What is publicly viewable and to who on lemmy?

Upvotes, downvotes, comments are available to the general public.

For IP logs is it only the admin of the instance account is created on that could view it? Or is it also the mods on the instance? Can every other admin or mod from another instance view the information?

What about for saves and messages?

By default admins of each instance can access everything from accounts that were created there, but unsure of the access available to everyone else. Would be fun to learn what federation with other instances and participating in them reveals to the admins/mods of those other instances.

  • Mods don't have special insights.

I might be wrong but believe remote instances don't communicate directly with clients but rather with the server and would thus only know the same things available to everyone else (no IPs, etc). If this is correct, other instances admins don't have any special insights either.

At least on this instance, IPs are anonymized by the default Lemmy config. There is a database which stores saves and messages that someone with terminal access to the server could access, none of this is available through the user interface and I personally won't go digging through it but since you have to trust my word on that, I'd advise to not use lemmy messages for highly sensitive conversations. I've seen a "secure message" button somewhere so perhaps encrypted messages are/will be a thing soon.

  • Sorry for noob question, but: With "Upvotes, downvotes, ... are available to the general public." we're just talking about the amounts!? Or is it also possible to see who up-/downvoted?
