  • I don't understand the logic. Why would Proton make Linux dependent on Windows binaries? It does not make Linux dependent, but enables to use them. I don't see any reason why Valve should demand devs to build Linux builds (plus Valve should not demand it, it should be a decision of the developers, Valve should not have that much power in my opinion).

if microsoft changed their apis wouldnt new games just not work on proton?

The same would happen with changes in Linux. And arguably it is worse on Linux. Windows binaries have a higher chance of working through WINE or Proton, than Linux binaries in the future. Plus developers only need one binary build, instead developing for Linux and Windows. Also if Microsoft changes their API, then only games affected using the new API would be affected. And changes and additions happen all the time and the Proton / WINE devs are working all the time too.

  • To an extent, but 10 skilled diverse people will result in higher quality than 10 skilled same people.

I don't believe that. If someone gets a job, because it has blonde hair or is woman, while someone else might fit better for the job and is doing better... then clearly something is wrong.

  • Wait you never heard of this game? Its one of the most hyped games in last weeks. People didn't even believe it would be real, as it sounded and looked too good to be true. After some hands on from trusted sources, we can look forward to this game.

  • Hopefully it will not stay too long. I assume a year. Does anyone have a list or clue how long Denuvo is usually active in games? I often read how it got removed after some time.

  • I personally don't care what gender or skin color someone has. We don't need more Woman (or any other gender). This should not be a topic of discussion in my opinion, only skill should be.

  • I think lots of people have a problem or could get a problem with that, and don't realize it. I mean it is similar to the shitty microtransactions situation on smartphone games. I say similar in the sense, that most people don't have a problem with it, compared to the population and how many have a problem. This should not be an excuse for exploitation of the weak ones.

But besides that, I don't even think its a problem with a few only. Even the potential of getting addicted is bad. There are reasons why children (i mean under 18) are not allowed in casinos. Are these games and the gambling with CS:GO and Team Fortress 2 for 18+ only? Whatever it is, we all know younger people play these games too. If not the microphone is a good indication... but I digress here. I hope the market place in Steam will go away. There is no good reason for, other than Valve making money. There is not benefit for humanity or the people.

BTW the situation with my bro was not that too bad, just saying. It was a slight problem, but one that showed me first hand (or is it second hand?). I am also glad you made it through your difficult times.

  • Small note on the download speed of Internet Archive. I think they throttle downloads outside from the US. A VPN might help (it made a huge difference for me in the past), but no guarantees.

  • I just briefly mentioned EA for having lootboxes. It could have been any other company. My point is, if any other company did what Valve did, I would hate that too. Also that the items in Steam / Valve games are transferable doesn't matter, because it is still lootbox, a chance and gamble to get something and to get addicted. In fact, being able to transfer and sell or trade makes this even worse than static micro transactions to me. It is the same problem with collectable sports or Pokemon cards (which is in my opinion worse, because kids can buy them and get addicted...).

To make that clear: To me the trade market of Valve is a huge problem. This should not be a thing with videogames. Not even EA does that, or any other company for that matter (I am not focused on EA, it was just an example).

My bro in example got addicted to CS:GO skins and wasted lot of money. Because he could get the one expensive item and could sell it for lots of money. And that is not okay!

  • Yes, and I ask why he does not like and use it. What's the issue with it? Would be good to know for myself. Plus, if we know whats the issue with the official software, we can make better recommendations.

  • Nobody can safe us from C++.

  • As much as I like Valve, I really hate their virtual items trade market and the lootboxes in some of their games. I hate if EA does that, so I hate if Valve does that. And comparing them to real cards falls flat, because virtual cards are not real cards. Valve does not want give up the trade market, because they get money for doing nothing with each transaction.

This topic is the biggest flaw and problem I have with Valve, otherwise I am a Valve lover and fanboy.

  • How much is this vibe coded or is the Ai tool Claude just used to assist with code completion and helping in a few topics? Their acknowledgment is as follows and not very clear:

Acknowledgement: AI (mostly Claude) was used in the development of this software. That being said I always test before releasing code.

It is written in Python for Linux and Power Shell for Windows, with almost 3k lines each. I would feel much safe if it used a strongly typed and strict language as Rust, as it would be able to catch some basic errors more easily by design. Which is crucial in context of wiping data, downloading ISOs and installing an operating system. I couldn't trust this project at the moment. But at least it is open source, so that anyone can look into it.

  • While I am a Valve fanboy, I still have to agree that Valve is not innocent. There are stuff I hate about Valve doing. But its not about abusing monopoly position (I even argue its not real monopoly position, but that's not my main point). So yes, Valve is not innocent, but "leave Valve alone" in the context of accusing them to abuse their monopoly position.

  • Even Valve gets sued, while being on an open platform and having real competition unlike the single stores on consoles. Next sue Nintendo for having monopoly on handhelds, in the same vein as Sony on consoles and Valve on PC platform.

  • This is what I would think instinctively too, but still asked as I did not know if my instincts are correct. It's like starting and stopping the car engine on every traffic light...

  • Why?

  • The poor indie company needs some fundraising. :-(
