Cuellar had faced a dozen charges of bribery, money laundering and conspiracy. On Wednesday, he filed for reelection as a Democrat, quieting speculation that he might switch parties.

Cuellar also on Wednesday filed for reelection as a Democrat, quieting speculation that he planned to switch parties. On the House floor Wednesday afternoon, numerous Democratic colleagues greeted Cuellar warmly, hugging him and shaking his hand.
...
This cycle, he is facing a serious Republican opponent — Webb County Judge Tano Tijerina, a former Democrat, who announced his candidacy Tuesday and noted that Cuellar was facing “serious federal corruption accusations that have shaken the trust of the people he is supposed to serve,” in a statement announcing his candidacy.
stupid people vote Republican
That's not true, though. Partisanship is far more tied up with local industry than individual intelligence or educational attainment.
People who earn money in Republican friendly industries vote Republican. What the GOP has done to capture the nation is to seed big swing states with a petrochemical industry and tell people "if you vote Democrat, they're going to Green the economy and you'll lose your cushy jobs"
I've heard this argument before. It seems to neglect how much modern libertarian ideology is packed into the modern school curriculum.
Conservatives scream about education being Marxist and Woke. Thousands of teachers are purged. Curriculum gets ratcheted further to the right. And by the time your own kids are going to school, they're asking why history textbooks are venerating Newt Gingrich, bio textbooks include disclaimers decrying evolution and germ theory, and math class is just 8 hours a week of long division exercises the whole semester.
But you can't just pretend we're living in a Shepard Tone of a society, because we're here now in spite of "superior" education we received a generation or two ago.
We can't just blame this on "schools make you smart/dumb" because so much of your modem understanding of the world is formed after you've graduated.
If only there was some way to change that
Sorry, but Bari Weiss is running a story on 60 minutes about a rich black woman using food stamps to buy a fancy car. So now we're cutting the Give Surplus Food to Starving People program in half and giving twice it's value to a company run out of Hondorus by Peter Thiel's Ket dealer called QueefCoin.
Mamdani promised to execute the bourgeois class and redistribute housing to the proletariat and he's already breaking promises
it’s tankie to deny legitimate criticism
All this time, I thought "Tankies" supported military intervention by Communist states.
Turns out any disagreement with a capitalist criticism qualifies.
No wonder there are so many Tankies in here.
Harm inflicted across the general public, either to particular individual victims or as a negative externality experienced universally.
Underrated show

Taboos aren't just intended to uphold individual moral integrity. They exist to prohibit social harm.
You can't say those words. Those are Tankie words
Americans genuinely seem to believe that sexual assault in prison is an engineered intention of the prison system. We also get an earful about how rape is the consequence of inmates assaulting one another with scant acknowledgement of the chronic abuse by prison staff against inmates.
No real consideration of why the US is uniquely positioned as having some of the most dangerous and deplorable prisons in the world. No real introspection surrounding the real purpose of inmate torture and abuse, or how it facilitates the profiteering off of inmate labor.
Famously, there is no relationship between the chief executives of big business and the politicians in high office
Maduro’s grip on power relies fundamentally on electoral manipulation.
All the "Maduro cheated to win the election" stuff comes from the same people insisting Biden cheated to win in 2020 and Obama cheated in 2008.
Following the contested 2024 election, Maduro launched “Operation Tun Tun” (Operación Tun Tun), a brutal crackdown described by experts as “state terrorism”.
Were these experts affiliated with Elliot Abrams?
Conservatives do love self-owning with the anti-Castro rhetoric
Listening to people describe him as an anti-war president is so fucking gross
Most people aren’t cheering that we are rearming, but they understand that it is a necessary evil.
Plenty of people are chomping at the bit for a Glorious New War we can all watch on the TV.
Russia is right at our doorsteps
That hasn't been true in over 40 years. And even when it was true, Europeans suffered far more under the paranoid police states of their own governments than any cross border conflict.
Personally I prefer the first option.
Not like any of us have a material say, but enjoy conscription I guess.
How many wars can the US juggle at once?
It looks like someone invented a fake Russia advance in Ukraine to manipulate online gambling markets.

A live map that tracks frontlines of the war in Ukraine was edited to show a fake Russian advance on the city of Myrnohrad on November. The edit coincided with the resolution of a bet on Polymarket, a site where users can bet on anything from basketball games to presidential election and ongoing conflicts.
If Russia captured Myrnohrad by the middle of November, then some gamblers would make money. According to the map that Polymarket relies on, they secured the town just before 10:48 UTC on November 15. The bet resolved and then, mysteriously, the map was edited again and the Russian advance vanished.
To adjudicate the real time exchange of territory in a complicated war, Polymarket uses a map generated by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a DC-based think tank that monitors conflict around the globe. The battle around Myrnohrad has dragged on for weeks and Polymarket has run bets on Russia capturing the site since September. News around the pending battle has generated more
Texas education chief met with Turning Point USA to discuss group’s expansion in high schools
The meeting happened days before Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick pledged $1 million to help establish chapters of the conservative student group on every Texas college and high school campus.

Officials in at least two states outside of Texas — Florida and Oklahoma — have announced plans to establish Turning Point USA clubs on their high school campuses. Oklahoma’s Ryan Walters, the far-right activist who resigned as the state’s education chief, previously said that students would initiate the clubs and that Turning Point USA would provide them with organizational support. Walters and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have also threatened to intervene if school leaders refuse to acknowledge the youth clubs, including by going after schools’ accreditation.
The signs read in English and Spanish, "Warning: Restricted Area," and had been declared restricted by "the commander."

On Monday, men arrived in a boat at a beach in northeast Mexico and installed some signs signaling land that the U.S. Department of Defense considered restricted.
Mexico's Foreign Affairs Ministry said late Monday that the country's navy had removed the signs, which appeared to be on Mexican territory. "The origin of the signs and their placement on national territory were unclear," the ministry said in a statement.
West Chicago brothers are on the front lines against ‘Operation Midway Blitz.’ And they’re only teenagers.
At 16 and 17 years old, Sam and Ben for the past two months have made it their mission to follow, investigate and capture federal immigration activity across the Chicago area. It’s an undertaking the brothers say happened naturally after growing up in a household where social justice and civic duty were as much a part of their homeschool curriculum as math and science.
As much as the Trumpists claim to disavow the War on Terror, they walk a path paved by the most powerful vice president in US history.

The successor presidencies of Democrats Barack Obama and Joe Biden decried the power grabs Cheney pursued but mostly pocketed his gains for their own purposes. (In his case for unrestricted bombing in the Caribbean and Pacific, Gaiser cited Obama’s own marginalization of Congress to bomb Libya in 2011.) Trump now walks a red carpet of lawlessness, plutocracy and bloodshed woven by Cheney. An uncharismatic Nixon functionary—someone who might never have risen to power had Texas Senator John Tower not drunk himself out of a Pentagon appointment that instead went to Cheney—decisively shaped the destruction of constitutional governance in twenty-first-century America.
...
Cheney understood the catastrophe of 9/11 as an opportunity to accomplish and cement long-standing objectives. In the early days after the fall of the Soviet Union, Cheney’s Pentagon commissioned a study on the future course of American power from Paul Wolfowitz, an adviser who would later enjoy great influence in the B
1 in 4 ICE arrests happened in Texas under Trump’s immigration crackdown
In Texas, which has the second-largest population of undocumented immigrants in the country — with more than 1.6 million of the estimated 13.7 million nationally — the local criminal justice system has become the main funnel sending undocumented immigrants into ICE custody, according to a Texas Tribune analysis of federal government data.

Texas Sues Tylenol Makers, Claiming They Hid Autism Risks
Mr. Paxton filed the suit against Johnson & Johnson, which sold Tylenol for decades, and Kenvue, a spinoff company that has sold the drug since 2023.
The Texas lawsuit claims that the companies knowingly withheld evidence from consumers about Tylenol’s links to autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The suit also claims that Kenvue was created to shield Johnson & Johnson from liability over Tylenol.
This lawsuit is the first by a state that seizes on Mr. Trump’s allegations that the use of acetaminophen products like Tylenol during pregnancy could cause neurodevelopmental disorders. The issue has been a longstanding concern among some followers of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nation’s top health official, but the idea gained traction with Mr. Trump’s remarks.
They’ve never been arrested. Why does the FBI list thousands of service members as potential criminals?
Denise Rosales has fallen victim to a military justice process called “titling”— that’s left potentially thousands of veterans saddled with false criminal histories.

While deployed in Kuwait, Rosales, a member of the Texas Army National Guard, threw a birthday party for her husband. Some of the guests allegedly brought alcohol, according to the Army, “in a nation where such substances are illegal.” She was investigated and fingerprinted by an Army investigator, but received nothing more than an administrative reprimand.
...
But here’s the problem: Every branch of the military shares titling records in criminal databases with more than two dozen agencies, including the FBI, even if the case was dropped.
The fallout can be devastating because the records are retrievable for decades. Veterans can be passed over for promotions, rejected on apartment applications, and denied firearms clearance, advocates say. With the stain on their record, some struggle to get a job for years.
“Who will take my word over the plain text of the FBI’s criminal history?” Rosales, 39, asks in an affidavit in her lawsuit.
Rubio promised to betray U.S. informants to get Trump’s El Salvador prison deal
The deal would give Bukele possession of individuals who threatened to expose the alleged deals his government made with MS-13 to help achieve El Salvador’s historic drop in violence, officials said. For the Salvadoran president, a return of the informants was viewed as critical to preserving his tough-on-crime reputation. It was also a key step in hindering an ongoing U.S. investigation into his government’s relationship with MS-13, a gang famous for displays of excessive violence in the United States and elsewhere.
Family fears for 66-year-old’s life after assault while he was being transferred between prisons

The alleged beating followed a prison visit to Marwan Barghouti by the Israeli national security minister, Itamar Ben Gvir in August. Ben Gvir, a member of an extreme right party who has past convictions from Israeli courts for incitement to racism and support for a terrorist organisation, taunted Barghouti in a video clip published at the time.
According to Arab Barghouti, Ben Gvir also showed the 66-year-old prisoner a picture of an electric chair, and told him he deserved to be executed.
In a statement quoted in Maariv newspaper on Wednesday, Ben Gvir denied the assault allegations, but added that he was “proud that [Barghouti’s] situation has changed radically during my tenure – play time is over, holiday camps are over.

Barghouti consistently tops polls as the most popular leader among Palestinians. He has been in prison for more than 20 years after being convicted of planning attacks that led to five civilians being killed, and sentenced to five life sentences plus 40 yea
The video was pinned to Border Patrol's Instagram Reels.

The audio used in the clip comes from Michael Jackson’s controversial 1995 song “They Don’t Care About Us.” The song includes the lyrics “Jew me, sue me, everybody do me/ Kick me, removed me, don’t you black or white me.”
...
The video is very short, making it clear that the choice of lyrics was the intentional focus. Viewers are obviously meant to hear the antisemitic aspects, since it’s more or less the only audio in the 13 seconds being presented. DHS didn’t respond to questions from Gizmodo on Wednesday morning.
Comments on Instagram included people who clearly understood the message of the video as antisemitic. One commenter replied, “based song choice,” which was liked by the Border Patrol account. Another commenter wrote, “if you know you know.”
Trump Administration Authorizes Covert C.I.A. Action in Venezuela
The new authority would allow the C.I.A. to carry out lethal operations in Venezuela and conduct a range of operations in the Caribbean.
The agency would be able to take covert action against Mr. Maduro or his government either unilaterally or in conjunction with a larger military operation.
Defense Department sources tell Zeteo that staff have been warned that if they don’t watch or read the speech, or if they speak negatively of it, they could face severe consequences.

ICE tickets Chicago man with legal residency $130 for not having his papers on him: ‘It’s not fair…I’m a resident’
Where was he born? What is his name? Who is his mother? Who is his father?
“I told them, they are dead,” Cruz said. The agents said they needed the information anyway so they could look him up in their databases. Eventually, the agents verified that he is, in fact, legally in the country. And they let him go.
But not before writing him a $130 ticket for not having his papers. Cruz’s friend, who is homeless, did not have legal status and was taken away by the feds.
UK arms received by Israel reach record high value in 2025
Nearly £1 million worth of UK arms were imported in the first nine months of the year.

Last week, FactCheck revealed that Israel imported over £400,000 worth of arms from UK companies in June 2025 – the highest monthly amount since these records began in January 2022.
The exact nature of the items wasn’t specified in the data, but they were listed under a category that includes bombs, grenades, torpedoes, missiles, and ammunition.
And we can now exclusively reveal that September was the second highest value month on record, with over £310,000 worth of UK munitions under this same category arriving in Israel.
...
Israel dismissed the Commission’s report as “distorted and false” and said the expert panel were acting as “Hamas proxies”.
The UK government told us it does not “export bombs or ammunition for IDF use in military operations in Gaza or the West Bank”.
Dominion, Company at Center of False 2020 Voting Conspiracies, Is Sold to Liberty Vote for Undisclosed Amount
Liberty Vote announced the acquisition in a brief news release that proclaimed the mission of the new company would be “to restore public confidence in the electoral process.” It featured language favored by conservatives, professing to “improve election integrity in America” and “leveraging hand-marked paper ballots enabling compliance with President Trump’s executive order,” a reference to the president’s effort in March to overhaul electoral processes that has been largely blocked by courts.
The founder of Liberty Vote, Scott Leiendecker, is a former Republican election official from St. Louis with years of experience in elections. He also is the chief executive officer of KNOWiNK, a company that produces electronic poll books, digital devices that are used across the country to help election workers upload and maintain voter rolls at voting sites. In July, KNOWiNK announced that its Poll Pad “was the first electronic poll book to earn certification from the U.S. Election Assistanc
Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children Awaiting Asylum Claims
Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

The building was purchased by Wisconsin-based investor Trinity Flood in January 2020, according to Cook County records. On October 1, the day after the raid, a judge reviewed an emergency motion from Wells Fargo seeking to appoint Matthew Tarshis of Frontline Real Estate Partners as the property’s receiver.
Flood purchased three multifamily properties in South Shore in 2020. The neighborhood, which had the highest number of eviction filings in Chicago from 2015-2019 according to the Law Center for Better Housing, has seen a rise in outside real estate investors since the 2017 announcement of the Obama Presidential Center’s construction in the neighboring Jackson Park.
Wells Fargo Bank foreclosed on the building in mid-2024, bringing a $27 million lawsuit against Flood for missed loan payments. In late 2024, the City began closing its largest migrant shelters and, through state funding assistance distributed via Catholic Charities and moving support from New Life Church, relocated ma
Hours after a federal judge paused the Trump administration’s plans to deploy 200 members of the Oregon National Guard to Portland, federal law enforcement officers escalated the tactics used on protesters in the city.

Then, unlike the typical driveway clearing they did previous nights, officers began to push the crowds farther into the neighborhood by several blocks. As protesters loudly wondered why they were being asked to step back on public city streets, officers methodically marched the crowds down two separate streets on either side of the ICE facility: South Bancroft Street and South Moody Avenue.
Federal officers were flanked by videographers, toting professional equipment and wearing high-visibility vests. They filmed from behind the lines of officers, capturing the show of force. At least two drones swept over the scenes.
The march continued for roughly 15 minutes. They pushed the crowd on Bancroft down to its intersection with South Bond Avenue. There, after a pause, they dropped tear gas and other chemical munitions at protesters’ feet and legs. Officers then marched back to the ICE building in a similar, stuttered fashion, punctuating each stop with gas and volleys of pepper balls.
