They should be hatchbacks and sedans.
Wagons are still wanted by many as well and there's practically nothing on the market. Full tall tailgate, not those slopy things and no pointless height.
I would buy an (non Toyota) electric coupe that's reasonably priced and sized but that's admittedly an unfashionable niche market to be in. Not that far from a sedan, though. Remove rear doors, b pillar, window frames, lower roof line and the rest is pretty close the same. Several makers know how to do it. Mercedes has made tons.
I don't get SUVs in Europe. In the USA they have that tax fuckup making them more profitable. Why not produce and sell more sensible cars here :/

Me neither. The quality of roads is beyond excellent, and usually roads that are considered "worse" are still much better than those considered better right outside EU. And they are driveable by even low-clearance cars[1]! It makes even less sense for EVs, taking into account that added weight of an SUV increases cost and lowers the reach of a car.
I have only two assumptions, first one being: everyone got into belief that SUVs/crossovers have more space than sedans of same size. Which really is an illusion, and even sellers usually say, where the sizes match. In fact, a kombi car will have so much more space, compared to SUV, that it is really impossible to compare.
Another assumption is feeling like a Cool Guy®. Even today I saw a guy riding a BMW, which has bunch of "turbo power" stickers, while sitting alone in a crossover. It's like Macs, which are very average laptops, but everyone wanted them, because of an Apple effect.

Good intentions, wrong format, years too late.
If you want to purchase ethically then buy European owned and made as far as possible.
If not, then European made by foreign companies that weren't actively working against the transition to EVs (yes I'm looking at you Toyota) such as Nissan Volvo and Stellantis (the latter 2 are part Euro but not fully).
Only if you can't do that buy Toyota or Korean. Chinese as a last resort.
