  • I can choose the job I have - even if it takes time or effort or might be scary, I'm not forced to go somewhere where I am bullied, demeaned, and punished every day.

I can choose where I live. Changing where I live might take time or effort or be scary, but I'm not forced to live where it is unbearably hot and humid, where the only way to get anywhere is by driving a car, or where the only thing people listen to is trashy pop country.

I can choose what I do for fun. There are infinite options, and it might take time or effort or be scary to try something new - but I have options other than staring at a tv screen or walking in the hot sun past row after row of identical, boring houses.

I can choose what I eat. There are lots of options, and sometimes I need to exercise a little self control. But I'm not forced to eat nothing but processed junk food and soda that makes me sick, fat, and depressed.

I can choose who my friends are. Going out and making new friends can take time and effort, and sometimes it"s scary - but I'm not restricted to meeting people only because the constrained circumstances of my life dictate it.

Being an adult can be frustrating, hard, and scary sometimes. Sometimes I feel like I'm doing everything wrong. Sometimes I feel like my dreams are impossible. Sometimes I feel like I just can't handle it as misfortune after misfortune pile up on my back. But I love being an adult, because I'm free. I'm free to fail, and free to succeed. Free to explore, and meet people, and try new things. Free to keep going, and try my damnedest to make a life worth living. And that makes me happy to be an adult.
