I told her not to message strangers on the internet yesterday. I feel she might be cheating on me.

- Funnily enough, I had never gotten one on my old account which was >4 years old on .ml - but after I made this one on my own instance, in less than a day, I finally got one.
  
  Serious question: are there reports of the Fediverse Chick on the Tankie Triad instances? Maybe you didn't get one because she just avoids them entirely?

- I expect the software to improve. The "fediverse chick" spam is the perfect opportunity to test countermeasures.
- DMs don't worry me that much, but botted content, upvotes and comments would kill the platform like any other.

  I'll admit, the thing that made me go from Kbin to Lemmy was seeing tons of spam on unmoderated places. (Not blaming the admin for not being able to manage the site in that particular case, they had more pressing issues.)

  this is why I'm ok staying small and never going mainstream, honestly I had hoped that for reddit pre 2010 but by mid 2010s it was already too far gone
- Perhaps a way to limit how fast new instances are able to post and tools to identify those causing spam
  
  That won't stop anyone. Just spin up 50 instances and let them sit for a while until they're not so new anymore.

- Given that she looks pretty much the same in multiple outfits across multiple pictures, I would assume that they are stolen from some 2000s online site
- The person and the background look too similar between photos for this to be AI. The person behind the scam probably searched the web, and stole this poor person's photos. Judging from the poor quality, I'd date it around ~2008

- Cause she has a Lemmy platinum account.
- Boost has not had an update since mid 2024. I think it's abandonware.
  
  I managed to clear it by going to the tab left of messages tab and clicking clear all.
  
  Switched to Voyager very recently and it's pretty sleek so far. Easy to navigate and sort.

- I'm on boost too. Hit the double checkmark icon, but while you're in the replies tab. Def some kind of bug.
  
  Had to do the same thing on connect with all her messages. Wouldn't let me delete them either. Very strange that it's a bug that affects multiple clients.

- I keep blocking it, but...
I am so happy the Fediverse chick wrote me a DM, which really means Lemmy is growing!
- It is showing that there's a lot of work to be done to deal with the spam issue. It's basically relying on every individual instance admin to moderate their stuff and defederate from other instances that drop the ball. If Lemmy gets big enough for spammers to really try to attack it, the admins will quickly get overwhelmed.
  
  This is from a Kbin/Mbin viewpoint, but from the very start a year or so ago spam was incredibly bad, usually porn. It was common to daily add more to the filter to see other postings. Then one day it got a lot better, either through a version update or better moderation control. I was even able to clear the old filters and not be flooded anymore. These pfishing attempts from Nicole and a few other names before her are the first ones I've seen in a long time. I just wish I could delete them from my PMs, for some reason that option isn't present at all.

- I tried the Matrix, it didn't seem to exist :/ Then I tried Frendica, and found out that my ISP blocked the main Frendica instance. I'm too lazy to use Tor and wait for the slower bandwith to load Frendica, or to find out other Frendica instances and search from there.

- Probably the latter; the person, background, and outfit (when they didn't change it) look too consistent between images for it to be AI.

- I got the first one yesterday and was mildly annoyed that you can not block the sender of a PM directly from your inbox - as you can with authors of post responses. Had to actually click that stupid profile (after reporting it) and block it from the profile page.
  
  I've read that it's multiple accounts across instances, so blocking would be tricky. I've had three so far and I keep getting different photos with each one, it's really weird

- I'm pretty sure that's Thunder. I haven't tried it myself though.
- I'm using Thunder. I switched to it from Voyager. I'd say Voyager is stable, but boring. Thunder, on the other hand, has more bugs, but is also more customizable and ultimately looks better.
