bijansabet.com Public Service: The Backbone of American Democracy

An email recently sent to federal employees by Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was not only tone-deaf but emblematic of a profound misunderstanding of public service. T…

I liked this take on OMB's fork in the road email from a former venture capitalist and former US Ambassador. In his opening paragraph, he argues that ..."One line in particular [ from the email ] ... reveals a staggering ignorance of the essential work performed by those in government. It is not only offensive but also demonstrably false."

What is something you encounter everyday that is completely divorced from reality?
  • Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door–that way Lumberg can’t see me, heh–after that I sorta space out for an hour. I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I’m working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too. I’d say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

What is your internet service plan?
  • T-mobile home internet in northern Virginia, just across the river from Washington DC.

50 USD a month for about 400Mbps down/20Mbps up. For me it was a much better deal FIOS or Comcast and the service is generally pretty good, but in my location it meant dealing with with latency that spikes up to 80+ ms every now and again.
