  • Perhaps someone can help me understand the difference between an anthropromorphic animal mascot (which as a tale as old as time) and a furry? When does one cease to be one and becomes another?

There are animal mascots all the time in sports. Why is that not weird, but it's weird to have a sporty animal mascot for coins?

  • Don't take it personally, applying for a job is a game of chance as much as a game of merits. It's simply a numbers game and luck whether your resume even gets looked at in the first place, even if you're résumé how all their keywords. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of other resumes also hit their keywords.

If you're lucky enough to get through the first sifting and get an interview with the hiring person (not an HR screener who doesn't know anything about the job), then you can ask and maybe get a response on how you could have improved. (Don't ask why you weren't hired.)

  • goes by Robert

I'm sorry, I think you just short circuited my brain. JK Rowling, who has so publicly and venomously been anti-trans... has spent the last few years pretending to be a man?????? What in the hypocrisy is wrong with her??!?!

And now that you mention it, I'd read a long time ago, before she became public with her TERF-ness, that she went by "J K" on the HP books instead of Joanne because she or the publishers didn't want to discourage boys from picking up a book written by a woman. And now that I'm typing this, I realize the fact that she wrote her books from a boy's perspective, too. So in all these examples, she's inhabiting a male persona.

My brain... can list these facts, but cannot compute them together.

  • While there must certainly be some devout Muslims who try their best to keep the "rules", as I'd expect in any group, a lot of Muslims are not so different frombthe rest of us non-Muslims.

My coworker is a former Muslim who had to leave his home country due to persecution when he became a Christian. Here, he's made Muslim friends who regularly invite him over for dinner and they serve... Pork. They say because he is not a Muslim, they respect that and don't force him to eat halal. But why does not forcing him to eat halal equate to them eating pork?

They are genuinely his friends, but he is also their "excuse" to break halal.

  • Mostly just Discovery and Picard is kind of halfway there.

SNW is a really fun watch once they've dealt with Pike's future (which they kind of really have to). Personally I like that they go for different genres, but I can see why some people might not like that if.

Lower Decks is a riot and a half and I think it's my favourite Star Trek, but it might be kind of cheating because it stands on the shoulders of all the other shows.

Prodigy is quite a bit different from the other shows, but it's full of optimism, hope, and friendship. It doesn't start out that way, they're all very suspicious of each other at first. They grow into it as they learn more about themselves and each other, and aspire to be part of the Federation and Starfleet.

  • Netflix literally will not take my money anymore. I had cancelled my subscription during covid because money was tight, but I was willing to temporarily re-subscribe when the next season of select shows came out. I tried to re-enable my original account, but I couldn't because they wouldn't accept my credit card. I tried different cards, then tried to make new accounts with different emails and different credit cards, but still couldn't. Netflix kept rejecting all my cards. I ran out of credit cards.

Look, I was willing to give Netflix my money, it's not my fault they were unwilling to take it.

  • This is utterly ridiculous and such a thinly veiled racism. It's disgusting that a school principal and members of the school board collectively want to punish this kid so badly for being black they'd go to court to do it.

If there's a go fund me or other fundraiser for court costs for this kid and his family, I'd gladly throw money at it.

  • One time I had to use a website where the email 2FA expired in 30 seconds! I usually keep my email client open while my computer is on, but, come on, that was ridiculous.

  • Paying for content is one thing. Besides greedy studio execs, there are a lot of small potatoes people trying to make honest livings who work to produce the final products.

Ads, though, are supposed to defray COSTS. Marketers part studios to run ads. Cinnamon paying for ads is an oxymoronic situation.

  • I have sensitivity to certain lighting and find amber glasses help me a lot. I don't know if it's the same as your issue, but it's be worth trying. I first tried it with a pair of $10 clip ons I bought at the hardware store. They were meant for highlighting contrast for outdoor activities. One since gotten prescription glasses with amber lenses for work.

  • You're too optimistic. Anti-vaxxers can and do still blame everyone and everything else before changing their minds. Only select few will have the awareness to change. People were literally on their deathbeds dying of covid still cursing the doctors who were supposedly killing them. The children and other people they spread to, they don't deserve to die. But I have no patience left for contrarian wilful assholes, they deserve(d) their deaths.

  • I don't know how he puts up with it, but I do know why. He was alone since he was a teen, and now his wife and in-laws are his only family. His dream has always been having a family and community. He'll bend over backwards to please his in-laws. It's unfortunate they treat him like that, and while his wife is sweet, she's a pushover and doesn't stand up for him.

Why the in-laws are like that? I don't know.

  • Get this: my friend is "not allowed" to be left alone with his daughter. His own daughter. If wife needs to go out without baby, baby gets dropped off at grandparents (wife's parents) instead of just staying home with dad. What's even more ridiculous is his profession is early childhood educator. He's more qualified than most other parents out there, male or female. I don't know how he puts up with being insulted like that.

  • You might enjoy "A Christmas Movie Christmas", where the protagonists wake up and find themselves as the protagonists in a Christmas movie reality. It's a comedy where you basically laugh at the troops while they call themselves out on it.

  • I used to provide some user support at a previous job. (It wasn't exactly my job, but people would ask for help.) And it'd be easy to get frustrated, thinking people were stupid or incompetent, but I'd remind myself that being good at computers isn't part of their job, it's part of my job. These people were hired for other areas of expertise. If I had to do take on parts of their jobs, I'd look stupid and incompetent too.

That said... sometimes the level of incomprehension people have really is incomprehensible to me. There's a level where you're reaching wilful ignorance. When I point at something on the screen and tell the person to click on that... and they can't or won't move the mouse there and click on it...

  • Tai chi, my people. It's often thought of as an old person's activity, but it's great to start young to keep yourself feeling young.

  • I signed up for a Google Ads account for a non-profit I volunteer with. I had to verify the organization with governing documents, okay, fair enough. They also "require" my drivers license or passport. Excuse me? We will no longer have a Google Ads account after Sept 15 (the cut off to verify my identity).
