Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday U.S. President Donald Trump will hold off on levying tariffs on Canada for at least 30 days after Canada made a series of commitments to improve security along the border.

The country can let out a collective sigh of relief — at least for now.

To get Trump to shelve his punishing tariffs, Trudeau said Canada is reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel and stepping up its co-ordination with American officials to stop the flow of fentanyl.

Still not going to set foot or spend a penny in that fascist shit-stain of a failed country. Canada needs to take this as a wake up call, the USA cannot be trusted. Ever, For anything. And Canada needs to pull its head out of the US's ass when it comes to foreign policy as well.

  I don’t know what the long game of the US ruling class is, but I do believe it’s for the US to be isolated from its neighbors and (former) allies.
- I've canceled a two-week road trip though the United States next fall. I would have spent a few thousand on food, accommodations, and gas during my trip. Not anymore!

- Absolutely, I am doing the same. I hope the various provinces keep good on their plans to strengthen Canadian business and not go right back to the way things were. This should be a wake up call.
  
  I don't think we'll be as rushed, but as of today that appears to be the long term trajectory, yes.
  The Canadian and Provincial Governments probably don't want to make moves to upset the orange baby right now, but by slowly adjusting Canadian industry to be less reliant on the US, it will be greater leverage for us if it comes time to properly re-negotiate a trade deal.

Trump wasn't answering Trudeau's calls, I think maybe Trudeau had to use the back channel

I don't consider $1.3B in spending on border security for a 30 day pause as a victory here. After 30 days, what's the next thing that Trump is going to manipulate our country into doing? This is a test of our sovereignty and we are losing.
- That $1.3B wasn't demanded or promised today. They did it preemptively in mid-December to avoid this whole situation.
  They committed $200M and bunch of drug/border theatre today. Basically just allowing Trump to save face for caving.
  
  I guess we'll know who caved depending on whether the fucker applies tariffs for real in a month or not.
- We should be beefing up our borders and military not because Trump demands it, but because his existence as President of the US demands it. Even without him, Democrats don't play nice with Canada and work to decimate our industries for their own gains as well. I didn't see Biden removing tariffs imposed by the last Trump administration, but I did see him increase them.
  If we can keep the orange psycho off of our backs while we sort shit out, and improve what needs improving at the same time, I can only see it as a win/win for Canada. 30 days is a lot of time to keep hashing out deals with other countries, and frankly, we should pull the trigger on tariffs and other measures regardless of what Trump does next.
  We need to treat the US like the hostile foreign state they have become, and act accordingly, if we want to maintain our status as a sovereign nation.

To me, it's already dead. You don't put a gun to a friends head, say "give me your wallet, you know what, maybe I'll kill you anyway, I've always wanted you dead, but here's 30 days" then go back.
You don't treat friends this way. We can't depend on America in any capacity anymore.

Canadians stood up to the bully and the bully turned tail and ran home crying to mommy.
- I feel like Trump is grandstanding.
  He shot his mouth off, Canada did some stuff (mostly in the fall fiscal update), he looked tough for his base, but relented at the 11th hour.
  That last minute save means Trump doesn't have to deal with the sustained economic impact of tariffs. He got to stir the pot and see how much he can get away with.
  Coincidentally, Mexico got the exact same deal. We're gonna go through the same song and dance next month.
  But it's a good wakeup call for US allies: it's time to start looking for other markets and building trade deals with less volatile partners.
  
  Yea, we don't know what happened in the phone call. I don't think Trump was expecting us to fight back, he would have taken any deal to safe face and say he won. The important part is that all of us don't forget what happened. Regardless of what happens next month, America threatened us, we can't go back to the way things were. I am going to continue to choose Canada first, fuck the States.

  These are lip service concessions to Trump that technically meet what he was asking for while denying him significant economic leverage. From Canada, into the US, a total of 43 lbs of fentanyl entered - compare that to the 21,148 lbs entering through Mexico.
  Trump used the fentanyl bullshit as a pretext to enforce tariffs while not violating the letter of the law of the trade agreement he negotiated. He literally doesn't give a shit about fentanyl and instead wanted economic leverage.
  Trudeau has paid lip service to the dumbass fake reason everyone knows doesn't mean shit and said "You still wanna go bro" to which Trump declined to elevate it to a tariff exchange in violation of the treaty.
  This was a huge loss to Trump but nobody tell him that to his face or his whiney little removedass will be embarrassed and start lashing out even more to look like a strongboi.

So now we get to hear about it being "maybe" for the next 4 years

Until this point, Trump has framed the threatened tariffs as a way to hit back at Canada for the ongoing trade deficit and supposed inaction on drugs and migrants crossing the northern border into the U.S. — his stated concerns about banking fairness are a new development.
- He basically just got "solutions" (read: cheap theatre) to two completely imaginary problems. The banking thing is nonsense that he made up and US banks don't even want.
  Trump caved, Trump lost. It was pretty apparent he was caving earlier today when the White House starting calling this whole thing a misunderstanding -- and when Mexico agreed to do something they've already been doing for two years so Trump could spin it as a win.
  
  So if the banking thing is nonsense why did he bring it up twice?
  He is dumb as a bag of nails, but when he tells you what he wants, believe him.
