  • So I seem to have gotten it up and running with the guide the only issue is It seems really slow (compared to conduit, conduwuit, dendrite and synapse on sqlite). Also when I pick up calls on element x on graphene os I cannot hear the other user (this is on the same network both devices running graphene I did configure my coturn server but didn't try out of network calls.). When I was trying to sign up it would error on me. In order to bypass the error I just kept clicking sign up/sign in and it worked on the second or 3rd try. Device verification seems to work but you have to be really slow about working through the steps.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

  • I am not dead set on using ansible that is just the top recommendation I was recieving purely based off of how much documentation there is for it. That and iy sets up element chat for you which is what I really needed.also a postgres database. This seems a lot closer to my tempo and I will totally try to get it running! Thank you!

  • My bad I had replied to two people who had asked for it. I didn't know how to format it so I had fixed it once, but I will delete it and try to add it to the main post.

EDIT: hopefully that is better to look at!

Ansible docker playbook here we go!

Ladies and gents it is the final frontier.

I am trying to conquer the matrix docker ansible playbook. So far, because of all the knowledge I have gained setting this damn thing up around 4 times now (conduit, dendrite, synapse with sqlite3, conduwuit) things are going swimmingly.

I would say that except for now when I am running the playbook I keep getting this error:

    " fatal: [matrix.example.com]: FAILED! => changed=false msg: |- The matrix_homeserver_generic_secret_key variable must be defined and have a non-null and non-empty value.

     undefined
If you're observing this error on a new installation, you should ensure that the `matrix_homeserver_generic_secret_key` is defined.
If you think you've defined it, but are still getting this error, then it's likely that you have a typo
in your domain name in `inventory/hosts` or in one of the directories leading up to your `inventory/host_vars/matrix.example.com/vars.yml` file.

If you're observing this error on an exis

  • Yes because when someone else's suffering is worse it means your suffering is invalid. By that nature no one should ever bring up their trials and tribulations because someone always has it worse.

  • No I was deploying regular conduit. Now I am trying conduwuit and when I try and connect it says it doesn't support sliding sync. I cannot seems to find it referenced in the config file either.

EDIT: nvm I just read it is not implemented yet on conduwuit. 🥲 kind of a dealbreaker because I am trying to get element x working for group calling.

    Matrix conduit call problems

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/23726855

I decided to bite the bullet and switch from dendrite to conduit as many of you have suggested. The only problem is I cannot get my calls to connect. It just says "call connecting..." But never does. I figured it was a turn server issue but if I type in the secret key wrong in my config file calls don't pop up at all. So it is connecting to it to some extent.

I have no idea why dendrite just works with the coturn config setup yet when I apply the exact same methodology with the conduit config file it doesn't connect calls at all but seems to still connect to the turn server.

For my turn server I am using a debian digital ocean droplet. It was working perfectly for dendrite yet does not want to function with conduit.

    Any help is appreciated!

EDIT: I am using a combo of element and element x. On element x android (grapheneos) there is no notification for a call. No pop up or anything. On Element android (grapheneo

  • I had read somewhere that matrix can see integration data like sticker packs. So while they cannot read the content of your encrypted messages they can see what stickers you are sending and reacting with.

I did not look extensively into a giphy scraper. I used different terminology that probably confused the search engine 🤦 couldn't think of the word. Thank you I will look into it.

    Self hostable gif database?

This might sound silly but I really do miss sending gifs. I think it gives lighthearted fun. However I do not want to use giphy or tenor api I would rather have a bunch of gifs self hosted and accessible on my home server.

Matrix has their sticker solution but from what I have gathered they can see that data in your chats. You can get a gif plugin but I am sure matrix and giphy can see your requests with it as well.

My solution as of right now is trying to host immich and having a gif album that is accessible by my users. Reason being is the ai may prove to be useful when searching for the perfect gif/reaction. I have ran into a problem though, I have no idea how to batch download gifs from giphy and tenor. It seems people don't just share their gif collections all willy nilly like they do memes.

Is this the best solution? How would you go about self hosting such a service?

(And if you have large amounts of gifs... Can I have some 👉👈 🥺)

Sorry for the silly request for help

  • To my knowledge element x isn't feature complete. Idk if joining rooms is implemented. You could try getting the regular element client to join rooms then go back and see if they appear in element x.

I use dendrite for my private server, it doesn't support element x due to sliding sync. I'm gonna try to spin up conduit today at some point and will get back to you when I try out element x.

Why are my matrix/element push notifications so delayed?

Hello all! I have been running matrix dendrite for about a month now and it has been great! However the big problem I am facing is a very significant delay in getting call notifications. Messaging is also delayed but it hasnt been my main focus if I am being honest.

I don't know if it could possibly be my vps coturn server or if it's possibly something else. Would setting up ntfy fix this issue?

Everyone in my matrix contacts is also using the regular element android client. I've heard the client is slow, could that be the issue?

Thank you all for the help!

    Edit:

The client device that struggles with push notifications is a pixel 8 with GrapheneOS. Element was installed through f droid.

Also another problem that I have been facing is I cannot multitask while in a call otherwise it cuts my microphone. I have to stay in app to be able to talk with the person I am in the call with. (On this pixel 8 with graphene)

Edit 2: thank you all for the help! I have installed ntfy and I wi

When I lock my phone or Swipe out of element, I can hear the call but they can no longer hear me.

Is this a setting in element? Is this a feature of matrix?

Is this possibly a permission of my GrapheneOS?

I am on Matrix dendrite, am I missing out on anything important if I remain unfederated?

I have been hearing that matrix dendrite is no longer being worked on (at least unless people volunteer). I know that you cannot use element x which isn't a big loss for me. I only plan to use it for family, friends, possibly friends and family of friends.

The big loss for me would be in the privacy category of things.

I have tried getting synapse to work but only managed to have it work with sqlite3 database. I don't know how to get it to communicate properly with my postgres database for some reason. (I am using docker on ubuntu).

    Matrix coturn issues

I am trying to get coturn working on my vps provider (I am using digital ocean) for matrix rtc.

I cannot seem to get matrix dendrite to connect to it. I think I have landed on the issue being dns records in cloudflare but I am unsure. Recently I switched to cloudflare and have been using tunnels (which I use for matrix)

Matrix dendrite works fine besides rtc when I uncomment the lines for the turn server but then doesn't function at all when they are there.

I am using ubuntu with docker for matrix dendrite and I am using a debian vps with digital ocean for the coturn server.

    Any help is appreciated!

Trouble setting up sliding sync with matrix

    Hello everyone!

After much pain and agony I was able to setup my matrix server! Huzzah!

Until I went to sign in with element x :(

It says my server does not have sliding sync support. I have tried looking at the official documentation and trying to getbit working but to no avail. I went thrught the only limited tutorial provided by the actual matrix channel. Still no success.

I was able to install shildichat and that works just fine! Same with the element desktop client.

Do I need to completely restart my matrix installation to get this working? Is there an easy way to get it working now that my mattix-synapse server is already setup?

For context I followed this exact tutorial (though instead of nginx proxy manager I used cloudflare tunnel)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFDFR6EBG3k

In the video it says nothing about sliding sync but when you go to his wiki site the matrix config has been updated with an empty sliding scale patameter.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Terrible performance compared to windows on Arch with non-steam games on proton.

Hello friends! I am back with another issue.

Recently I have taken on the task to get non steam games working on Proton. I have noticed that the performance is significantly worse with them on Linux then on Windows. More frequent stutterings and such. 100 fps consistently on Windows vs linux which it dips below 50 fps. Other "better performing" non-steam games get consistent micro stutters. I am using native steam because the flathub version because after installing dependencies with protontricks the game still would not launch.

The only possible thing I can think of is the games are on NTFS partition (yet steam regular games installed on it run just dandy). I dualboot with windows and access this particular drive between both os'. I am at a complete loss, any help would be appreciated oh Linux brotheren and sisteren.

    Thank you!

(also the games drop audio consistently as well sometimes it wont come back unless I alt tab and come back to the game.)

The longer I play games on arch the worse the framerate gets.

so I recently dualbooted arch and windows. I have noticed the longer I play game the more the fps drops.

Deadlock for example, I will be getting 110-120 fps then as the match goes on (usually at the 20-40 min mark) it gradually drops to 50fps (I don't know if it will keep going, that is just the lowest I have been able to see it drop)

the outlast trials also gets pretty bad micro stutters.

I have tried reinstalling drivers removing two sticks of ram that seem to be faulty, and reinstalling arch completely with archinstall just to see if I flubbed something up around manual install, I tried the nvidia-open drivers (the ones released by nvidia) and the proprietary drivers. Nothing seems to be working.

When I launch into windows games stay at pretty consistant framerates.

Trying to figure out the best way to set up a self hosted matrix server.

I have been trying to set this up for the past 2 days and I am losing my mind.

The issue I seem to be having is that synapse cannot find the necessary postgres information in the the database. I have been trying to setup a docker container for it but to no avail. The container just continues to restart. When I check docker logs it seems like it cannot find the database info it needs but its there. I deleted the sqlite3 info so it most certainly isn't still using that.

Is there possibly a casaos friendly version of matrix? Is there an easy to follow tutorial for docker matrix and duckdns? Any help would be appreciated.
