  • i very much prefer separate boxes, but i do have one dual boot system, and i let windows do it instead of grub. it sucks, basically booting windows up just to get the boot menu to switch to linux, but hey. it works. even survived an 8->11 'upgrade' intact.

  • our pots phone and even the dsl carried over it was far more reliable than the current fttn/coax setup we have now.

    one outage in the 20 years we had the old phone line and dsl at the office. a cable cut 50 miles away nixed long distance for part of a day. when other providers (cable, wireless, cellular) were down and out, we were always still up and running.

    in the year we've had the new setup? several all-day outages of all phone and internet (and video for those customers); and many, many others that were less than a whole day or night.

    our theory at the time was pots has strict service reliability standards, but other distribution methods do not even when used by a local exchange carrier delivering voice telephone service.

  • last one i bought new was a 5670, early 2010. was about $75 for what was at that time the best you could get that didn't need extra power. it was by far the most expensive part in the pc (which i still have and use) i put together back then (sales and substantial rebates were everywhere back then)

    the last one before that, and only other one i bought new at retail, was an old agp ati aiw card for a pc-based dvr. i still have that system too, but it's long been obsoleted by digital hd tv and digital encrypted cable that requires their equipment.
