BONTO! was sooo good. Like it really improved the Slorpiness.
No way! BONTO! was just the enshitfication of Slorp by a private equity firm.
<unwarranted rage No way, BONTO! sucked. You couldn't even Slorp your entire friends list anymore, and they added all of those BONTOgrams for no reason. We disagree on a topic, so I despise you now and your entire genetic line. </rage
But you should really try NeWSlarP, a FLOSS fork of Slorp by the original developer that brings back both SlorpTokens and Schlarpmänner!
unwarranted rage No way...
... </rage
This is the wildest syntax I've ever seen! At first, I thought it was unparsable nonsense. Then I realized that your tags are capital-letter-terminated. Is this from a language I don't know or have you unwittingly cooked up a piece of a cursed programming language? If the latter, I propose Slorp as its name.
Are we just turning into the bug aliens from Rick and Morty?
Your end tag for rage is the wrong way and I do hate you and your entire genetic line now
I prefer Slurm, myself.
You jest but...
Enshittification never sleeps, stealing all ideas that it can possibly get away with!

WTF is even the point of the email if there's NO USEFUL INFORMATION IN IT?!
It's annoying, but from a data security point of view it makes sense, personal information like that is more secure behind the login on their website than in an e-mail in plain text.
I'm currently locked out of my electricity provider's payment site. They kept asking me if my name was on the account when I logged in. I would click yes and then it'd ask for a bunch more information. I managed to get around it and get to bill pay. Eventually they locked me out. Now they want me to call them so they can get more data out of me to sell to data brokers, and on principle, I'm not about that, so I just pay by phone like a boomer with my paper bill now.
Of course not, can't let the consumers keep an easy paper trail of their bills. That would mean we would be caught on mischarges!
But the website will only show how much you used, if you want to see how much that costs, you have to use our app, which for some reason requires location access, storage access and call access...
Oh, not the total owed, but the actual usage graphs. Yeah I only get an annual email containing a recap pretty much at years end for a few services. Otherwise it's off to the shitty website.
Otherwise it's off to the shitty website.
I've been promised that AI will fix all the shitty websites, soon.
Information channels arent for communication.
They're for advertising, provocation, and corporate shibboleths of consent.
Maybe get on board with the 20th century, grandma.
The same could be said for anything, really.

I remember when phones used to be good.
Telemarketers have been around for a long, long time (Wikipedia claim "...the practice of contacting potential customers by telephone originated in the late 19th century.").
I personally recall a lot more telemarketing in the 90s, though I was a kid and just passed the phone to mom or dad. But that was also a time when caller ID was a luxury, and not everyone had answering machines.
The last time I had a landline was 16 years ago when my wife briefly had a home office. Her employer required the landline as part of the home office setup (they paid for it).
We got spammed by robocallers every 5-10 minutes all day long and half the night. It was so bad that my wife never knew when a work call was coming in and had to let every call go to voicemail.
We didn't unplug the phone just turned the answering machine to silent. We still got calls on a supposedly disconnected number.

I legit got an e-mail from Facebook telling me that I should join Facebook because “no one uses e-mail anymore”. Ummmm…..well someone must be still using e-mail and No.
You should have sent a reply email saying 'I know!'
I actually love email. While yes, this post is accurate, email is the most filterable communication system that I have. Since I have my own email-server, and I know how procmail rules work, I can tightly control who is allowed to contact me, and what folders their messages go into. It also has great crowd-sourcing of known spammers, that I can pull from to help me filter out spammy IP addresses.
Every other message system only has a "report spam" button, that is dependent on the service admins, and doesn't actually stop people from sending me annoying junk-mail.
Yeah, it's also one of the few remaining interoperable ways of communicating.
If your friend who used to use gmail is now using hotmail, you don't have to use a new app to communicate with that friend, you just update their email address and nothing else changes. If you used to be on gmail and you now want to run your own mail server you should check into a mental health clinic, but once you get out, you just tell your friends your new email address and for them nothing else changes. In fact, you can set gmail to forward emails, so any friends who forget will still communicate with you without difficulty.
If you used to be on gmail and you now want to run your own mail server you should check into a mental health clinic.
No freaking kidding. I just wanted to set up an address to like, send me server notifications and stuff. Not worth the hassle!
An ever-present torrential maelstrom of email bot spam has spawned so many hoops and regulatory checks it made this process not worth it. And that's aside from just getting and keeping it running!
Actually no, I don't remember when email was ever useful and I do remember dial-up internet 😂
It used to be chain emails "Send this to 10 other people or YOU'LL DIE" and people forwarding other people's bad picture slideshows and even worse uplifting inspiring cards without looking at them, and now it's automated slop.
Those meme email chains were annoying at the time, but kinda endearing to look back on in retrospect.
I kept getting added onto ones my mum and dad were getting from a bunch of their friends that had people's random corporate/work email addresses included and stuff.....
It was a simpler time, when boomers hadn't discovered social media yet, and were making their own fun without Facebook and without the algorithm.
If someone offered me a chance to magic social media away like it never happened, and the price I had to pay was unfunny memes spamming my inbox, it's a price I'd pay gladly.
For me the worst was the slideshow fad... So many people were making some and constantly sending them to ALL their contacts and forwarding those of other people making them and you kept receiving some of people who knew someone who knew someone you knew because of the forwarding... Since the last step came from people you knew, you couldn't just block them, and if you didn't answer every once in a while it was terribly rude... Also those butt ugly sparkling greeting cards 😬
Now spam is so common that it's a perfect excuse, I just warn people that I don't read email so don't bother sending them 😂
But I agree on principle, the annoyances used to come from people who were over-enthusiastic over new technology like email, photo editing and such, and wanted to share it with everyone (willing or no). Or people who were having fun with chain emails (I might possibly have started a few on my school local network so I do understand... but to be fair no one used that network and its email system for anything else but email chains 😂 ). Now it's all automated slop.
Those meme email chains were annoying at the time, but kinda endearing to look back on in retrospect.
I still cringe at the memory of the one time I forwarded one -- it was something about Bill Gates, but I can't remember the details. Anyway, my uncle replied back to me with something wholesome like
Nice to hear from you [mad_lentil], although I doubt this offer is genuine, you never know! Maybe we'll all be rich this time next year. Say hi to your mom and dad for me, thanks.
It had never occurred to me that someone would lie on the internet rofffflllll. I was SO humiliated.
"Send this to 10 other people or YOU'LL DIE"
And a lot of "I'm not superstitious BUT..." LOL
I almost miss how stupidly innocent the internet felt with that nutty stuff back then. Most chain letters were merely annoying social experiments rather than ultra nefarious like social media has become.
(Edit: lol just noticed a very similar take a few posts above me.)
"Flashing headlights at cars is a gang initiation to help them pick who to murder! Pass this along because it's better safe than sorry!"
"Opening the wrong email might give you the Life is Beautiful virus that says 'your life is no longer beautiful' and wipes your hard drive! Tell everyone you know!"
(Ah, when an erased hard drive was the scariest malware one could think of...)
"Snd ths 2 15 ppl and push Alt+F4 and teh naem of ur crush will appear. (Zomgwtfbbq it rly works!!)"
"I'm a missionary in South Afrimericasia and I wanted to send this prayer chain around the entire world to prove something wholesome and also send money plz lol. Look, Sarah passed it on and her life turned around! The divine holy power of email!"
I had to spend a lot of time directing people I knew to a now-defunct site called "BreakTheChain" , and also Snopes. Usually the same people. Every time.
And sometimes they'd tell me "Well I forward it to you because you can tell me if it's true or not." I don't miss that. Lmao
OMG I had forgotten the prayer chains from southwhatever missionaries 🤣 🤣 🤣

Get a marketing email from them within 24 hours anyway.
I've seen quite a few sites that require you to tick the box to not receive marketing, maybe it's that
I once considered buying a product. Got as far as putting my contact and address in (no account).
I've changed my mind last minute, and they've been badgering me every since, clearly having recorded my details for marketing purposes before I ever pressed a single button.
This is in the EU too, I should rat on their ass
They just blatantly ignore your preferences because they know there will be no consequences.
The one thing that generally works well in Canada at least is that they must provide a way to unsubscribe at the bottom of the email. The complaint process is relatively simple and the fines for violations are steep.
Wish.com used to lock your account if you unsubscribed from their daily spam emails.
You don' hate email; you hate capitalism.
Yeah, use disposable mail adresses for registering
I love how almost every societal complaint or struggle can be traced back to the idea that there are a small number of people trying to take the money from a large number of other people for as unfair of an exchange as physically possible.
Don't forget

In the late 90s there was a women's magazine called Bust, and for some reason they'd also let you have a bust dot com email account if you wanted. You could email me at cleavage@bust.com, and those were creative fun days of the Internet.
ETA: it still exists as a quarterly internet magazine but it is NOTHING like it was, it was a great magazine.
I do miss BONTO! though. Not gonna lie.
The local school does this where you need an app to view their daily posts. You also get an preview sent to your email with the first 100 words or so and an link to their app.
Does their system know how to email to hundreds of users? Yes.
Could their messages be transmitted via text? Yes.
Could their messages be posted on a simple WordPress blog? Also yes.
Can I view their full messages on any platform independent device or web browser? No.
Hint: it's a private message from BONTO!-Bot offering you BONTO+! Premium Supreme! (It's BONTO! with less ads)
Nextdoor. Freaking nextdoor is the absolute worst. I only have it because it's a decent "local Intel" source because nobody talks to (or knows) each other in suburbia anymore.
But it shows you like the first 10 words of a post, and just opening the website on a phone practically locks the whole page with a "GeT tHe ApP!" Pop-up.
Know what? Yeah I should dump it. Save my mental health. Lol

I actually love email. It's great that we have a standard and open protocol for sending and receving virtual mail. Without email we would be now probably using some closed-source proprierary and not interoperable solution witch locks you in. I'm glad it didn't happen.
I will fight anyone who disagrees with the fact that email is the best protocol ever invented. It is perfect. Arbitrary text, file attachments, e2ee with gpg. It has zero downsides for most things. It's just been destroyed by corpos :/
What about ip over avian carriers? I think it's better 😅
But yes. Email is great. :3
This memey post isn't about Email as a concept, it's about the state of commercial communication companies and the way we access having email.
Don't worry. I get it. :3 I'm just adding another perspective to the discussion.
I as well like email, it just has to be managed. Then you threw in the alternative involved a solution with a witch locking me in, and I'm intrigued to know more.
I have a mail account I only use for humans and each mail is a delightful surprise 😁
Hello fellow human, can I have that address then
I kinda want to send it to you but I may generate a new one just to be able to delete it in case you start subscribing me to newsletters ;))
Do you really want it ?
I use a different email alias for every service I subscribe to, and my "for humans" email is very different from my subscribe aliases.
Unfortunately, many humans in my life say "oh, merc would like this, I'll just enter his email address on this web form". So, I still get a lot of spam to my "only for humans" email address.
Oh even if it sounds very annoying, it seems like you have people that cherish you ;)
Rabid anthropocentrism is not a good look.
Slorp was so much better before they changed their name to Bonto. Only young people prefer Bonto, and they're idiots.
Bonto killed Slorp, Bonto is the only reason it shutdown.
Are you being serious? Slorp sucked. I think that's why they chose the name... because it sounds like sucking.
Boomer comment!
What the hell is BONTO! I don't remember making an account on BONTO! Why do I have a BONTO! account is someone impersonating me WAS MY EMAIL HACKED??? Oh wait it's just a rebrand of that one website that forced me to create an account 10 years ago.
They forgot the newsletters you get twice a day* (*thrice if you opted out of newsletters) and the deluge of spam when everyone at Bonto sold your email address while they were going out of business.
Remember when mail was useful? When you opened the letter box hoping to see a letter from a friend who moved to a different city?
Now mail is just like email. Or to put it differently, email became like it's physical predecessor.
We have a law in German that you can opt out of advertisement on the mail by putting a sticker on to your mailbox that states "No Advertising". Companies have to respect it or will be fined.
I wish there was a "No advertisement please" sticker for my inbox too, but a junk filter will have to do.
You missed the one about the data breach that they are still investigating, but subtly hint that your full contact details, credit card, social security number, health status, sexual orientation, bank account, and passwords were sold on the dark web.
Mail is made so much better when using an alias system like SImpleLogin from Proton. Just create a new mail for everything (except Atlassian the idiots) and when they start doing bullshit you can terminate the email.
Enabling OTP code 2FA will also reduce the verification emails
I wish you could separate the automated notification system emails from the living, breathing human sitting down to write you a message emails. Also, automated emails calling you by your name ("Hi ${name}!") should be banned.
Oh yes. If any of my friends or colleagues ever emails me "Hi (name)!" they're going to be very confused, because I habitually block all incoming e-mail that starts that way.
Sometimes I see things like this and relate a little. Then I see the comments and wonder why more people don't have two emails.
One for random accounts/signup and one for serious accounts and human communication.
Everyone should have a separate one for their finances, that they dont give out to anyone except banks and brokerages.
Having three tiers is recommended(private-financial/governmental, private-personal/important-accounts, and "public" accounts), but most people stick to one. Which is why I usuaully recommend two, as a starting point for people not accustomed to multiples, forwarding, filtering, etc.
I don't think sensitive information like finances should be in the email inbox ever. I don't. I login to the bank itself with BankID, similar to Freja eid.
I have a dozen email accounts, that way all the emails I don't read (which is ALL OF THEM) are neatly separated in different inboxes.
[quick look at my gmail]... I currently have 781 unread messages in my inbox.
Rookie numbers.
0 here 🥳
And only 3 messages in spam but those are forwards from my gmail acct for notifications from google services. Can't be bothered to check if it's possible to use custom email instead because I should probably just stop using google altogether.
Can anyone tell me how one of the richest companies on Earth doesn't have a "New Label" feature in their app? How? HOW?!?!?!??!
Every month or so I'll just do a "from: (name of bulk sender)" search, tick the "select all" box, and wipe huge chunks of it out hahaha.
Not a fan of BONTO!’s forced arbitration clause though.
Zombo’s never left me 🫂
Well, Zombo is FOSS!
Come to ZOMBO DOT COM
It's still there!
You don't hate email; you hate BAD email. Probably broadcast junk.
GOOD email is private Bank statements over a provably secure e2e transport marked clearly for filters (with a JSON section for import automatically; am I right?). It's "here is a new copy of the plans." It's "Dear Aunt Helen."
Every now and then, although I know and support the alternate position for reasons I think have been shown as obvious, repeatedly, I sometimes think a 1¢ postage for unsolicited mail - okay, make it a buck - would be okay... IFF that could be figured so the recipient would be assured of getting half. Make it cost; make it pay.
No no, hear me out. Unpaid transit charges for unsolicited bulk email by the person owning the domain is now inter-region or international wire fraud, and the people making a habit of it will build up enough that they'll warrant action. Ergo, make it financial and maybe we'll see cops raiding scam shops.
That's the dream anyway....
The US was actually headed this way, starting with spam phone centers... Then the head of the FCC was replaced.
Could be a coincidence. Could be open naked class warfare by billionaires against the rest of us. Hard to say which, for sure.
This sounds amazing. Although I feel like they'd just pull the cruise ship thing and register their "business" elsewhere.
But hey it'd be a great step! Remember when everyone was SO hopeful for the "National Do Not Call Registry"? Hahahaha...
I believe emails should not be used. There are or should be better alternatives. Account creation should be handled by passkeys.
Email is legacy. Insecure and content is just a webpage...
how will they send ads?
I don't want to fall for ads. I use price comparison webpages and can there monitor for specific items and priceranges.
Alternative you can often view their ad campaign on their website and in PDF format.
There are special smartphone apps that just collect ADs. Basically the provider put their PDF there. Just subscribe there to what you want.
Some people even prefer the paper version.
By beaming them straight into your brain chip, silly!
What is your alternative idea that isn't just improved email?
My block chain powered messaging solution. Sign up with your email! Now with AI!
Carrier pigeons. At least you get a bird to pet when receiving spam.
In my country we have something called BankID. BankID, it's Sweden's leading electronic identification system, widely used for banking, e-government services, and secure logins. So I use it to login to the bank, check my taxes, hospital status, bookings etc. Basically the message itself is already on their website and never leaves them.
Subscriptions? We have RSS.
Buying something? Login to the website and see your order.
Delivery of something you bought and want to see when the packet arrives? You have an smartphone app for that. Like login to company app and view. You even get push notifications.
And for those people who actually get a message from a person instead of a company. You have chat, like Microsoft Teams, Slack, Discord etc. You even can have voice and video conference with the other person. Chat is instant messaging and is not slow compared to email.
Account registration? Make use of OpenID. Or even better passkeys.
Bonus: In my country we have Kivra - government post. Any company can get it and send the normal letter in a digital format - basically the none printed version of the letter so a PDF.
I'm so happy this site is still running.
It's an enduring artifact of when the Internet was still fun.
Wtf is this lol
Its whatever you want it to be. The only limit is yourself.
Email is the original Fediverse.
"BONTO is selling your personal info to Google! Click this non-working link to opt out!"
I love email, recently started subscribing to artists' and illustrators' (non-substack) newsletters and it's a great way to stay informed if they otherwise only have fascist social media accounts. The newsletters somehow also feel more personal than meny social media posts.
I understand the struggle. I do. I still have an "Under construction" page on the domain I bought like a decade ago because I want a decent artist portfolio site and Wordpress is not the super easy dream they all claimed so I've nuked it like a dozen times. (And tried Grav, and Hugo, and...)
But seriously WHY do so many great artists like, even ones who could afford hosting a dedicated page, ONLY have an Instagram?! (And now a TikTok ugh). One AI-decided account ban or rebrand or algorithm change or whatever and their entire portfolio and audience are just gone.
It's really sad that there aren't more non-developer targeted FOSS projects for just getting a halfway decent page going. All those sites like Wix or Square charge a ridiculous amount and still give you a bloated mess that doesn't function unless people allow tons of chonky JavaScript.
/rant lol...
Photobucket is almost as bad as those extended car warranty companies.
Oh man what ever happened to photo bucket
After it killed the links to huge swaths of internet pictures? Good question...
Now it's IMGUR's turn to break all the links lol.
That why you should use multiple email accounts. One address for friends n family, one for spam that includes all confirmations etc., one for work stuff, one for bills and utilities that you must not miss, etc. It takes a little bit of effort to keep track of the multiple inboxes but it's better than having all your emails go to the same place
Most of my e-mails are the automated system for the hospital network I have most of my doctors through. I don't really have many accounts with things though, and usually when I get something from one it is because I logged in on a device I hadn't previously, or changed some information, or ordered something. That and the video call meeting stuff with a couple doctors. Meh.
My email is pretty clean. I still have my AOL email that was my AIM account in like middle / high school. I give that out to any companies that want an email address, while my Gmail account stays nice and neat. The only thing is my wife will occasionally buy stuff in my name and give out my sacred Gmail account. I damn near filed divorce papers.
I wish my email were so focused. It's mostly boner pills and fake Geek Squad renewals.
Nicely worded. Summarize my inbox.
I hate AI Slop profile images.
I got an email the other day from Reddit about their privacy policy in the email account I made specifically for Lemmy and have not used AT ALL for Reddit. It is the only unexpected email I've ever had at this address and it made me wonder if someone else made a reddit account using my email. But then, it's not publicly visible on Lemmy, afaik. Is it somewhere?
Your email address is visible to pawb.social admins I guess.
I too got an email about policy change. What's weird is that I did not get such email on my main email, which is used for my reddit account, but I did get that email on another email that I mostly use to sign up on random sites. That email said it affects a reddit account by the name I never heard before and it was empty (zero posts/comments), created 2-3 years ago, so that was weird
Could be a mistype, if your mail is vaguely recognizable language. I know my "email neighbor" has gotten a fair share of my mistypes.
Email has a place. I always let my teams know that text, phone call, or IM / DM aren't professional ways to communicate.
The reason being is that it isn't externally travelable - you can't send it to the next recipient in a format that is accepted by most people.
Also I hate needing to check five or seven fucking messaging apps to get all of the info consolidated. Send a goddamned email with everything once the thought is finished.
What sort of team setting are you in that your whole team doesn't have a single IM messaging platform that everyone in your company has?
Email is also fantastically based for "getting it in writing" when you're getting abused / exploited at work.
Printing or downloading emails as evidence? Easy peasy.
Extracting message chains from some ridiculously long Slack/Discord/WhatsApp/whatever proprietary messenger app? Pulling teeth. Usually involves a ton of screenshotting.
When I worked at a public library I used to have people screenshotting ridiculously long Facebook messenger chains because their lawyer demanded it all be printed out...and sometimes they'd demand the printouts faxed.
(Usually divorce cases. Sad.)
Absolute insanity.
Why do you have "5 or 7" apps? Being able to communicate externally, with consistency, is the reason for email, that's it. If anyone sends me an email with a question or comment that isn't hyper specific I immediately tell them to go post in a relevant slack channel so others can search for the question/comment in the future.
Christ I'm old enough to have received the Canter and Siegal green card lottery email.

No, I don't like e-mails, they're all spam, I only have an account to register other accounts. Why can't we continue our chat here on Natziapp (formerly known as Chatter)? Yes, I know, it's full of nazis, and stuff, but if we convince him hard enough, he could change for the better.
I would mark it as spam at "slorp is now bonto" if not at "thank you for creating..."
I never knew when email was useful. It's all cold calls, or useless actions and full of anxiety experience. And in the middle of all that still have to be careful with spam and phishing. Some people say that is useful for quick messages, but then if in a thread with people during one day or two all the freaking messages are like "Hi Mark,.... Best Regards" bullshit, forcing me to go to the search engine trying to find a closing statement different than previous...
Really, email, my only wish is for it to die. And everyone just expects you to know how to use it, with those useless and weird Bcc and Cc and other weird magical keywords. Don't get me started on "email etiquette" when everybody does it differently and if you go to some mailing lists you are immediately bullied or dismissed just because you don't know the magical incantations they work with...
It's all bullshit and I deeply hate it in my soul. Truly a tech from the 60s.
