  • Then it's got to be what the person below said: beating the hell out of their workers, poor conditions and benefits, stuff like that.

  • That's Reddit, too. World News there is basically all Israeli propaganda right now. It becomes a lot more diluted with more users.

  • Honestly, there's a reason hype has died down. The site has all the same problems as other alternatives.

After the initial hype, it's only as big as a reasonably large individual subreddit. In fact, here are the top weekly posts of lemmy's federation partners and T_D's exodus site. The latter edges out the former slightly in upvotes and much more substantially in comments, and it's just a single community. Even in the fairly small category of "biggest extant reddit alternative", lemmy doesn't take first prize.

Same content problem as all the others: roughly half of the posts are politics of a uniform orientation, and the other half are reposted facebook memes.

Reddit's killer app is the presence of a sizable community for every little niche thing, and that's not there. Unless your only interests are politics (within roughly .3 standard deviations of the median Huffpo writer) or Facebook memes, it's not a viable alternative.

Competition: Sure, it's federated in theory, but the block-happy, drama-centric culture means that, if an alternative were to pop up with the userbase of 2012 Reddit (or even 2018 Reddit), it'd get defederated almost immediately. Open federation solves the "dozens of sites competing for the same thousand-or-so people" problem. Closed federation just pretends to do so.

This is basically all the same issue: not enough users. It's so dumb. "Lemmy isn't as good as Reddit because everyone isn't there yet. But ya, Reddit sucks." /face-palm Then come over and get users to come over instead of saying there's not enough people.

  • When I was leaving Reddit I heard of Kbin (which I do have an account in and still check all the time), raddle.me, Tildes, squabbles, and I think another. So many!

  • In what way did he not do an insurrection? They're just trying to get laws and rulings to apply to Democrats but not Republicans now?

  • Also didn't help teachers at all. But ya, for all office workers who aren't social and especially for those of us who had a long commute, wfh was a godsend.

  • I find Reddit way more toxic, especially post the purge from the lack of apps. It's like their moderation ranked or something. It's probably different in smaller pages, but I've found the front page over there is way worse than Lemmy nowadays in terms of quality of conversation.

  • But Argentina thinks if they try it one more time...

  • A dozen times? Damn that's a lot lol. I'm about to play out my second since the expansion is out. My first playthrough was a Nomad sniper / Gorilla Arms / baseball at wielding punk. I think my second time I'll go with a Corpo stealth net runner.

  • They need to shout about these efforts more. And I'd like to see actionable results and not just endless studies. The Democrats have always been terrible at messaging. Probably because all the media is corporate owned.

  • Hello from. Ttrpg.network!

  • Seriously, someone save this and post it on X and Reddit.

  • They did strip him of stuff, he just found the Fire Stick and bought the phone - while on bail for other cybercrimes. The point is he's determined to commit crimes. You can't let someone out free in society like this. Meeting up with a probation officer every now and then isn't good enough for this kind of person. It's a compulsion. He can't even mentally stand trial right now.

  • Will probably wait until they're at least smart enough to lie about not wanting to commit more crimes. Maybe then they'll be mentally fit enough to stand trial, but I'm not sure.

  • If you throw an exclamation mark in front of it people can use it as a link with most of the apps.

  • Let me know when you see Republicans try any. I haven't seen it during my lifetime, but hey, there's always this time 🙄

  • I'm still mad it basically kicked the DnD movie out of theaters. If it wasn't for all the hype for Mario, I think the DnD movie would have done a lot better, but that's partly their fault for choosing a terrible time to release a movie - a week or two before the biggest video game franchise of all time releases their movie.

  • The problem is no one is ever going to put in the work and prep production effort that Jackson and his team did. It could be made better and more modern, but will it in our current environment? No, all the practical effects would be replaced by CGI, all the armor and costumes for the tons of extras would just be CGI, the extras themselves would be CGI, and it probably would be packed with meta commentary and jokes. Just look at The Hobbit compared to Lord of the Rings. It doesn't work without all the effort and pre-production, and I don't think we're getting a studio to ever make that bet again. It was pure luck we got it the first time.

  • I like this criteria. I'm using it.
