  • Hello I did as you advised and my system installed the kernel 6.9.4

Nothing really changed. Still hung at that same exact spot. Honestly the only thing I'd like right now is to know what Job dev-mapper-cl\x2dswap.device/start means

    Still thank you for replying

  • Sorry for responding so late I was busy at the moment.

I didn't fully understand what you meant by " run updates until you get a 6.9"

Also what exactly should I be downloading and installing. The new patched kernel?

Fedora 40 won't boot with Kernel 6.8.10 or above

My Fedora 40 system won't boot with any kernel over 6.8.10.

I've had this problem for about a month now and have been putting it off, as I haven't really been using my computer recently, but it needs to be addressed.

I'm running a Fedora 40 KDE 6 distro, which was upgraded from Fedora 39. It's been working pretty well for the half year I've been using it but recently I've encountered an issue. About a month ago, after upgrading my system to kernel 6.8.10, my system started to hang while in boot.

  • I haven't changed anything hardware wise and I haven't changed anything involving partitions in months.

In kernel 6.8.9 my swap mounts perfectly I don't have any idea what I should change in order to fix 6.8.10.

Fedora 40 boot hangs with kernel 6.8.10

For the past couple days, my Fedora 40 install has been hanging with kernel 6.8.10-300.

For the past couple days I've been booting from kernel 6.8.9-300 as whenever I try to boot from kernel 6.8.10-300 my boot gets stuck at: Job dev-mapper-cl\x2dswap.device/start

I've been trying to figure this out on my for a bit but as Fedora is now at kernel 6.8.11 the next update may remove kernel 6.8.9 as an option to boot from and I'm afraid I won't be able to boot from my system.

If anyone knows what is wrong or could give me some advice as to how to read that message I would appreciate it very much.

  • I didn't realize I had it either, I'll see what I can do to fix it tomorrow because right now, I'm tired and hungry.

BTW, thank you for your help. Your comments and explanations have been a great in helping me understand my issue and Linux in general.

  • I went into /audit.log you asked, I'm gonna be honest as a total linux newbie I have no idea what im looking at . I don't really know what's supposed to be an error and what's irrelevent. This is the only thing that stick out to me

  • What chown command should I try. I've already tried

    sudo chown -R adelie:adelie /home

Honestly I feel like I've done everything at this point. Do you think I should reinstall fedora and partition root as ext4 instead of btrfs?

  • So I did that and nothing different happened. I'm sorry to keep taking your time like this do you know of any place, like a Discord server or something, that I can talk with somebody about this in real time.

I'm probably going to give this issue one more day to resolve before I give up and switch to Windows 11.

  • So I ran all three commands including the one /u/Max_P gave. I then changed the fstab and rebooted. I still couldn't login after that.

I then tried to login with TTY. it gave me the same error as in the post. I ran the three commands again and rebooted. still nothing

I logged in with my root account and ran the three commands again, rebooted and still couldn't login. I then fixed the fstab and now I'm back here again.

just to be clear i ran chmod 700 not 755.

Anything I should run in order to check my system? I must've done something wrong. Maybe it has to do with btrfs?

I can't change my /home location, and it's driving me mad

For the past week, I've been trying to switch my /home partition from my 500GB nvme to my 1TB sata ssd. I've been asking and receiving help from people in my previous post, but I keep hitting wall after wall in making it work and I seem to be missing a step.

Big thank you to @pixelscript@lemmy.ml, @NateSwift@beehaw.org, for replying to my comments and helping me along.

Hello I'm Doctor_Rex after 2 posts asking multiple questions I have finally installed Fedora KDE 39 on my desktop.

My Windows 10 install broke, but I'm hesitant to switch to Linux.

I would show you an image of my neofetch but lemmy won't let me place it due to file size so ¯(ツ)_/¯.

I would have installed it sooner but due to poor decisions I made when making this PC I had to wait for a Linux compatible WiFi card to arrived.

    My experience with Fedora KDE:

I've been using Fedora for about 2 days now and, to a degree, it's working just fine, KDE is slick and is easy to customize. Fedora itself works just fine and it's discover store works well enough. That said I need some extra help before I fully dedicate myself to daily driving Fedora.

Hello I'm Doctor_Rex I'm the OP of this post:

My Windows 10 install broke, but I'm hesitant to switch to Linux.

I'd like to start by thanking everybody who responded to my questions. Your answers have helped a lot when it came to my worries on switching to Linux.

I've taken in a lot of your recommendations: Fedora, Fedora Kinoite, Nobara, Bazzite Linux, VanillaOS,

I've decided on Fedora Kinoite, as it has everything I want from a distro.

It was very kind of you all to answer my questions but after making that post and reading your answers new questions propped up.

These questions are a little more opinionated than the last ones, and a little better thought out, but please take some time to answer them.

My Windows 10 install broke, but I'm hesitant to switch to Linux.

As the title say's, my Windows 10 install broke, but I'm still unsure whether or not to reinstall Windows 10 or install Linux.

    Context:

A few months back, Windows 10 updates started to fail on my desktop. I had considered just reinstalling the OS but as my machine was working just fine I simply tolerated it.

Today, when my machine auto-updated it broke something. At first I thought the update worked. But soon I realized that the taskbar was acting odd. All the shortcuts I had placed on my taskbar were working as usual, but when I right clicked them nothing would happen. I clicked on the start menu and the search bar but nothing happened. Most of the widgets on the right side of the taskbar weren't working such as Volume, Wi-Fi, Date & Time, and Notifications. I assumed it was just the taskbar that was broken but when I tried to use the windows key to open the settings menu, it didn't work either, nor did it's keyboard shortcut.

It seems the update had broken some apps that, th
