Something that I realized about the fediverse is that you seem to be able to criticize the USA as a whole, but if you criticize the Democrats you get downvoted. Democrats suck they are not sacred cows
  • ok, you win! this is by far the smartest response. everyone else is like lets tear shit down without an actual plan of replacing at the same scale.

  • nice, even more self-mutilation talk. lets remove the opposition without offering a viable alternative. that'll show it to these fascist pigs...

(i've lived this shit through too. it hasn't panned out yet either)

  • Mozilla deletes promise to never sell Firefox data.
  • It's pretty funny, because Firefox was like the best browser of the late 2000s, until sometime around 2011 they became adware for a decade just to make a comeback as a privacy focused browser again. So it's not like this hasn't happened before. I always wondered peoples newfound enthusiasm TBH.

Edit: I swear this happened when they switched to the rapid release cycles and FF went from version 6 to 20 in a few months and at one point it became super slow and came with unwanted ad extensions. It's almost like the internet was scrubbed of this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox_version_history#Rapid_releases

  • This is not true. Zelenskyy made himself very clear: It is absolutely justified to question the value of diplomacy (2014 to 2022, covering 3 presidents) if it leads to more violence and annexation.

Trump's first language is english yet he's the one who could not articulate a single thing to guarantee lasting peace adhered to by putin. Instead he talked about the investigation of his russian ties as something that traumatized both him and putin. The guy is so demented at this point, he's really letting the truth slip out.

  • also, if we ever got so lucky to get rid of this this mess, it won't the MAGAs who will do the cleanup.

  • All they achieved with this ambush is to show the difference in quality between Zelenskyy and trump/vance. The contrast is stark. Those two guys would have shat themselves in a reverse situation.

  • Video : Trump Rages at Zelenskyy in the White House
  • Few takeaways:

    1. JD Vance is talking over a tired-looking trump who can't follow the conversation (See, him trying to correct Zelenskyy on the date of Crimea's annexation, claiming it was 2015, then responding to being corrected on the date that, "I wasn't there". Like he was there in 2015, LOL).
    2. This was a preplanned ambush that is the most cringe fucking thing I've seen in the last 5 years, from MTG's fucking boyfriend (I wish I made this up, I really do), attacking Zelenskyy for not wearing a suite, to which he responds by saying "I'll wear a costume after the war is over. Like yours, but maybe better"
    3. JD Vance is really really bad at acting. He theatrically exclaims how the Oval office is being dIsReSPecTed!!!111!!! but with like a 5 second delay and with limited enthusiasm. All it does it tells you that this was the plan all along.
    4. Marco Rubio had a Dr Birx/drink bleach kind of moment there.

Overall the only news here is trump is really really declining cognitively. I wonder how long it will take NYT to notice that....

  • At least it will be well documented for future historians
  • Except that what we are living through isn’t the collapse of the Roman Empire. It’s the Birth of the Roman Empire and the collapse of the Roman Republic.

Counterargument: the leadership change is well thought out, but the economic part isn't at all. The US system is built on consumption => the first thing people cut back under existential duress is consumption. I still don't see a well hashed out plan on replacing consumption with something else to drive the economy. Of course the US could go and start annexing new territories to maintain "growth" but I suspect it isn't really a sustainable approach, and thus far they just let trump talk shit about it as a tool of distraction rather than a concrete plan.

TL;DR: empires need to have viable economies. The US isn't ready to switch away from a consumer society, and scared people don't consume.

I guess the difference is consent. Something his victims didn't get to provide either.

  • I used to watch his show 2018-2020, but I put in on my never-watch list after he invited a bunch of antivaxx "researchers", who were low-level PhDs (meaning recent grads, who left academia/research for blogging[!]), and said stupid things. Also, in general BM's takes on medical issues tend to be highly misinformed, bordering the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Maher being the aging narcissist cliché, always reminded me of some of my high school teachers and some of my med school profs when they bashed my generation [they raised] for being dumb and lazy. It takes a narcissist to not realize that dissing a generation raised by yours is always self-criticism. BM is even more pathetic about this because he both manages to diss millennials (and now GenZ) about being terminally on-line, and consistently make all his young generation bad references from Twitter.

  • What would happen if Americans stopped buying new consumer goods for a month?

The current hostile corporate takeover in the USA and the clear loss of political power of the common people, I started wondering what happened if people used consumption as their leverage. Since the system is designed for continuous growth, what would happen if a mass movement of people stopping buying new non-essential consumer goods?

It would send a much stronger message than angry public protests. Thoughts?

Edit 1: Received some fantastic responses one of these highlighted February 28th as the "National No Spend Day" that we can consider the rehearsal.

*Do not make any purchases Do not shop online, or in-store, No Amazon, No Walmart, No Best Buy, Nowhere!

Do not spend money on: Fast Food,Gas,Major Retailers Do not use Credit or Debit Cards for non essential spending

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Only buy essentials of absolutely necessary (Food, Medicine, Emergency Supplies) If you must spend, ONLY support small, local businesses.*

This movement is the definition of equitable, not spending means everybody can contribute within their means, and if you can't afford to buy shit anyway, you're already doing your part!
