  • Westerners understand extreme basics, which does distort the bigger picture. It's really easy to understand a war for oil, it's a little more complicated to understand war as an economic engine for the military-industrial complex, but you'll start losing them when it gets more complicated: domino theory and Monroe doctrine and underdevelopment and imperialism etc etc.

  • I'm 60/40 thinking Trump is going to win here, because there's no one to actually oppose him. In other cases where he's tied up in court it's because there's political opposition. Who opposes this? A few progressives? It's almost a bipartisan consensus.

  • They can also fast-track cases from the lower courts to accelerate them to the Supreme Court, and have done so. Another trick they have is to make an interim ruling without issuing a majority opinion through the so-called "shadow docket". Then they can have the whole trial while the circus in the lower courts plays itself out. He could be in prison for years before they rule it unconstitutional.

    Assuming Trump doesn't push for public execution.

  • The lower courts can meaningfully delay Trump, but that lasts until it reaches the Supreme Court. The rigged 6-3 fascist Court almost always either rules in his favor, or delays an official ruling to let him get away with whatever he's doing.

  • Trump has shown a tendency to just ignore procedure and just do whatever he wants. The only reason he wouldn't be able to do that is if he was opposed, but who is going to oppose it? There's a few Democrats, but not even a majority of the electeds. I doubt there's a single Republican that'd oppose. Would the Supreme Court stop him?

    I think he can make this as big and stupid as he wants, and unless the masses protest against it he'll get away with it.

  • Oh wow, he snuck that one in right as he was leaving office, probably knowing people (like me) would see that the first bounty was issued the second week of January and just assume Trump was already president.

    But, yeah, they've been angling for regime change in Venezuela since 2002. I thought they'd just assassinate him, though.

  • Unlike Vietnam, there are millions of people in the US that are either from or that have close family in Latin America. That's why they spent the last year trying to deport and terrorize migrants, why they want to go after naturalized citizens, why they talk about going after "home growns" after they've finished rounding up the migrants, etc etc. It's all laying the groundwork for this next stage.

    We'll see how well it works. I think they're moving too fast and it's going to blow up in their faces.

  • They don't have to take down the government to hinder national development, they merely need instability and internal conflict.

    This is a weird way of going about it, but that might come down to Trump's idiosyncrasies. Trump probably thinks he can have a reality TV show trial where he'll get to yell "You're fired!" when they execute Maduro on the electric chair or something fucking stupid.

  • That's kind of how settler colonialism works. The state deputizes settlers to act as shock troopers and occupiers, but they're not necessarily state-level actors following orders. They're mostly independent and kept at a bit of distance for propaganda purposes, but when the natives strike back the army can come in and protect the settlers while pretending their actions are defending civilians.

    That's half the point of the 2nd Amendment - the other half being a concession to slave owners that needed guns to maintain order.

  • Removing heads of state is a factor of underdevelopment? It doesn't have to destroy the government, just weaken it.

    What's interesting is they went for a kidnapping instead of an assassination, but it's otherwise the same playbook.

  • I should point out that there has been a $50 million bounty for the arrest of Maduro since August, which itself was doubled from the $25 million bounty Trump put on him in January, which spells a clear picture that the US wanted him kidnapped for "trial".

    But, yeah, it's probably too novel to compare to anything directly.
