CBC has whitewashed Israel’s crimes in Gaza. I saw it firsthand
I'm sorry, this must be a different CBC than the one I'm following. The one I'm following barely goes a day without detailing the horrors. The hospital bombings, the starvation/famine, the killing of journalists, and so on. I mean, the CBC ain't perfect, but it's definitely not whitewashing the situation in Gaza. Even when the news making event is about the Israeli hostages (not too often nowadays), a sizeable chunk is still dedicated to the horrors in Gaza to put it into perspective. And I don't think I've ever seen a statement from Israeli government officials get aired without serious scrutiny in the last year.

I expressed concern to my team about the frequency of Palestinian guests getting cancelled, the scrutiny brought to bear on their statements, and the pattern of double standards in our coverage. After this, I pitched a reasonable and balanced interview: two genocide scholars with opposing views discussing whether Israel’s actions and rhetoric fit the legal definition of the crime.
Senior colleagues sounded panicked. My executive producer replied that we had to be ”careful not to put hosts in a difficult position.” They wanted time to consult with higher-ups before making a decision. A few hours later, I was sitting across from the same executive, being warned about “crossing the line.”
But that wasn’t the end of the blowback. The next week, late on a Friday afternoon, I received an email from the same two managers who had poured cold water on my pitch. They needed to speak to me urgently. Over the phone, I was asked to keep the conversation secret.
They told me I had hurt the feelings of some of my co-workers. But it was more than just hurt feelings: someone was accusing me of antisemitism. I had, it appeared, “crossed the line.”
I remember when Francesca Albanese was interviewed on Front Burner, Jayme Poisson seemed likely sympathetic to Albanese's arguments but was dealing with clear lines that had been set for her not to cross and canned phrases that had to be inserted presenting Israel's narrative. It was awful. That was November of last year and at that time it seemed she was pushing CBC limits just by having Albanese as a guest.
The National cleary pushed the Israeli narrative for a long time, even regularly having Israeli spokespeople on to push their narrative while having no Palestinian representation. They have improved on that now, when it has become completely untenable to deny the horror of what's being done, but they seem to have been dragged there against their will.
The concern for me is that CBC will report people in Gaza are starving, being killed, etc. but they are reluctant to attribute the cause as genocide, expansionist policy, or anything that faults Israel. The horrors are being portrayed as natural consequence rather than a purposeful choice.
It’s like reading a police report of a shooting where “a firearm was discharged at an agitated suspect” instead of “a cop shot an unarmed man.”
Seconded. I watch CBC precisely because of their unbiased, unvarnished reporting of the horrors that the Palestinian people are suffering from.
And the title of this video - which I can only assume was fake and has been taken down, because it is currently inaccessible - is somewhat unbelievable. Why would oppressed natives, themselves victims of genocidal colonizers, support the genocidal colonizers of another place?
CBC is still hiding a lot. Intentionally.

Good. The CBC has been biased on this. Only recently have they started more openly sharing critical views, but for most of the time this has been going on there was a strong pro-Israel bias. Even now, they are very cautious on the national programming about how they describe it. Compare it to how the situation with Ukraine and Russia is covered and the contrast is stark. The CBC is capable of putting blame on a party and making stark accusations of brutality of intent, but they're still very cautious about Israel.
