Was there ever a time where you were incredibly lucky?

I was in the upstairs bathroom at my parents' place which had a skylight you could open. I did, and half of a hornet's nest fell from it. I slammed the window shut as quick as I could and then looked down. The other half was floating in the toilet with the hornets momentarily dazed. I closed the lid and flushed. When I peeked under the lid, it was gone.
This is like a condensed movie! Jump scare, epic battle, moments of stark terror, problem resolved - or was it? Clearly open for a sequel. And also a better love story than Twilight!
Clearly open for a sequel.
Hmm…now that I think of it, there's a tenant renting the upstairs these days. I hope someone told her about the hornets?
"Dodge this."
You did that.
I went to work for a company in an entry-level, unskilled position. That company had a mentality of hiring from within and training for positions rather than hiring qualified external candidates. Because of that company, I managed to develop a career and am currently making over 6 times what I was earning when I started there 12 years ago. I'm no longer at the same company, but I am incredibly grateful for how lucky I was for things to fall into place the way they did.
That's brains and hard work. Lemmy does not accept that as a way to move forward. Next time try to dig on capitalism or nepotism or some other -ism. No one gets ahead by hard work. No one.
Put the fries in the bag
My wife cheated on me. That was lucky because, when her family found out, she was humiliated, and didn't demand that I sell the house to give her half, she just walked away. Had she not cheated, and just divorced me, I likely would have been forced to sell the house at the bottom of the market. We would have each gotten less than $10,000.
Now, the mortgage is nearly paid off, and the house is worth three times what it was when we divorced.
Nice! I'm a guy who also kept the house. It's a small Habitat for Humanity place, but its got a big yard and I'm on the edge of town.
Ex is living in rent-to-own shack in bumfuck Arkansas with the kids. Literally a one stoplight town. At least the kids get to live here 1/4 of the year.
When I was 16 or so a blade broke off the ceiling fan in my bedroom and landed directly on my pillow. I had just woken up and was in the shower when it happened and came back to find it like that. If I'd slept in just a few minutes I would've taken that fan blade right to my head.
Hah! Reminds me of having moved out of dad's basement. 6-months later the wall caved in on my bed, couple of tons of concrete. SPLAT.
Oh shit, that must've felt weird to see
Being born a cis white male in the USA. It's not right, but it was lucky.
I'll come back with an answer more in line with the intent of the question if I see this again later.
Seriously, my life is (unfairly) so much easier than it could have been. That's not lost on me. Let's change that.
I'd say the USA part puts you somewhere closer to the middle of the luck spectrum these days..
Dad told me this in the early 90s. Listen: "This might sound racist, but you were damned lucky to be born a young, white, American male in the late 20th century."
He was right. Double lucky, because mom would have aborted my happy ass if it had been legal in 1971. And now here I am to pester all y'all with my bullshit opinions!
Exactly my thinking. Could have been born and raised in much worse circumstances, considering everything going on in the world.
My ex was having a girls night with some friends and accidentally butt dialled me while she was having sex with her ex, I could hear them clearly but she had no idea. She came home acting like everything was normal, I would never have known if it weren't for the butt dial, dodged a bullet
That will teach her ass.
Unfortunately it’ll probably teach her the wrong lesson.
Oh god. Not as bad, but my ex-wife butt dialed me from the operating theater.
"Yeah, he wants to have kids. LOL, fuck all that!"
Yeah, I heard that.
I met one of my now closest friends at the end of a Halloween party just as things were shutting down and everyone was leaving.
As she was walking by, she randomly announced that she was going to see a band next week. One that I had already bought tickets for. We talked briefly and exchanged numbers. We saw the band together and hung out a few more times but I think after the third time we hung out, we knew we were best friends.
We both weren't even supposed to go to that Halloween party. Both of us had very different plans and somehow ended up at the party as something to do. The timing for us to meet was just so tiny and it doesn't even feel real sometimes.
Nice! Met my best friend laying on my couch reading one of my books. Fuck is this guy?! One of my loser roommates friends?
"Dragonlance is badass!"
"You're on the first book of the second trilogy. Here, read Dragons of Autumn Twilight before you ruin the plot."

Moments after unloading a patient from my ambulance, a jeep slammed into the rear end. It was blamed on "solar glare".
My partner, myself, and our patient probably would've been killed.
I was working on my car and had one of the springs out tightened down with a spring compressor. I stupidly had it stood upright with my face over it. I moved out of the way momentarily and the spring compressor broke, launching the spring like four stories into the sky landing in a field next to us. Don’t know what that would’ve done to me if it hit me in the face.
I’m going to go with “nothing good.”
Death or serious injury certainly, those SOBs can punch through a roof and have more to go afterwards
I think it probably would have un-lifed you
maybe don't watch that, jihadi blowing his skull off staring down a rifle, no blood and guts, but still...
Found a nice apartment for a fair price in one of the best parts of town two years ago. Two other persons were interested. One didn't show up, the other never contacted the landlord after the viewing.
Usually people have to apply for dozens of apartments in my city until they are lucky, this was the second one I applied to.
Pure luck? No, thats a friend of mine. All my luck is heavily slanted by skill. I worked for all of the shit I have.
Love him like a brother, but the fucker falls by sheer chance into the craziest situations.
Looking to buy a condo or a house. Ends up getting a 50% off steal of a price for a divorcing couple on a huge lot. 5 years later the fucker is wanting to move. Within a month, finds a bigger house right in the city that is walkable to his work. That family was helping the seller of the house they were buying find a large lot that could fit two houses. By chance, the house he had fit the bill. The three of them traded properties.
Pure luck? No, thats a friend of mine. All my luck is heavily slanted by skill. I worked for all of the shit I have.
It's beyond annoying to have someone attribute skill/talent for luck. Those are two different things, yes, but still.
Like I've been in a bunch of crashes where I went flying several meters into the air while spinning. Barely broke a rib. Never hit my head. Lucky? Could say that. Ooooor the judo courses I took in my formative years at like 7-9 in which we literally practiced falling are paying off now that I'm a reckless drunk.
Also when you know something and someone's like "how'd you guess that?". I fucking didn't. I analysed and came up with an answer.
Reno: I put a dollar into a penny slot, pressed two buttons, won $1700, and immediately cashed out.
I found $360 in the street in Boston one time when I was 12 years old or so.
Hey, that's mine! Corner of Congress & Hanover... I drew lipstick on one of the $20s.
Venmo my cash, buddy!
6 years ago, I had a hard time sleeping and felt "weird", so I thought my blood sugar was low. I picked up my glucometer and on the way to the living room, I dropped it 3 or 4 times. I'm fairly clumsy and I was tired, so I didn't think much of it.
When I got to the living room and tested, my sugar was normal and I said "Well, it's not low blood sugar" out loud to myself and heard the awful slurring. I knew it was a stroke. In the 2 minutes it took me to stumble out of the bedroom, I had progressed to having to hold myself up as I went back to the bedroom to have my wife call 911. Before the paramedics got there, I was almost completely paralyzed on my right side. In the ambulance, I was paralyzed on that side.
Luckily, the hospital nearest me is known for its great stroke response and had a portable CT scanner so they could rule out a hemorrhagic stroke, which meant they could give me the clot-buster drug, TPA. I walked out of the hospital 2 1/2 days later at about 95% of where I was before the stroke. My deficits are very minor and if you didn't know, you'd never think I was a stroke survivor.
My wife cheated on me and I met a wonderful woman who treats me so well..
I count my ex leaving me as one of the highlights of my life. She took the kids as well, but after a few years of fucking me, the judge handed her her ass on a silver platter. Kids are here now!
And my new wife? Gods what a fantasy woman, tell her that all the time. I'm stupid lucky.
Exploring a city drain, and I leapt over a puddle, and mid-air I kinda saw something and ducked my head sideways. Turned out I'd leapt directly into a 30cm piece of sharp, rusty reinforcing rod that was hanging out of the ceiling and bent directly toward my eyes. I don't really know how I avoided it, but if I hadn't, it may well have been an instant involuntary lobotomy..
I was hired by someone, but when I showed up for my “first day”, they denied ever offering me the position. Of course, I was pissed, but I consider this “luck” because I’m sure that working for someone who pulls shit like that would have been awful.
The last time I was out of weed and wasn't gonna have money to get more for at least a week, I found an unopened disposable THC vape in the bushes where I usually smoke cigarettes near my car in the parking lot of my apartment building. It wasn't something I lost because I don't get disposables, but it was perfect lucky timing.
Also the last time I was in Tahoe, I had $200 left in my pocket as I was leaving the hotel/casino I was staying at, but that night I dreamt I bet it all on red on roulette and won. So, knowing dreams are usually backwards, I put the $200 on black, and won. That's how I bought my Nintendo Switch.
I was quite lucky finding cash on the ground some time ago. I found 50 euro bill two times, 20 one time 10 another one and i think 5 one or two times.
Oh thank goodness! I was looking for those!
When I was a baby I started choking while inside a shop. we were on holiday abroad and it was sheer luck that a doctor was in the shop and he saved my life
Nurse dosed me with penicillin when I was 5 (1976).
Parents, "We don't know if he's allergic!"
Nurse: "Nonsense."
Thank god I was already in the ER.
yikes. sorry that happened to you, glad you're ok!!!
Found out the lower control arm on my car was barely held on with one bolt that was so loose it rattled while I drove. Had my transmission replaced and they didn't totally button up the sub-frame after they were done. I was one hard turn away from finding out what happens when only one tire goes horizontal at highway speeds for about 3 months
Growing up, my mother was a opioid/heroin addict. My dad had divorced her, but she had joint custody and my brother and I would go visit on the weekend. There was one night where she was going to drive us to get fast food. I was 8 years old at the time. She had taken pills right before the drive and nodded off on a busy, fast moving main road. We crossed over the yellow lines and I unbuckled my seatbelt to try to get her to wake up as a tractor trailer was coming at us. We veered off the road and hit a telephone pole, missing that truck by like two seconds
Heysus. And to think my ex tried to keep my kids away from me.
I got run over by a car some ten years ago. Despite the windshield being smashed in, i didn't get any injury except the big bloody wound on my head and some scratches around my body. Had i hit the frame instead of the windshield i would have probably had my skull fractured.
Gf and I were looking for a part at the junkyard (1989). Dozens of cars with a bloody circle in the windshield.
Wear your seat belt kids!
Lots of times. I had a police officer draw a gun on me and I didn't get shot so that's a big one. I once won a roomba in a company raffle. In a D&D campaign my character got reincarnated and I got the 1/100 roll to be the same species as I started. Oh, and here's an astronomical one, I met my fiancée through a random hookup post on the other site. We talked all night but their medication at the time gave them memory issues and they forgot me the next day. Being patient and recapping our interaction from the night before may have been the most momentous decision of my life. All predicated on the luck of seeing the post at the right time and actually getting a reply on a hookup post DM
Not sure that counts as luck lol but congrats!
I won some Tupperware at bingo in the church basement when I was nine years old.
But don't you wish you could still feel as excited now as you did as a 9 year old? :)
Ok you guys are pushing it
Yes, the first half of my professional career. I went from nothing to working at the same level with the people on top of the system.
Which I all then promptly lost and now I work a shit job for shit money. One of many reasons I'm socialist leaning these days.
Kinda speaks to the lie of the meritocracy when your merit remains even or grows, and the system can't decide whether you should be on the top or bottom
When I was 17 I was driving my mom's car. Suddenly the neighborhood seemed very dark so I stopped. I was sitting on a boat ramp into the Gulf of Mexico.
One night in college I was driving down a street that runs parallel to railroad tracks and then jogs to cross them. As I crossed I glanced over to see a train right outside my passenger door.
I don't know how I got lucky enough to find my husband.
I have a double luck story.
A near fatal car accident just a few months ago. Guy ran a red light at close to 100mph. They were racing someone. I was turning onto the highway and they came within a literal inch of slamming into me. While swerving out of the way, they proceeded to fishtail across several lanes, cross back in front of me, head off the highway down into a ditch, graze a tree, get catapulted about 20 feet in the air coming out of the ditch and then miss about 8 trees while sliding across 50 yards of field stopping within a foot of slamming front first into another tree. Dude walked out of the car like nothing happened, not a scratch.
If I had been just 1 second earlier to the intersection, he would have slammed into me with almost a 100% likelihood of them dying and myself close to it.
In 2017 my mom and I took a week long trip to Iceland. It was amazing, 10/10, will go again.
However, we went on this hike up into the mountains to find this hot spring river. About halfway there I see this outcropping from the trail that overlooks the gully below. I hand my mom my phone and tell her I'm going to walk out there and to snap a picture of me. So I head out there and its cool. Not narrow or seemingly dangerous in anyway.
As I'm standing out there, a wind kicks up out of nowhere. Picks me up off the trail, feet and all. Like, I was literally weightless. It was just for a few seconds, only a few cm off the ground, but I knew it would carry me over the edge and into the gully below, and I couldn't do anything.
Instead, it set me back on my feet and was gone as soon as it came. I walked back to my mom and thanked her and said nothing about what just happened, I didn't want to scare her. But I stuck to the main trail after that.
I can't really explain how unnerving it is to be weightless like that on earth, where gravity is king. I became immediately helpless. If that wind had lasted longer, I could have easily been flung over the edge without being able to do anything about it.
I nearly died from electrocution when I was very young. Luckily my brother noticed that I was being shocked, he pulled me and he got a little bit of shock too while doing that, somehow we managed to detach ourselves from the leak and survived.
And if you were really lucky you were able to hide or conceal all the evidence of what you were doing to get into that state without your parents finding out. Brothers tell no tales.
I was very young at that time, it wasn't like I intentionally got myself in trouble.
My parents were very understanding. There was no need to hide anything.
got in trouble once for swearing in school. the teacher made me tell my parents i'd have detention the next day. i didn't tell my parents, didn't know how i'd get myself out of this pickle, woke up the next day to a few inches of snow on the ground (in march, in north carolina) and school was cancelled. teacher never brought it up, and apart from remembering it vividly, never suffered any consequences.
oh, and another time when i had just gotten my license and someone almost clipped into my front bumper on the interstate so i jerked the wheel and ended up doing almost a 540 at 70mph in 3 lanes of traffic. i jerked the wheel left like a dumbass to avoid getting hit, started to spin, jerked the wheel back to the right (continuing the dumbass trend), did a rotation and a quarter. didn't hit anything and landed facing the correct direction on the shoulder. what really surprised me was how little i actually had to jerk the wheel to make it lose traction.
Yes.
Im happy for you<3
Thanks! Good chance I'd be unalive if it didn't happen when it did.
I feel like I just have an "everything will work out" general luck, but I've definitely lost more games of chance than I've won.
It's a daily occurrence to me at this point because I'm still alive
With my now Partner. I almost scrolled past them online. And almost didnt massage them.
Now i saved them from homelessness and starvation. After i took tjem in and for the first time in their life got good nutritional food, they got into puberty and growthspurt at age 19 and 20.
Uh .. wtf
No
I’m lucky all the time. Praise Tymora!
