Opening link opens Chrome with blank page

Starting a few weeks ago, everytime I click on a link in Jerboa it opens Chrome to the default page, rather than navigating to the link I'm supposed to go to.

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

Timed Mute Community/User

Sometimes, it may be good for one's mental health to "take a break" from a community or user. It would be nice to be able to temporarily block posts from a user or community that one may otherwise enjoy in a 1h/6h/1d/1w or possibly arbitrary time period.

1

homing upon tapping the app icon is truly disruptive!

After the most recent update, the view always return to the top of local homepage.

This is very disruptive, since some users would press home when they want to use another app, and would tap the icon on the homepage to go resume what they were doing.

I actually tried to write this post earlier, but something came up that requires me to context switch. When I was done with that, I tapped Jerboa icon on my homepage (muscle memory). To my surprise, the post I was writing disappeared, replaced by the local homepage. I don't even browse local that often...

2

Links will not open properly

Whenever I try to click on any post link, it opens up whatever my most recent Chrome tab was. Clicking any post link essentially just works as a shortcut to open Chrome. This just started happening to me this morning.

¿Is there a convenient way to preview the actual URL behind a hyperlink before visiting it?

Markup let's you label a link which is really nice for readability but can also be used to trick people into opening a different site from what they are shown. For example the link below suggests it takes you to a Mastodon instance but if you blindly tap it it will take you somewhere else:

https://mastodon.social/explore

Is there a quick and convenient way to check the actual URL behind a link? I know that it's possible to show a post as plain markup but in longer posts with potentially multiple links it's cumbersome to correlate what is what.

Ideally long tapping a link should show you the actual URL or alternatively you always get a small confirmation pop up with a simple tap (that's how it worked on RIF for instance).

Just sanity checking if I'm missing anything, else I might submit a feature request.

Edit: looks like this was added in a recent update. Get the newest version and it will let you long press a link to get an options menu.

Spaced words get clumped together when pressing backspace to erase words

When I am typing and press the backspace, the words get clumped together that shouldnt have been.

Bug report: can't load additional comments

When I click on links like the one circled below, nothing happens at all.

Feature Request: Have image links when used as a source for links (in the link button), format to display as an image in a comment.

Basically one cool thing you can do here is link an image in a comment and have it display automatically.

I was wondering if we could get a feature that if the URL ends in an image extension and has no text in the text box it tries to have it be a direct image.

The formatting for images doing that is:

Feature Request: A template for spoiler like we have templates for bold, italics, quote, etc.

I was recently browsing a thread and I wanted to flag something as a spoiler. I've seen other posts do it elsewhere so I dug around until I found out how.

I found it odd that we didn't have a quick template like the other ways of typing things out.

And for those curious how to tag things as spoilers this is how:

Like this

Tada

!

Edit: It could even be styled like it is for links, a box for the spoiler title and a box for spoiler text.

Bug? "This account is not in a ready state yet."

EDIT: Probably solved: Not an issue of Jerboa but Blokada interfering with the internet connection checks.

I thought I would ask here if someone else experiences this strange behaviour.

So I have updated my app to the latest version which is available on f-droid (which is 0.0.42 - I think there is already a 0.0.44 on github?). Since then I have the problem that I can neither vote, comment or post in the app. Trying to do so results in the above error message. If I try to open my profile, I get the message that I don't have internet connection which I clearly have. I mean the content is loading. It would be weird if they do without Internet. :) Next to my user name there is this warning triangle but I don't know what that means

If I go back to 0.0.41 everything works fine. No error messages and no triangle. I will add some screenshots for clarification.

Feature request: No limit on pinch to zoom

My eyesight is not the best, so when I'm on mobile I have to pinch to zoom quite often. I've had it happen several times on Jerboa that I'm unable to zoom in enough on small text on an image because I'm prevented from zooming far enough in.

Is this a feature that can be added? It would be nice to simply zoom to one's heart's content.

(Unrelated, but I do love the app overall.)

Used official apps for (https://mastodon.social/@Mastodon) (https://lemmy.ml/c/jerboa) and (https://mastodon.social/@pixelfed)

Used official apps for @Mastodon @jerboa and @pixelfed The first two look dope ngl.

Feels like the latter one could do a Material You redesign. Kind of looks like an iOS app. I will try to drop a few design concepts :welp: 🔜.

P.S. : Not hating on the design.

Menu on posts gets pushed off screen

Occuring on the newest version on android. Maybe someone knowledgeable ongithib can open an issue or even fix it themselfes.

The last shown symbol might also weirdly get smaller if there is not enough space for the whole symbol.

Trying to expand comments (e.g., 3 additional responses in the pic below) is causing the app to crash.

Jerboa deletes login, if instance is unreachable.

So, past few days, the instance I have my account in, seems to crash and burn every morning, when I would like to browse it. I wouldn't otherwise mind waiting fir the few minutes it takes to the issue being fixed, but Jerbia decides it's a great idea to PURGE EVERYTHING if there is any sort of hitch in the login.

Now, I do notice I get a some sort of javascript error every time this happens, and I suppose it's a null reference error, but I also imagine the issue is not isolated to a situation where the instance itself is down, but can probably be replicated by a local network outage. And an easy solytion is to add a variable that tells the app that the logins used has been valit, with an option to change the password, rather than just lose everything. Zure, it might be cool if there was a tiny check to see if the instance exist, when loging in with a saved credentials, and notify about not being able to reach it, but the most important feature would be to have a "newly invalid login" to still exists within the app.

[EDIT]: To clarify: even if the logins on the app would still be there after the instance comes back up and the app has been restarted, the issue still presists, because there is no excuse for displaying the credentials as forgotten, and defaulting to anonymous, where you could simply display an error that implies the logins are still ther, but not reachable. Tint the username red, and add [login error] at the namespace. Or better yet, add a tiny ⚠️ icon in front of the handle, that will provide information aboit the error.

I am not looking how to solve this for myself, I am reporting a bug/oversight that will affect peoples retention rate with not just Jerboa, but with Lemmy as a whole. Now, I know Jerboa isn't the only client out there, but I'd rather see it get better than try and find an alternative, but if the welcome for suggesting an improvement is "it's not really a problem to me, so I don't even care if it's a good suggestion, you should just get over it too", I'm rather tempted to jump ship if an alternative pops up.

While some people might consider this "just a quality of life thing, L2B, noob", I'd say this is one of the things why open source centric apps rarely take off properly: the UX sucks because it's dismissed as "unimportant, because I coded it, and I know how to use it and whst it does under the hood".

Menu missing on seen posts

You know there is the tree points on every post and every comment where the further options like blocking, sharing, copying and so on is.

This menu doesnt show up when you click on a post you have already seen. This makes no sense as the menu us there on seen posts before clicking the post

2

The app hides seen posts, everywhere.

Tldr: If "Show read posts" is off, it hides seen posts. But it also hides them when viewing a communitys top posts and even on your own profile under "Posts".

Let me explain: Lets say you click through your feed, see a bunch of posts from a community. Then you make a own post to that community.

After that you see that your post have blown up, so you want to see, if it is the topmost post in this community. So you search for the community and sort for "top all time".

Now the problem: It in the settings you have "hide seen posts" you cannot see the posts, any posts, that you have seen previously, not even your own. And not even in your own profile, where every post is already read, so its eternally empty.

I think that being on a community should overrule the "hide seen" setting.

2

Bug: Comments indented in opposite order.

When viewing individual comment trees, usually by opening a comment from my own history that has replies on it, or just clicking view context: the original comment is the furthest indented, with the replies indented one less, and further replies to those less indented still until the lowest level comment appears as the oc, but at the bottom of the list.

Here's an example:

  • @Novalong@lemmy.today if this is actually crashing Jerboa, perhaps you should edit this post to make it not have the URL automatically loading? (especially since this is in the Jerboa community!)

@dessalines@lemmy.ml the image in question is here and here (they're the same file with the same hash on both servers)

Depending on how you installed it might not allow you to install this release version

Note replacing an existing install with this version, will probably delete your app info (it should tell you) use debug version instead if that is not wanted app-release_zoomable.zip

  • Those pixels are your bar image from your user profile. They "leak" a pixel

This is how they look for me:

Change your banner pic to a red block to test my explanation.

  • Is there a way to upload more than one image at a time per post?
  • You can post a link to an Imgur album like this post did. It is not free and charges a little bit for its API but it is the most widely supported image host so some frontends have an Imgur gallery viewer built in. That's what Reddit users did before the long-overdue introduction of native albums.

However, there will likely be no preview in feeds. Look how your app handles it by visiting the user’s page: @Prismo@lemmy.world

  • Ability to block domains
  • I don't know if that's really on Jerboas road map. You might want to look at some of the other apps that already include such features. The one I am using right now allows that and has a bunch of other great features, like multies and mod actions.
