Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrapped up a call with his U.S. counterpart midday Wednesday, a senior government official told CBC News.
It's the first time the two have spoken since U.S. President Donald Trump launched a trade war yesterday with devastating tariffs on all Canadian goods.
The details of what the two leaders discussed are not yet known.
Vice-President JD Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick were also on the call, the government official said.
The official said discussions between the two sides will continue throughout the afternoon.
Hold the line. Don’t capitulate to monthly pauses. Whatever is being asked will never be enough. The idiot wants to tariff our exports for the cash, then he wants to annex us and take the resources for himself for free.
Trump backed off with automotive tariffs today (for 30 days) because the big 3 wanted him to. I am curious if the steal and aluminum will also be backed off of for the time being. We here in Canada need to say fuck that shit we can get our cars from elsewhere we are going to tax the shit out of the parts being made here. I know this is not a good idea but we cannot have Trump pulling this shit.
Drop the tariffs and we'll allow US banks to operate in Canada, allow American cars to be sold here, ban all exports of fentanyl, and stop booing your national anthem.
It may seem like a small thing but it's nicely symbolic of America losing its international reputation and standing. At this rate its its soft power will be demolished within the year, and its economic and military might will soon follow.
