes them lol
ASSuming you still have one left...
I have crashed my escooter on slippery wet leaves. They were too slippery to steer.
Now I ride my bike instead I haven't had that problem as the roads are swept
Probably depending on the country and according legislature, but as a pedestrian, I often wish for more scooters to take to the road as well. In most aspects they are very equivalent to bicycles and just as fast and dangerous. Worst of all are those scooter drivers who switch between road and sidewalk with every traffic light.
Edit: I accept I am wrong here. His style looks like AI slop to me. I see his responses in the screenshots. I'm wrong. I'll keep my statement about slop as-is, though, since it's true.
HELLO THERE!
DID YOU KNOW USING AI SLOP AS A CARTOON IS HARMING THE ENVIRONMENT?
Brian Ahearn may make poignant cartoons, but his use of generative AI to illustrate them is sad.
Does he though??
I looked into it and found this from not even all that long ago.
I'm all for calling slop out, but we gotta be sure. It does kinda have that style but I don't see other signs.
Edit: He's posted his art on Instagram since at least 2020, well before AI image models could put out anything nearly passable.
Its already a thing where random internet users will scream "AI slop" at indie game developers and many of them spend more time arguing that it's not, showing evidence and still losing sales because of it.
The wolf spider art is familiar to me. It also is distinctly different from the salamander art to my eyes. I get it, my mistake. I have edited my comment.
I don't get the joke with the beaver.
I, too, lie about not using AI to make money.
How do you know it's AI?
That doesn´t look at all like AI slop
The line weight and huge, perfectly centered round eyes all are hallmarks of AI slop. I accept that I'm wrong about him specifically, but this style looks like like AI to me.
Yeah as someone pointed out to me in another post. AI slop stole from artists like these hence why it looks similar and some of us have this initial negative reaction. Farking waste of air those thieving tech bros!
I knew it was harming the environment.
What's up with h all the hate for Friends these days? It's a simple feel good comedy that got laughs, why hate on that?
I loved friends, still do
Because it wasnt simple, and its got a lot of old culture in it that doesnt always hit the same way as it did then.
Its a product of its time, and making fun of it is sort of like making fun of older generations for whatever reason.
I will say I dont like how apparently women needed to be under 100 pounds to be considered attractive back then, and it bums me out knowing that Chandler's actor was struggling with addiction during a chunk of the show.
It does have some really well written bits though, but its usually not the ones people bring up most often.
It's a comfort show that's still popular. But for some people they just don't get it. Kinda like how the office is a comfort show. Why do people still watch them? Not sure, I don't get the appeal. But it's pretty common to have a comfort show and that's probably fine.
I'll watch Friends over the Office personally. This is despite the fact that I think the Office is more creative in some ways. Reason is all the cringe, particularly around Michael. So I'll watch things like the Jim pranking Dwight compilation on YouTube, but I won't watch the show again. But Friends is completely OK background noise. You don't have to pay attention to it. You'll just notice the funny bits sometimes while you're doing other things. You won't be like "shit I missed the last episode, now I have to go back" because it doesn't matter what happened usually.
I mean, as someone who grew up watching and loving friends, it's extremely problematic.
I've come to realize over the years that most TV is problematic, but you can still be consciously aware of it and still enjoy what you like within that context. I think it's worse if you watch it, but have no idea that it's problematic. My dad watches big bang theory sometimes, and that show is incredibly misogynistic for laughs. He has no idea, he thinks the humor is normal. He just takes a lot of that stuff in completely unexamined. My point being, if you are consciously aware of something being problematic, it makes your consumption of it more responsible.
Big mood. Only old sitcom besides Seinfeld that can still make me snort-laugh at times.
I honestly don't get all the love for the show. It was the stereotypical sitcom that was super generic and not all that funny. I was always completely bored by it.
And the salamander didn't say anything bad about it. It said there's better shows. Are you going to try and claim that Friends is better than Breaking Bad or the first 8 seasons of Game of Thrones?
I like that when you mention better shows you choose 2 shows that are not at all light hearted, funny or comparable to Friends in any manner.
Why watch friends when you can watch 2 shows that have many fucked up things happen in them
Game of Thrones only had 4 seasons though. Shame they never finished it.
First 5?
I don't like it, but it's plenty well written, it's obvious why people like it. I think people just like to hate on things they don't like, it can be fun to be negative with no substantial harm, like complaining for fun.
I never watched it, but it always looked bad.
How do you think it compares to Fresh Prince or George Lopez?
It is cringe 😄
Simple feel good comedy is just a distraction from reality. Even worse, with their semi fantasy “this is how real world is” style, they are actually hurting society making people think they are living in this fantasy society.
Go for Silo, severance and Invasion. Those shows offer way more reality based society even while being full-on fantasy.
Reavers
Don't shame them for their guilty pleasure, lizard creature!
AMPHIBIAN
Hard N.
Better shows to watch:
Buffy
The Wire
MST3K
Survivor up to season 16
The New Girl
GOT (stop mid season 4)
Broad City
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.
GOT (stop mid season 4)
Yeah to bad they never finished it
"Legend has it, they're still fighting to this day!"
I still think GoT is worth watching until the end of S6, the battle of the bastards is a fantastic episode and seeing Sansa's arc play out was pretty satisfying. Then it went to absolute shit.
Survivor was never good tbh
Personal preference
Does the Wheadon sex pest stuff ruin Buffy?
I haven't seen it but was a Firefly fan, and some of the things in that show now make me cringe.
Not really, but it's a nostalgia watch for me. It wasn't an issue when I watched it the first time, and it's more about what the cast was doing. Wheadon didn't even write or direct every episode, so it's hard to really say he ruined every moment of work from maybe a hundred or so people.
If you can seperate the author from the work, then yeah. There's nothing I can remember from a recent rewatch that's like tastelessly pervy in it. It does handle some mature themes, there's some episodes that deal with like SA and stuff like that, but it was handled with levity.
That said, you'll probably still cringe a bit because there's parts of it that are so blatantly late 90s/early 2000s that they're just funny to think about now. stuff like the "internet ghost" is incredibly dated.
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.
Hell yes. Is there a decent quality version somewhere? I have some potato quality divx on a spool somewhere.
Sailing the warm ports can reward you with a dvd rip. PM me for details.
The Good Place
BoJack Horseman
Babylon 5
Depends on the zone.
In Texas where I lived... you get snakes. BIG snakes. And fun things like ninja bug swarms, wasp colonies, black widows, and such.
There aren't a lot of wet leaves in Florida with so many palms or evergreens, but if you do leave them, you get disease and parisites, especially if its up against your house. Like, all the native plants in your yard will start dying. And it's definitely not safe to step in.
And fireflies and butterflies. You take the good with the bad.
Also, when you want to remove them (partially or in spring), just mow them and leave the mulch. Easiest cleanup, good for the plants and wildlife
Aside from the wildlife that was hiding in the leaves you just ran though a gasoline powered blender that is.
*battery powered blender...
But yeah, you're right. Goes without saying that one should try to evict as many leaf-tenants as possible beforehand.
Would be nice if there was some timeframe where this is safe for most wildlife
Good.
They should stay off my grass.
Does this kill the bug?
Like, for real..what are the chances of the bug getting hit by the blade, in the first place? Its one fast blade vs one real small bug. Possibly one with the gift of flight.
Then it's in a bag full of grass. And aren't most bugs passive breathers? So wouldn't all the air rushing through the vacuum into the bag just like, idk, give them superpowers or something?
I tried this for the first time this year. I was surprised how clean it looked afterwards, the leaf mulch mostly disappears into the grass.
I read about mulch once.
LEZERD!!
I mowed and bagged all the leaves in my backyard and put them in my chickens run. They loved it...
The leaves in the front yard got blown to the "woods" between my neighbor and I.
After I mowed up most the leaves in the back, I did another pass with a lower deck setting to get most the pine needles/cones...those went in the woods (the girls don't like too many needles)...then blew what needles/cones/dog poop remained into a pile, mowed that up (dumped in woods).
Whatever was left got blown under the deck.
Did I do good?
just leave them in place (within reason). your chickens probably loved the leaves because a lot of native bugs use dead leaves to lay their eggs; both mowing the leaves and giving them to the chickens probably killed a lottttt of bugs. and it removes important nutrients from your homes immediate surrounding ecosystem. you'll save butterflies and fireflies!

And Im going outside to rake up my leaves. And my neighbours leaves. Fuck that... gecko? No one shits on Friends, you little shit! NO ONE!!!!!! lol
No one needs to shit on Friends, it's already shit.
Remove the laugh track, and Ross is a full blown narcissistic sociopath… The only person he seems to genuinely care about is his son, Ben… But even Ben seems to vanish in the later seasons. There are fan theories that Ross completely abandoned Ben (or that Carol and Susan took full custody because Ross was always such a prick) after Emma was born.
Phoebe is a manipulative removed who uses quirkiness as an excuse to toy with people.
Rachel is a spoiled disorganized mess, whose need for attention compelled her to constantly keep Ross on a leash without letting him get too close. She broke up with a dude, got her feelings hurt when he had a rebound, then constantly held it over his head after they got back together. When he got tired of it and found someone else, she crashed their wedding in the hopes that he would leave his fiancée at the altar.
Chandler regularly uses sarcasm to poke at his friends’ insecurities and belittle them, and masks all of his insecurities with self-deprecating humor instead of actually working to better himself.
Monica’s obsessive need for control regularly leads her to manipulate or bully others, and consistently overshadows her empathy.
Joey was too good for the rest of the characters. His only real emotional flaw was that he never really had any deep romantic connections. But that was largely because he was more into the hookup culture, and he reserved his attempts at deeper romance for the few partners he really got along with. He never tried to hide the fact that he was a playboy, even around the women he was sleeping with. He was an idiot, but he at least cared for and about the other main characters, in a way that none of them ever seemed to reciprocate.
Also, the show was ultimately about six rich white people, who occasionally cosplayed as relatable lower middle class folk. In a city as diverse as NYC, you would have to work to find a city block so completely deprived of melanin. The series was 10 seasons long, and black people only had speaking roles in like 25 episodes… And a lot of those were because Ross and Joey dated the same black woman for like 10 episodes in the last season. They also very clearly lived in a nice part of the city, (some have estimated that Monica’s apartment would run for ~$3-4M when the show was airing) and their financial struggles were only ever superficial to make them more relatable.
Remove the laugh track, and Ross is a full blown narcissistic sociopath…
Yeah, we all saw that video, mate. It only makes him look like that, because hes pausing for the audience laughter. Its a sitcom... I dont really know what you expect. You take away the LIVE STUDIO AUDIENCE and everyone looks like a nutjob.
But even Ben seems to vanish in the later seasons.
You can blame the Sprouse brothers getting more work for that, I would assume. Theres strict laws around how many hours a kid can work, and those kids were starting to gain popularity doing a couple of movies a year. Getting the schedules to line up was probably the main reason. But yeah, it was odd to see not see him show up again. But he was mentioned, most notably in jokes about his absence. Like when Jack says Emma is his first grandchild.
Phoebe is a manipulative removed who uses quirkiness as an excuse to toy with people.
Rachel is a spoiled disorganized mess
Yes, that was the start of her character arc... You have seen character arcs before, right? You start off at one place. Have a few experiences, make some good and bad choices, learn from those experiences and then ultimately grow into a new version of the character? Does having flaws make a character bad? Some would say that flawed characters are the best characters. For example, Kim Wexler is a deeply flawed character, and one of the best of recent memory.
Chandler regularly uses sarcasm to poke at his friends’ insecurities and belittle them, and masks all of his insecurities with self-deprecating humor instead of actually working to better himself.
Same answer as Rachel.
Monica’s obsessive need for control regularly leads her to manipulate or bully others, and consistently overshadows her empathy.
See Rachel again.
Joey was too good for the rest of the characters. His only real emotional flaw was that he never really had any deep romantic connections.
Did you even watch the show?
Also, the show was ultimately about six rich white people, who occasionally cosplayed as relatable lower middle class folk. In a city as diverse as NYC, you would have to work to find a city block so completely deprived of melanin
So, white people cant be friends with only white people? Thats kinda racist, isnt it? Its not like there wasnt any other black people on the show. In the first season monica works with and is friends with a black woman. She just isnt part of the main cast. Do you have the same complaints about Living Single? Or the Fresh Prince? Or any of the other completely black casts of 90s sitcoms? Ill be you dont, cos Reddit never told you to...
They also very clearly lived in a nice part of the city, (some have estimated that Monica’s apartment would run for ~$3-4M when the show was airing) and their financial struggles were only ever superficial to make them more relatable.
So, Im guessing you just got all of this from Reddit? Cos theres loads of reasons not to like friends, and you havent hit any of them. What you have done is hit every single popular thing to say on reddit. Including reddits uncanny ability to miss the mark on all of them. The answer to the apartment was "rent control" and "subletting the apartment from Monicas grandmother". Things that were brought up in the show REGULARLY. If you really wanted to challenge the cost of living, you would have picked Joey. As he was an out of work actor in a non rent controlled apartment. But even that was addressed by the fact that Chandler basically paid for everything and Joey owed him a fuck load of money. But Joey is the easy one to go after in this complaint, not Monica and Rachel. But reddit users are dumb as fuck, so there you have it.
Honestly, its the racism in your post thats so very disturbing. That white people MUST have a token black friend, or they are considered racist.
In a city as diverse as NYC, you would have to work to find a city block so completely deprived of melanin.
Greenwich Village(where friends is set) is part of Community District 2. And in the 90s CD2 had a population of 94,105. Of that, 2,941 (3.1 %) were non‑Hispanic Black/African American. So... no. It wasnt that diverse. Not where Friends was set. You need to go back to Reddit, bro beans. Youre stinking up the place with incorrect nonsense. Have a great day!
Fuxk no. This robs soil and nutrients from the soil and its ecosystem.
Im a master gardener and I mulch my leaves then leave them on my turf grass.
You mean like complaining on the Internet about a throwaway joke in a webcomic?
The Friends dig was just a utilitarian punchline for the comic to add some comedy to the informative nature of the first panel. I dunno why people take things to heart so much when there really are so, so many better shows than Friends. The comic doesn't even say that Friends is bad, just that there's better. Show viewing options have expanded and improved a lot since 1994.
Sure, if by "wild life" you mean insects and rodents that you probably don't want in your yard. Also, your grass will be dead if you have a good amount of trees.
Hedgehogs love leaves. And fuck yes do I want some rodents in my yard. I love bunnies. Why would I not want cool ass beetles? And I'm sure the little lizard wouldn't mind as well.
Fuck the monoculture you call grass. I have a local wildflower yard.
Akshually rabbits aren't rodents...
Of course I entirely agree with your post and am just being anal
You're making a whole lot of assumptions about me here, which I'll ignore.
Here are some reasons why I think this is a bad idea for many people. My good friend and neighbor just has rodents (mice in this case) do $7000 in damage to his car by chewing holes in his wiring harness. Also depending on your climate, said leaves are wonderful homes for cockroaches to breed, which I assume you don't want unless you are insane. This was a major issue in Florida if I didn't immediately rake of the vast bed of oak leaves. I have no problem with "good" rodents. Rabbits, squirrels, chipmonks, headehogs (are these even in the US? I've never see one of these anywhere I've live), etc. It's is the mice and rats that can and will ruin your stuff and can majorly screw up your life. Good luck with your leaves.
Some people don't mind sharing the land they have with them. Especially as the land available to wildlife decreases year on year.
Personally I'll take insects and native rodents over sterile trimmed grass any day, especially for the front yard which doesn't even get used aside from a 'keeping up with the Joneses' style lawn and garden manicure unspoken competition.
You can refer to my comment to a different reply for more details, but this has nothing to do with "keeping up with the Joneses", it has everything to do with keeping away mice, rate, cockroaches, and the like away from my vehicle and home.
Where I live all the grass in peoples yards are not native and would absolutely die without constant upkeep by humans. I really don't understand the point. I get that it looks neat and upholds the aesthetic of luxury yards, but I've never thought natural foilage was ugly and never understood why it was unwanted by people. The picture perfect at grass lawns are very uninviting for people to actually walk around on. At that point it's basically the equivalent of putting plastic on all your furniture and telling guests not to sit on it
Those lawns could be clover, and they would look even nicer, require less upkeep, and be better for the environment and wildlife.
Yeaaaa, validate me for not taking leaves
Screw blackberries tho
Excuse me? What do you have against delicious blackberries?
The plants are nigh impossible to control or remove. They're like mint; only plant it in the ground if you hate yourself and your neighbors :)
They're a highly invasive species here in Washington state. Brought by settlers. They've displaced the native species and are nearly impossible to get rid of.
Himelayan blackberries are invasive
Certain blackberries are deeply irritating invasive species. Delicious, but an outright menace that can destroy local forests. Methods to control them are extensive and extreme. Never eat road side blackberries in the US, certain states use herbicide to stem the tide. Bushes next to highways are more likely to be sprayed. Low pedestrian traffic and cheaper maintenance than cutting them back.
... You ever tried clearing a yard or whole garden overgrown by wild blackberries for years?
God, they're delicious, but they are EVERYWHERE, regrow as soon as you turn around, and you either are very slow and careful or get hurt a lot. Nasty little suckers, those thorns.
I'd guess OP has the same trauma as me
Look past their juicy and delicious flesh comrade! invasive species are the scourge of many a backyard garden
Blackberries are "ok".
