  • I mean, I imagine there's still a window where you can ask for it for free, but you make an interesting point. For many people, it has lowered their cost of food. I'm not sure all of them could have found free food as easily.

  • No, I was agreeing with you. People don't want to acknowledge the truth (ie: their car is too big to be safe, they voted for a dangerous felon). It feels bad emotionally. Most people resolve the cognitive dissonance between "I'm a good person" and stuff like "I'm probably going to kill a kid with my car" by lashing out or making up excuses.

    Yeah that's a common problem for a lot of people. Cowardice and complete refusal to admit their own shortcomings. Most people would rather double down than admit they fucked up

    Too many places throw out perfectly good food and that should be a crime.

    There's an app "too good to go" that lets you buy some discounted food at EOD, and there's probably other similar things out there.

    Where I used to work at a supermarket, I made friends with the deli guy and got a lot of food before it was thrown out. Management didn't like it, of course.

  • I don't think I'll get it. Maybe if it's on deep discount on PC eventually, and it doesn't have horrible DRM, and the reviews are good.

    I didn't really like gta5 that much. It's very on rails / Simon-says in a lot of the stories. I guess they're going for something cinematic. I'd rather have something more like an immersive sim.

  • I think it feels fiddly to people who already know a thing or two about mechanics, but most of the fiddliness can easily be ignored or barely paid attention to and you can still manage to play and have fun.

    I mean, this is true, but if you ignore enough rules you're essentially playing a different game. I talked to someone once who "played DND" but didn't use skills or spell slots, and I think they just let casters interpret spells based on the names. That's so different it's arguably a different game. Or at least as different as a Chihuahua and a husky.

    I agree with this, but note those systems are far more crunchy than DND. Something like Fate goes in the other direction, and I think is why it's better for fast games.

    Though as an aside, a downside of Fate is it's so open it can cause a tyranny of the blank page effect. DND puts you in a pretty small box, and that can be helpful for people. The small decision space is a positive for some kinds of players. Though if you were doing Fate, you could just tell people to pick from some core ideas similar to character classes.

    but 5e is pretty damn good at it while also being popular enough that people have heard of it and are interested in trying. That last part is just as important as being technically good on paper.

    This is also undeniable. Someone who's going to half-ass it will drag down a game in any system.

  • Its perfectly reasonable for someone to be proud of where they come from because the overall experience there shaped them as a person in what they consider a net positive.

    It's not "perfectly reasonable" to be proud of that. It's common, but the whole dispute here is people saying that it is unreasonable.

    Many people consider a personal accomplishment of some sort a prerequisite for feeling proud. Being born somewhere is not that. You can see other people in this thread rejecting being proud of a sports team they don't play for.

    (There's also pride like LGBT pride, but that's more of an explicit rejection of being told to be ashamed. And surviving while queer is something of an accomplishment.)

  • There’s no song, novel, or individual that is created without outside influence and in the vast majority of cases that influence comes from a village/city/country. You literally wouldn’t exist as the person you know if you were born somewhere else.

    This is true but seems irrelevant to the point. You wouldn't exist without the sun, but no one's out being proud of the sun.

    Because being a citizen of that country/city means you are inherently responsible for and add to the culture of said country/city.

    A lot of the flag waving types I'm thinking of, the maga hats et al, are making the country worse. If only they were responsible (as in, accountable).
