  • if that's truly from 1957, the whole setup would have several pieces that size. the 803 a few years later was three (one about this size, two a little smaller), plus user console, printer, tape reader. nearly 2000 lbs worth of equipment.

  • clear bios settings (power off and unplugged, momentarily short the jumper next to the cr2032 battery), pull card if you have integrated graphics on your cpu. if the system can boot back to bios--reset to defaults, do NOT enable xmp/expo yet. you may also need to disable secure boot for your os. once the system boots and shutdown ok, put the card back in and switch monitor over to it (and only it for now). then boot back up. see what drivers got loaded by the kernel for the video card.

  • when i lived in the city ~ 25 years ago, the 'upscale' grocery chain not only had wide aisles, but they were carpeted, too.. and short people like my mom (~ 5ft) could reach the top shelf.

    linux distributions used to do the same. now they dgaf, and some iso don't even fit on a single layer dvd.

  • the c64's lt.kernel hard disk had a data transfer speed of 38 kilobytes per second. compare to something like the st506/mfm (the first 5.25in hdd) with specs that max out at 5 megabits per second.

    which was a significant upgrade over the 1541 floppy drive at like 400 bytes per second (up to ~ 2.5 kilobytes per second with a fastload cartridge). atari's floppy drive was about twice as fast, apple's were even faster. commodore at the time insisted on backwards compatibility with their earlier disk drive, which is why the 1541 was so fucking slow.
