In one unusual outback town, everything is subterranean – from churches to campsites. As the world heads for 2.7C (4.9F) of global warming, should we be heading underground?
I drove there coming from Woomera. I was in a 1975 fj50, the small box-y type. There was a huge headwind, and I ran out of petrol about 5kms out of Coober Pedy. Luckily, it is slightly downhill into town from that direction, and I literally rolled into the servo on the edge of town.
No, it was fairly difficult actually. Gearbox was off, cylinder timing got eventually worse no matter what I did, and the steering column just wouldn't stay aligned. Fun car for a while though. Ended up leaving it parked in an inner suburb unlocked hoping it would get stolen so I could claim the insurance. It didn't get stolen. Ended up selling it for $1500.
