• I also used it until I was a young adult and became aware of the harm from it.

And your philosophy is a wise one <3

  • Wait until you find out things like arrest records are public

  • There is no such automatic censorship. I assumed, from the italics, that they were referencing the word and not writing it.

The first line of my reply was:

If by “removed” you mean the R word,

    So I think I was clear. :)

  • I strongly do-not-disagree.

As always, though, we have to think about the general because if someone runs that we love but we are pretty damn sure will lose (which is NOT what I'm saying about AOC, I am speaking 100% in generalities here), then in such a case running that person is letting the fascists almost certainly win.

That is a practical and pragmatic concern.

But to me, that means NOT that we need to run the shitty right-wing Dem option....... rather, we need to try and build support for the candidate we prefer by monetary donations and donations of time (knock on doors, text, etc) and do out best to figure out how much likely support is out there and run them when we have a real chance, and maybe don't run them if we don't have a real chance.

So not only do I not disagree with you, but I have strong feelings about a "Yes, but also:" as well :)

I want progressive representation. But secondarily, I also do want the best practical representation. It's all a risk, and when the risk is worth it, GO GO GO.

  • As a cis white male, I have absolutely zero say in that.

I will say that there are previous clients of mine who still have the official medical diagnosis of "MR", i.e. "Mental removedation". That is no longer the preferred medical diagnosis.

Neither of those things have much to do with people calling people the "R" word or calling black people "coloreds" or the like.

  • So far, she would be my absolute top pick.

    However.

I am worried not even so much about her politics (with which I agree), but that I don't think the US is progressive enough for vote for a woman as President.

That said, I grant that Obama won.

But we've seen a couple of moderate women run and lose.

The fascist propaganda machine is strong, but I think it's especially strong against women.

I think that's fucking stupid, but I think that's reality.

That said… damn I hope we don't end up with Newsom. And frankly, while I voted for Harris in the general… I hope we don't end up with her. We already know a lot of people don't like her and she did struggle to have appeal on a personal level.

I don't see any really great choices right now.

I wish we could have AOC. But I also know we'd be back to Obama levels of bullshittery from the fascists, although they will also do that for any Democrat - like Biden who was generally fine enough (if not nearly as progressive as we need).

    Meh.

  • Seriously go follow him, though. He talks a little about chickens. He talks a lot about politics and race. He talks also a lot about other videos. He is absolutely hilarious. Especially note the, uh, discrepancies between what he says and the subtitles. It's an extra layer of humour.

Basically, dude is half black and half native and all bad-ass. He's started a farm in the Richmond, VA area and sells chicken, eggs, and some other stuff, which his staff helps proces and deliver around eastern Virginia. He talks about this, and is quite hilarious.

Not everyone will appreciate him, but I feel like a lot of progressives will. He's a lot of fun.

  • What is it now?

    :slow grin:

  • Would you please consider removing the "S" word from your vocabulary when it comes to describing nazis? It is hurtful to scum, as you can see here.

    don't hurt me

                                            or give me up ;-)

  • If by "removed" you mean the R word, yes. Saying that someone's cognitive development has been removed is no different than saying that by throwing an anchor out into the ocean, a ship's speed is removed.

    Context is important.

Those usages are completely different than the epithet of the R word when used to mean "stupid". It is being used pejoritively.

If you use valid uses of the word to defend pejoritive uses, then that is your choice to do so. In my book, it reflects poorly on you.

  • Yes, exactly. I hated it when I did the math so I had to share the pain <3 lol

  • I fucking read it all and comprehended, so fuck off.

  • Oh yeah? Ilkley story…

    ;-)

  • Complete unravelling will mean they hopefully lose one house of Congress but probably won't lose the other? This is stupid fucking hyperbole.

It'd be nice if it was true, but it's not.

  • Did you stop reading after my first para and ignore my second? Also, please show me where I said it was difficult.

This is why I hate Lemmy sometimes. People don't fucking read and just go off the very tops of emotional response.

It definitely makes me want to block this community if that's all it's gonna be.

    THIS THING GOOD

    THIS THING BAD

NO NUANCE ALLOW, ME NOT HAVE BRAIN TO THINK OF MORE THAN ONE THING AT A TIME

    It's not hard.

Reading apparently is. To people here, not you or just you at least.

  • well CLEARLY that means you are FRYING not POACHING. hehehe

  • terms with historical baggage,

Historic baggage maybe, but certainly not current baggage. The "R" word has current baggage.

    And that's the difference.

Yes, language changes, and we adjust - "colored" used to be the preferred word when discussing black people.

  • I don't know why you feel the need to cause unnecessary pain to those with disabilities, but that's your choice to do so.
