  • Well the most annoying issue is that BT headphones work perfectly well with a phone or laptop that has the jack, it's not an either/or situation. So they were only removed to make you have to spend $200. The arguments about cost, durability or waterproofing are all nonsense.

  • I'm only willing to buy a phone that has the jack, it reduces the selection, but I'm not willing to compromise on that. And someone gifted me some airpods recently (pro 2). Tried them out and they were ok I guess, but they also had too many downsides, so they sit on a shelf now. It's not a good enough alternative for me.

    That's so far from the truth, it hurts me to read it. Games are one of the most optimised programs you can run on your computer. Just think about it, it's a application rendering an entire imaginary world every dozen milliseconds. Compare it to anything else you run, like say slack or teams, which makes your CPU sweat just to notify you about a new message.

  • A few months ago I needed to install Google home for something Chromecast related, so I quickly searched the play store and installed it. Loaded it up and I see an ad, what the hell. App opens and I realise it isn't Google Home, it's something made to trick me into thinking it was when I wasn't paying attention.

  • Well I'm not sure it takes an expert to master a plug.

    But I'd understand the hate if it was universal (pun maybe intended), but everyone that hates micro-usb seems to adore usb-c, while I feel like it's potentially much more fragile. When handling usb-c I always use a lot more delicate care than I ever did with micro-usb. Mostly because even though I'm pretty good at soldering very tiny things, I'm not confident I could replace most usb-c receptacles without messing it up.

  • I've used more usb gadgets than most people, as I deal with electronics a lot, but I never had a single problem with micro usb. Not sure why people hate it so much.

  • Podman quadlets have been a blessing. They basically let you manage containers as if they were simple services. You just plop a container unit file in /etc/containers/systemd/, daemon-reload and presto, you've got a service that other containers or services can depend on.

  • I've been in love with the concept of ansible since I discovered it almost a decade ago, but I still hate how verbose it is, and how cumbersome the yaml based DSL is. You can have a role that basically does the job of 3 lines of bash and it'll need 3 yaml files in 4 directories.

    About 3 years ago I wrote a big ansible playbook that would fully configure my home server, desktop and laptop from a minimal arch install. Then I used said playbook for my laptop and server.

    I just got a new laptop and went to look at the playbook but realised it probably needs to be updated in a few places. I got feelings of dread thinking about reading all that yaml and updating it.

    So instead I'm just gonna rewrite everything in simple python with a few helper functions. The few roles I rewrote are already so much cleaner and shorter. Should be way faster and more user friendly and maintainable.

    I'll keep ansible for actual deployments.

  • Careful using the word efficiency there, as it has a different meaning when talking about solar panels - it indicates how much energy the panel can extract from the light hitting it. The best modern panels you can buy are below 25% efficient, and since these are from the 90s they were probably about half that when new.

  • People like to interpret things with a modern lense. The translation of his job title might be carpenter, and people then go "ok, what does a carpenter do nowadays - builds chairs and tables, right". But the word being translated is more aking to "builder", a construction carpenter, a mason, something along those lines.

  • There are two ways you can do this on Android currently, but they're not as quick. You can try to unlock with the wrong finger 5 times and it will stop allowing fingerprint unlocks. Or, you can hold down the power button for 10 seconds and the phone will reboot and also disable fingerprint unlocking.
