What band, artist, or song do you enjoy listening to that is widely disliked?

Duran Duran fuckin slaps.

- Come Undone is one of the coolest songs I've ever heard. I've never been able to figure out if it's about living in the closet though. The lyrics could be interpreted as such, and the video definitely reinforces that concept.

I only found out a few years ago that Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm by Crash Test Dummies was commonly regarded as one of the worst songs of the 90s, but it reminds me of middle school and summers at the pool. Same with Sex And Candy by Marcy Playground.

- The other day I heard sex and candy for the first time in ages. I got immediate nostalgia. The song has a GREAT hook and I totally see why middle school me liked it. Sex. Candy. Cool vibe.
  But hearing it now, i quickly realized the lyrics aren’t mysterious/poetic. They are meaningless and had nothing to say except repeating the chorus over and over and over because the words sound good together.
  
  You should give the album a try. It's really good.

Once you get past their boring singles, Nickelback isn't all that bad.

- I don't think there's that many people who dislike Nickelback. It just became trendy to dislike them, so people jumped on the bandwagon, regardless of whether they actually cared either way.

  My parents took us to one of their concerts in like 2008. They were surprisingly good live.
- I tried because so many of my friends dig them. I just can't get past the songs that seem like they're written with a rhyming dictionary and they're full of teeny bopper cliches. I love the guitar tone and some of the riffs but I just can't get past those dumbass lyrics.

I’ll say it, I like Imagine Dragons. They have some great songs, they just also have some radio rock drivel (oh god Thunder is bad). Also, I saw them live back in 2013 and it’s one of the best concerts I’ve been to.
- In 2022, they were my then-12-year-old child’s favorite band, so I took the kiddo to see the band in Milwaukee. Holy shit, they put on a FANTASTIC concert.
- My wife discovered them about idk... 6 years ago? She was crazy about their music. She listened to it all the time, and put the music videos on our home theater. Then out of nowhere she suddenly decided that she hates them. She still hates them to this day. I think it might be because their music is so repetitive that it sounds catchy at first and then gets really annoying. Whatever the reason, they cultivated a super fan and then lost her all within a couple of months.
- Unfortunately they became a bit annoying after a bit but looking back, they've put out some fantastic tracks that are hard not to groove to

- That's the problem with autogenerated playlists. I really like it, but can't remember the names of the bands - especially since half of them are Cyrillic.
  
  I don't know, that's what I like about my playlist. No loyalties. If I like it, it's in. From rap to classical I got it! Maybe even a few country songs, but those are the very rare for me.

I actually like Nickelback and Matchbox 20.
- My Highschool Girlfriend was a huge Matchbox 20 fan, so I took her to one of their concerts. I gotta say, I was impressed. They do a great show.
  
  Me too! They were kind of a band that was assembled by a recording label too. They've an interesting and atypical history.
- Is Matchbox 20 supposed to be a band that people hate? I'm familiar with the Nickelback hate, but I've never heard anything bad about Matchbox 20.

Mindless Self Indulgence: Yeah, the lead singer was obviously a piece of shit, but their music was still catchy.

  They were popularish maybe 20-25 years ago, but the singer was a creep. Presumably still is if he's alive.

  A lot of people criticize the direction they've taken recently, and while I don't keep up with their newest releases, Viva la Vida is still one of my favorite songs. And other tracks like Paradise, Sky Full of Stars, etc. will always be fun for me to listen to as well

I see people hate on Imagine Dragons, Creed, and Nickelback (though the latter two not so much recently)... I like these bands.
- Nickelback is good, especially the early music. Imagine Dragons is similar in that they both are kinda hated because their music is really mainstream and accessible, which is in my opinion a pretty weird reason to hate the bands.
  
  I can understand hating something because it's overplayed and you've heard it so much that it just makes your skin crawl.
  I have that with Queen's Radio Ga Ga. When I was working on a cruise ship at 19, I boarded while it was still being constructed and out of the 2 weeks it was in drydock before we set sail, 1 of them was spent testing the PA system by playing that song, on loop, 24/7 for a week straight with no breaks. It was psychological torture. I liked the song at first; never heard it until that. But now, I want to punch a thousand babies if I hear it.

I think a lot of people got burnt out on sex and candy, but Marcy playground's first two albums are legitimately fantastic. I didn't even get into them until like 2018
- I had that album when Sex and Candy was popular and I loved it as an early teen. I didn't register to it until probably 10+ years later, but it's damn good. I them quickly picked up all their music released after that and it's great, too.
  Got to see them live in a small venue back in 2012 or so and they were great.
- Sex and Candy got overplayed so much on radio, it was everywhere. I remember mom switching radio station because it came on like twice in the same hour and the station she fliped to was playing it as well.
  There were so many good songs just ran into the ground like that.

I’m not sure how many bands even sit in the widely known and also disliked by most Venn diagram. The only example I can even think of is Phish, which I can’t stand but I know a guy who lives his whole life around their touring schedule.

- Phish is a weird one. When I listen to a whole record it kind of all sounds like one long song. An experimental variation on the theme. But live.... Holy s***. I'll go see him anytime they're close.

Nickelback, although I barely listen to them anymore because my music taste changed

  The majority of it is softer. There's been a lot more synthesizer keyboard type stuff since 2018 or so. Jimmy and James are also back in the band.
- It doesn’t help that Billy Corgan is a MAGA Republican.
  
  Worked with Billy about a year ago on his wrestling program.
  I heard him tell a small audience of people that he was, "Rock n' Roll."
  The context was in regards to covid protocols, something like "I'm Rock n' Roll and all, but we've gotta do what the facility says..."
  Not the worst in context I suppose, but I just couldn't get past, "I'm Rock n' Roll", falling out of his mouth.

Even though they seem to receive a lot of criticism and have a bad rep, and some people seem to really hate them, I've actually always liked Nickelback.

I listen to a lot of stuff that would be widely disliked if it were widely heard. Extremely dissonant, abstract, and harsh avant-garde metal is for very few people. It's hard to describe it without sounding like a dopey elitist type, but I just like caustic, hostile, and often formless stuff.

The Strokes - Comedown Machine is often called their worst album but, id argue it's one of their best
- The Strokes in general are a fantastic band and there's been no album of theirs that I haven't enjoyed including Comedown Machine

  You would be surprised. They seem to be a very love them or hate them type of band. They were pretty wild in the early days too (pre cali), so had some bad press during a lot of the me too/cancel culture thing.
  I’m a huge fan of Frusciante. Like he’s basically the reason I learned anything on guitar.
  
  I do, I remember I once hitchhiked across Europe and my ride put on Stadium Arcadium. I almost died. And when it was over, the real surprise came. It's a double CD.
  I think RHCP is the best musical example of 'Awful taste, great execution' (for me). Good musicians, but it makes my fucking skin crawl.
- Been listening to more of them recently, and songs like Dark Necessities have been stuck in my head lmao
- Freaky Styley was the RHCP album that bridged rock and funk for me. It's produced by George Clinton (he's even lead vox on a track). Now I salivate over Parliament/Funkadelic and my friends think I'm crazy.

- Nah, most of us appreciate both. Both are great
- I don't think RHCP are widely disliked. They've been at the top of radio playlists for decades, they're incredibly popular, and they sell out major venues every time they tour. RHCP is bad ass. Anyone who dislikes them probably also dislikes being happy.

My thread prediction was spot on. We all secretly listen to Nickelback.

I've only listened to a couple of ICP songs and genuinely quite liked them

One of the few albums from my youth I can listen to is Anti-Nowhere League - We are the League
It was a kind of joke album mocking punk music and some of their bigotry and phobias, but of course people took it at face value and thought it was serious.
It's an absolute work of offensive genius and beautifully produced
