  • I used Affinity on Mac and Windows. It was the affordable, well-thought-out, performant Photoshop competitor and is now free to use (with a Canva account). Some folks got it running with wine and there is an easy to use appimage ( see articlke )/

I got it running easily, but didn't test it fully, yet.

  • Self-hosted and bridged: half a year.

I quit that experiment and registered an account at a generic instance. Needless to say: it is only me and some public rooms.

None of my peers engages me there. They really don’t want to waste time with registration, backup keys, and concepts.

  • Affinity

Someone just recently managed to get it going.

  • Hosted matrix for a while. It is resource greedy and the message retention was/is a mess.

Honestly, I don’t see how my folks will ever switch. WhatsApp and Signal are conceptually much easier to grasp and use.

Currently I’m glad, whenever somebody switches to signal (and I choose to fight one battle at a time).

  • Varusteleka actually started as a surplus store and is now producing their own brands (Sämär/ Sämär TST). They have the same manufacturing as Savotta, which is top notch.

  • Nah.. they realized, that nobody is buying their military stuff because of restrictions.

  • A late realization.

  • Take a look at the US Army ECWS layering concept. Layer 7 is a winter insulation layer with primaloft.

Surplus does often just mean lowest bidder, but you can find some civilian brands like Helikon-Tex (Poland). They take an adapt (and improve) on gear.

The Dutch military used an insulation jacket made by Snugpak. When it comes to real good stuff, I would always recommend Snugpak and Carinthia 🤑(especially the LIG/MIG/HIG or ECIG series). The later is just superb (rated for -30˚C)

  • I'm also pro-FOSS and pro-don't-your-dare-manipulating-my-social-media-for-commercial-or-political-reasons :-)

    Catchy, I know.

  • Both issues are tightly coupled. There is no business model/value in a truly federated platform that doesn't rely on algorithms. Try to sell ads to your customers, they will always prefer other platforms with proper targeting.

So why would a private company use a protocol and architecture, that cannot be monetized properly?

  • Bluesky is sort of federated while having a centralized content moderation. Saying it is federated is basically like saying a napkin can be used as trousers. It will cover some parts, but isn't the real deal.

The substantial difference is that mastodon is really federated, and decentralized, thereby moderated at different instances and levels (by server federation and defederation as well as local moderation). Also, really important, there is no algorithm feeding you content a platform owner considers worth emphasizing.

  • To address the title of the article: No. Not suddenly. Ages ago.

  • I'm just cautious, if people try to brand an idea. Don't get me wrong: they need to be financed and given a benefit of a doubt. But I'm used to finance projects (NGOs, servers ...) via donations and have a spending report.
