ELI5: If vampires don't eat garlic, how do they survive winter?
  • don't know about other countries, but in US and Japan, garlic is not traditionally mentioned as a winter/immunity support food.

a more likely recommendation is oranges or citrus in general, for vitamin C.

either way, humans usually survive common colds and regular influenza (in rich countries at least), so why wouldn't vampires survive it?

  • Emergency disable biometric on Android?
  • afaik "lockdown mode" shortcut is a basic feature in android. it quickly disables fingerprint/face/etc unlock, temporarily.

it should still be present in some form in most versions of android since several years ago.

if you can't find it in your power button long press menu, check the Lineage documentation.

btw powering off the device should also force password/pin unlock on the next boot.

  • Will using non-gmail hurt my chance of getting hired?
  • seems like companies who know what proton is, would have no problem with it. some of their people would use it themselves.

companies who never heard of it wouldn't have any bad impression about it.

if they never heard about it but are wary/scared of everything they never heard of, might not be safe to work there. that's the kind of place that would test their workers' loyalty randomly, and not reciprocate any loyalty they receive.

  • Why don't states in the US come up with their own health insurance program? So people can pay into it prolly less then what they pay now and the state put the money in a bank and use the interest for
  • it can happen. especially in California, because they have the population size to motivate health providers and pharma companies to negotiate.

it's not likely in the short term with the way the system is. and the problem which prevents it is not the economics nor legislative lack of will.

it's the insurance companies' lobbying and political campaign contributions. many many California legislators' campaigns are funded by insurance companies. and historically there has been a lot of corruption in the state's insurance regulator agency.

also the state's population , for some reason, are easily swayed by political ads in certain issues. like the car-share/delivery gig drivers proposition. i think they flip flopped in successive referendums. apologies if in wrong in that.

  • Looking for a girl to date, is this age gap alright?
  • the law is not banning all sex for <18. Notice how its <18 AND age difference.

same age pair , no matter how young, would not face any criminal charges. (one set of parents might file a lawsuit against the other parents, but that could happen at any age)

  • Other meaning for USA people
  • I'm USAian. (just identifying for this thread, i don't call myself that)

would "gringo" include Black USAians? Asian USAians? Spain-born USAians?

from my understanding of "gringo", that doesn't seem to include non-white USAians. Most English monolingual USAians think that means "white guy".

a lot of gen z USAians might not know the word Yankee as a term for USAians. if speaking to them, you might have to explain it's not the baseball team.

maybe it's better to stick with "USAians". it's never been used but it's easy to figure out. other possible choices are:

    • Statesians
    • USAliens
    • USAmericans
    • Staters
    • Stater Tots (re: tater tots)
    • USticles

better yet, call each of us by the state we're each from. that's the safest bet. you know all our 50 state names right? and their official demonyms? 🤣 kidding

  • Please, don't!
  • actually the admin of dbzero seems to be part of a project creating free open-source and crowdsourced distributed gen a.i. models and applications. im not to familiar with the details but links are in their profile on mastodon.

Gboard safe to use with network permission revoked?

for English i use heliboard. but i type in other languages also, and there are no practical choices in foss keyboards for those specific languages which also have the mainstream IME/key layout for my language (not qwerty).

fcitx provides some hope for the future but for now, it also doesn't have the IME/key layout for my language (only has qwerty). hopefully it can also have handwriting in the future somehow (if only via user-installed model/blob similar to heliboard glide typing).

anyway, I'm on Graphene OS. so i wondered if revoking network permission and setting gboard permanently to incognito (is permanent possible?) would suffice to cut off data collection?

edit: FYI the languages/key layouts i need are Japanese via 12-key flick and Cantonese via traditional Chinese handwriting input

I created an instance for a specific community
  • considering this and @Die4Ever@programming.dev's comment, could it incentivize certain types of prospective Admins to create community only instances, increasing attraction of more users to lemmy overall but disproportionally burden the user management workload on the traditional user+community instances?

  • Infinity Nikki studio Papergames generates almost $1 billion in 2024

  • correction: Briar chat desktop client "expired". No update timeline yet. (was: Briar chat desktop client "expired". Still an active project?)

Sorry if this is not an acceptable topic. I will move/delete it if needed.

Just wondering if anyone knows the status of Briar desktop. I was using it to communicate between my devices when internet (WAN) is down, but the desktop client, both windows and linux, displayed an expiration warning for the past few months. I was trying to be patient and wait for a new version, or at least a "renewed" version, but the expiration date has passed and I've had to move to a different messenger.

I read an issue on the git page mentioning the reason for incorporating an expiration date. But I could not find mention on the internet of a timeline or even whether or not the desktop app would be continuing after expiration.

edit: Just saw their recent mastodon posts

Bad UX is keeping the majority of people away from Lemmy
  • So my understanding from reading this (and other threads on Lemmy) is that:

-A majority of Lemmy users would rather the userbase remained small (in comparison to corporate social media and even compared to Mastodon).

-And a small but vocal minority wants to grow Lemmy to the point of being at least one of the choices, if not the de facto preferred alternative, on the mind of most Redditors who are sick of Reddit.

    Is that accurate?
