  • Name-calling, nice. Notice I haven't called you any names.

    Here's the thing: You're pro-censorship. I'm anti-censorship.

Disengage. We're not gonna agree. All good, friend.

  • No full source. I couldn't find a good article that wasn't just police facts, so I had to write it myself. Info came from Wikipedia, CNN reports of the arrest, and a book (unfortunately again, pro-police) that I read, called "CRACK99 : the takedown of a $100 million Chinese software pirate." (available on annas-archive.org)

All of them painted him as some kind of evil on society, so I just had to write my own, more sympathetic article. I was really hoping to find some in depth pro-pirate articles on him, but nope....

  • Oh I like that!

  • I don't know. I'm assuming it wasn't Photoshop though.

  • Great points! The government always seems to conflate stuff to make what they are doing seem more logical. But let's face it, the government was working for capitalist interests in this prosecution.

  • When someone’s working on just trying to stay afloat, it’s hard to justify paying again and again just to rent joy. In that light, piracy isn’t rebellion; it’s survival.

  • Ahhh, ok. I haven't heard of that here in US yet, but I'm sure it's probably already happening here.

  • I haven't found much info, but if he hasn't been released early and had to do full sentence, then yeah, June this year. And he's supposed to be deported to China immediately after release.

  • I don't know what that means.

  • Now they have a model where you purchase a license and keep that but updates are subscription based. Your license lasts one year but you can run the software in perpetuity. You can download updates for that year and you can extend the license for $36 to download updates for an additional year.

That's much more reasonable. I could almost be onboard with that if I liked the software enough.

  • Thanks! I'm def gonna spend an afternoon going down this rabbit hole!

  • Love it. Any idea how he did the that weird lighting/special effects on his face? I love the lighting and I'd like to recreate that in my own vids. Guess I have to research that now haha

  • Ahhhh, Atari.....now there's a name I haven't heard in a while...

  • I have never ever heard of rental water heaters. Can I ask where you are?

  • My point is I am seeing words like "Nazi" and "Fascism" thrown around for the the tiniest of things now. It's becoming a common complaint/insult thrown to anyone that doesn't fall in line with group Lemmy-think.

Yes, real nazis and fascists are scum. But calling someone those because they don't fucking like your choice of phone or because they drive a car you don't like is a bit extreme. And I see Lemmy moving that direction.

Being an asshole is still allowed. Now I am all for blocking people with opinions you don't like, or even blocking them for something petty and silly. "Banning" them is uncalled for.

But it's Lemmy, so I know people don't take criticism here well. lol At the end fo the day, i don't give a shit. Extremist can run the platform into the ground. People will leave, we'll find other platforms, and Lemmy can stay a small niche group of echo-chambers that yell at the world because it's not molding to their vision.

Lemmy is not the only forum around, and I don't see it growing much if people keep censoring and being so extreme. I don't care enough to really fight for it either way. I'm fine either way, friend. :)

  • Think about your words there. Let's say that you were getting banned by republicans. And they're reasoning was: "Good. Stop allowing the human filth to hide behind honeyd words and start punishing them for their actual opinions"

See how that works? I don't know if you are in the US, but here in the use, we do have freedom of opinion--even if it's an unsavory shitty opinion.

  • Yep, I'm never going back.

  • Ugh, that's frustrating! I haven't seen anything like that in my area, but I'm sure it'll come.

  • Fair point. I don't mind paying for something that's worth it. But way too much stuff is just becoming bloated and expensive.

I was actually paying $7 a month for Microsoft Word subscription. At the time, having access to it was helpful, and my workplace/school used it. But fuck that noize, I canceled that today too.

LibreOffice all the way for me, baaaby!!
