A plan to trial the removal of about 50 car park spaces in Hobart's CBD to make way for bike lanes has received an "overwhelmingly negative" response from the public, the Tasmanian government says — announcing it has pulled $170,000 from the project.
Transport Minister Eric Abetz says there had been an "overwhelmingly negative" reaction from businesses on the street and shoppers who use existing parking spaces which would have been affected by the trial.

wild to me how businesses will piss their pants about losing street parking that so few cars can even fit on when it means dozens more can now come by bike. cars can always park in the back/in the garage, way more people are able to come if there's vehicle-free ways to do so
Here's a legitimate question for you FC folks. Has anyone ever thought about attempting a fund raiser for Metropolitan areas that have little to no bike lanes?
Bike lanes on roads are practically free. For example, when repainting the road after resurfacing maintenance. It doesn't take more paint to mark out a bike lane than it does for car parking.
Bike infrastructure at its core is a political issue. If you follow cyclist money, you'll soon find it spent on bicycle advocacy groups. It's the best bang-for-buck and addresses all the other barriers, like shop owners complaining about the free public parking they're not paying for.
