Software engineer and farmer living in rural Japan

  • I don't like talking (edit: aloud, to be clear) that much, in person or otherwise, so I like data modes.

  • I would love to have no-till going, but it's also not reasonable for me. Actual mulch is uncommon in Japan and cardboard just blows away in my area (even with 15-20cm long U-shaped staples in multiple places per piece and on joints; it be windy here). Do what you can now and don't worry about not being the best or perfect.

  • This is my experience as well. These days, fewer than 4 spaces is downright unreadable to my aging eyes.

  • I used to walk by that building quite a bit. Place creeps me out (not for any supernatural reasons).

  • I added one other SDD to dual-boot linux, but it's otherwise the same as when I built it in May 2020.

I was looking at upgrading the video card before all the prices went to shit. I'd need to get a new mobo to really make it worth the effort. I'm not sure adding more memory would really do a lot.

My previous computer was a laptop since I knew I'd be moving across the world and I got it in late 2014 or early 2015. It technically still works, though it just sits in a closet.

I'm thinking I just want to buy a higher-end laptop next time and just use this machine as a server. If I can do some gaming and video editing on it, that's really all I need that's intensive. I'm also debating whether or not to live in Japan full time or see if I can get work authorization somewhere in the Schengen area and just live in Japan part time. Bit of a dream with jobs the way they are now, though.

  • It's disappointing. We should be going for renewables in the long term and nuclear in the mid-term with existing plants being brought back online with appropriate safety. Coal is super disappointing.

  • I was scrolling through the comments before posting about it, heh. I used to sing it at karaoke quite a bit.

  • Destillat is good in both versions, I think, but I definitely prefer the Das Ich version.

  • I think it's differently good but still prefer the original. I think there's something more compelling in the arrangement and orchestration of the original.

  • Wages have also mostly not kept up with inflation that went nuts starting around Covid times. Some companies have been doing raises, but a lot haven't been able to keep up with inflation.

  • Is that an arvo-only activity, or is anytime OK?

Arvo is the one that took me the longest to figure out when first hearing it.

  • Why? In which situations would this be actually ambiguous and, in that set, in which situations would the disambiguation actually be necessary for some real reason?

  • semi-solid state

    Mushy state? Gloopy state?

  • I got noro when I was around 20 from food at a family gathering. I ended up in hospital on fluids because I could not drink anything and was vomiting at least once an hour and had diarrhea several times a day. I was so weak I could hardly move.

  • It's also worth pointing out that self defense in Japanese law only covers getting out of the situation. If someone hits you and you hit them back instead of getting out of the situation, you've just gone from a victim to a participant in a fight.

  • words are spelt

    Words are not fish! /s

Spellings can help people understand a word they don't know in some cases. This is especially true for Latin and Greek words in the language.

    and pronounced

OK, whose pronunciation will it be? India probably turns out the most programmers who speak English these days, so enjoy your new spellings and entire new sounds and distinctions that don't exist in your variety of English if it's not that one already

Efficiency is also not always the goal, nor should it be. I also know a lot of software engineers whose ideas I wouldn't trust running my kitchen let alone my language. You would, as other posters point out, probably be interested in conlangs.

  • Pork or even chicken also work fine, IMO.

  • I do not use AI in my personal life at all (unless some program I use jams it in somewhere and I haven't noticed yet to disable it or discontinue use).

If I have medical concerns, I talk to my doctor. If I search anything before/after, I only do so on actual reputable sites (e.g. mayo clinic, etc.)

  • I'll open a bottle of something nice when this happens, along with doing a happy dance, but I think that cork is staying put for now.

  • PieFed Meta @piefed.social

How do I block a community in piefed (just in my web browser and not any app or anything)
