BREAKING NEWS: Amazon workers around the world on strike [2:45 | Nov 24 2023 | Progressive International]
Good. People can wait a few days to get their packages if it means better working conditions.
Also just not buy things from Amazon until the strike is over. Real stores exist!
(I say this as a recluse who buys almost everything online)
Most of the time sellers on Amazon have their own online storefront
Same, but I've got away without buying from Amazon for 5+ years now, so I'm pretty sure anyone can do it.
A couple of times a package I ordered from some random website would come in an amazon box, just because they incidentally use the service, but that was it.
I will openly admit I should be much better about not ordering so much stuff online.
Nothing will come out of that strike. It's just 1 day and then back to being a wage slave. If anything, it will prove to Amazon that they, Amazon, are pulling the levers. In order for a strike to be effective, it has to last until changes are agreed upon which is impossible without a strong union.
I cannot express how much I love this. Jeff Bezos is an evil piece of dog poo... actually, that is an insult to dog poo.
You can say shit on the internet. It’s allowed 😀
I did say shit, my statement is about shit. ;)
Poo sounds dirtier, probably because I associate it with actual poo, whereas shit I just associate with, like, stuff
He doesn't run Amazon anymore.
Yeah he's only the single largest shareholder, he has absolutely no influence at all
Poo serves a purpose. And a good one.
GOOD. Fuck Amazon and their union busting bullshit.
Oh can not wait for Amazon blaming the strike for any and all issues for the next year or so.
Well. There go the Black Friday profits.
Why? People can still order at "discounted" prices, their packages will just arrive a little late.
I'm sure actual profits will not suffer too much.
Gosh darn it!
Probably just later deliveries and new hires or more robots.
It only really works if they keep striking. A one day strike is lame
Let's hope the striking workers can afford to live without pay before Amazon cave in and pay up!
...Oh wait I forgot it's 2023
If they can't live without pay, what they should really do is unionize.
That's exactly the problem and the reason this strike will accomplish nothing, yes.
Do you have any concept what it's like for any fledgling union?
"Lame" shows your ignorance.
ebay's usps shipping may not be as fast as prime but it's fast enough for me.
Yep, they're surely not at all scrupulous but I use them all the time now, and indeed I try to buy from specific sites if possible. Amazon is the devil and they've had enough of my money.
USPS delivered 8 prime orders in two days today 🤷 are we scabs?
I'm mean, to be honest, yes. I haven't purchased anything from Amazon in years. It was an adjustment, but easier than you think. Most times, I just wait a little longer for free delivery of something I don't care about getting in two days anyway. One of the other changes I made was getting a membership to a Costco type place that has local delivery for my household stuff like cereal and toilet paper. You should give it a shot.
I wonder how ebay treats their workers. I'm trying to find a good alternative but ebay is the next best competition basically.
eBay doesn't have workers, it's a marketplace that facilitates transactions between sellers and buyers
Fuck Amazon.
About damn time!
Wait, Fucker Carlson made a good point? Broken clock is broken at least once a day I suppose.
I haven't kept up much with fucker "punchable face" Carlson but from what I've heard, after being fired from Fox, he has started to backpedal on a lot of things he said and is actively trying to salvage his "journalist" career
Just to play devils advocate; his leaked texts confirmed he never believed some of the stuff he said (which makes him more of an asshole).
I wouldn't be surprised if he was pressured by Murdoch etc. to push certain narratives.
No he isn't. If anything he's gone more Info Wars style.
twice a day! don't you dare take away that extra one from Fucker
He often presents populist ideas, even when they aren't in line with his normal rhetoric.
I think he does it to grab attention or appeal to people with that idea. He then spews a ton of well-polished half-truths and straight lies to make whatever point he was after in the first place.
It's not uncommon for anyone to agree with a sentence or two from him out of context, but in context, it's all garbage.
Seriously, it's "twice a day" - because a clock stuck on 1:13 will be right in the AM and PM.
24hr format would be once a day. It's perspective all around
I did say at least once a day.
I don't want to presume Fucker is right more than that.
not as much as I was hoping for.
Amazon spends obscene amount of money to discourage these strikes. It is a continuous war each year.
More will come.
This strike is sponsored by Amazon so that 99% of their business keeps on making money by creating a distraction.
Joke or fact?
Conspiracy theory, I think.
This happens every year at least for the last 4 or 5 years.. My deliveries have never been impacted.
Their B2C prodit margins are razor thin. (Or they used to be, before they started fuckery with the prices.)
The majority of their profit comes from AWS which is running like half of the internet.
Ok guess my remaining gifts will be late.
Wow you bought everything from Amazon?
No but I did buy a few items. Usually I get most of it done early and have a few after black friday
If BF has lower volume due to inflation, this will actually result in more profit for Amazon due to reduced wages.
Maybe we could all get used to lower volume then if it's for the greater good
The actual boss move would be to quit in masses and found a competing company to actually bring down Amazon. But of course all of them are utterly incapable of anything like that.
I just started delivering for them a few weeks ago and it's decent pay and easy work. In fact I'm scheduled 4 10 hour days of my choosing and I usually get done in 8 but still get paid for 10 hours. $24/hr.
I don't know if I just work out of a good location but like 90% of what that video said is bullshit... and our location definitely is not striking.
Like the video hammered on carbon footprint, meanwhile Amazon is completely converting its fleets to electric vehicles. I'm in one right now, on my lunch break, typing this.
Feel free to AMA. Dumbass people downvoting because reality doesn't align with your misguided, counterfeit morally superior anger. Nothing says removed like downvoting without engaging.
You've worked there for... a few weeks? And you're declaring that the reasons for the strike are bullshit? Bless your heart and good luck being exploited.
I always think my new jobs are so great at first, then some bullshit always happens to remind me how it is still just another job
I never did delivery but I was a packer running 4 10s at 14 an hour and god it was unbelievably unbearable. I constantly had to hold my piss and the job was so boring just standing there in a line, unable to listen to music or even talk to your neighbors most of the time without getting a talking from your manager. Seriously worst job I ever had, if I was still working there damn right I'd be out there striking.
Delivery must be a much nicer department than packing. Also I know for a fact the strikes are real I have a friend in it currently.
Why the fuck would they not let you talk to people around you? How does making you miserable increase productivity?
I imagine music, if it’s on headphones, might be some kind of safety hazard.
I would think a good manager might allow a speaker at a reasonable volume, provided a group in the area will not complain about the music choices of others. Then you have arguments the manager has to deal with. So I might understand the reason for that policy.
EDIT maybe you give each person an hour to play the music they want. At their station, on their device.
I can't comment on packing, only driving, but I think it's a sweet gig.
Dumbass people downvoting because reality doesn’t align with your misguided anger.
At the time of my reply your comment is only 7 minutes old and you have no downvotes. Very weird thing to try to preempt.
If you're viewing from Kbin, you can only see downvotes from other Kbin users. If a user from another instance downvotes it, it will not show up unless you view the post on the original instance.
I had like -5 in 5 minutes with no replies.
Lol shilling for the biggest company in the world for $24 an hour? Calling people removed for calling out your bullshit? Fucking shameless lack of dignity. I can't imagine someone being this much of a dumbass, thinking your anecdotal evidence means anything when we have so much verifiable, proven scumfuckery from amazon. Piss bottles on shelves? Warehouse workers being locked in during storms?
No one called out my bullshit, neither have you? Everything I said was factual.
Lol shilling for the biggest company in the world for $24 an hour?
Let me ask you something, do you buy things from Amazon? If the answer is yes, then the hypocrisy is off the charts.
Source: Trust me bro
You should see the account history, lol - it's pretty much ALL "trust me bro" and anyone who factually calls them out on their shit gets told they're an idiot, a moron, a "dumb dumb," etc.
Give it a minute, the "you're an idiot" replies are incoming . . .
Your source is what? Some dumbass video? Lmao.
You're assuming that your reality is the same for everyone.
No, I'm actually not, I'm stating what I know for a fact.
misguided, counterfeit morally superior anger
you could also say "workers should just be happy with what they have."
nothing says removed like...
wait, I thought we were the angry ones
I just started delivering for them a few weeks ago
Lol
Your personal experience doesn’t matter when people that have much more experience than you and actually understand what's happening in the company tell you.
You’re just too stupid to know, Dunning-Kruger effect here.
I can give plenty of examples of bad employment practices working at Amazon. Your one little example is literally meaningless.
You’re just too stupid to know, Dunning-Kruger effect here.
In what way am I wrong? I'm willing to hear out your counters. If you have none, then that "Dunning-Kruger effect here," applies to you.
Found a scab!
why is on fediverse if corporate scab ..
also who upvote
There’s things you can talk about on here and there’s things that you can’t. If you mention that you like Amazon, everybody that has no clue about anything and that just reads articles with no real experience anywhere will down vote you. With that said I hope this strike works out for them. Anybody have the actual numbers? Hundreds or thousands definitely ain’t enough.
Honestly, Lemmy seems worse than reddit, people actually just upvote and downvote based on feels instead of facts. Or things that sound good regardless of accuracy. Probably going to be done with it. Too many idiots here.
