Yes it's miserable, and I'm not sure if I'm doing anything at all, but turning away seems worse.
- Implying Lemmy is the best/only place to get political news. :/

- I don't think it's right to assume that people who block political online content are doing nothing. Hell, I think it's more likely that people who consume a lot of political content feel that they're doing something when they aren't.
- Doomscrolling can decrease the motivation to act, contribute to anxiety and analysis paralysis.
  Banning communities can be helpful to avoid those that fuel doomscrolling rather than action.
- I tried. Prior to the election i was doing everything possible to change peoples minds. To get people together and ready for what needed to be done. Back then I was "overreacting"
  Now that trump is in office we no longer have a winning strategy. People suddenly want to pretend like they care when it's all virtue signalling. Just like climate change, now that its too late to do anything, its ok to acknowledge that it exists.
  
  The winning strategy has always been worker organizing, and it certainly isn't too late to mitigate the damage of Climate Change. Handcuffing yourself because we have no way of acting within the rules set out by the system is the exact type of nihilism the system is designed to instill, even Climate Doomerism is a tool of the oil barons to demoralize activists and organizers. We can change, and it takes organizing and overthrow of the present state of things, not playing a game created by the House to only ever allow them to win.

The people in this thread acting like you need to be tuned in to everything all the time with no filter baffle me. You can block all politics on Lemmy and get your political news elsewhere. People are more than entitled to cultivate the spaces they inhabit and use.

Please be patient with us while we struggle with trying to stop a burgeoning dictatorship.
- For people outside the US, it has been a brutal dictatorship for a long time. The people whos countries you destroy certainly don't get a vote

- In the defence of some of us, like myself for instance, I live in a country where we can do literally jack shit to affect American political bullcrap, because it's nowhere near America. I'm pretty sure Europeans are excused from having to stay up to date every moment, unless we can force the rest of the world to be continuously in the loop about... idk, whatever crap Geert Wilders is up to right now...

- I think a strong understanding of Marxism helps seed the revolutionary optimism that makes watching the news more bearable than for liberals who see the world as a scary swirl of chaos and no way out. Lenin says it well:

  Thing is, a lot of information about the current state of political affairs is blasting through all channels. Some people just want to use Lemmy to shitpost, hang out in CasualConversation, or look a funnies from Stamets.
  I think that's a fair use case, and doesn't necessarily mean someone who does this is sticking their head in the sand about the current political order going to shit.

Ignoring the world definitely makes you good global citizens and not problems to work around. Good job. Way to go.

You could also choose an instance like programming.dev that hides political communities by default
- I didn't even realise my instance did this (I didn't do research)
  But if this is it minimised, I don't want to see the full amount

I don't subscribe to political communities at all. If I want to see politics I switch to the All tab. Most of the time I go through Subscribed or Local though.

How would you even do this? It would take forever. Is there like a blocklist you can import?
- If you look at my comment history, you'll see how, on the boost app at least, to mute keywords and phrases, as well as a list that I use.
  To save a click through my history: settings > filters and block > filter words

Can we start a thread with like blocking words, but yes blocking makes Lemmy the best
