  • "loyalty cards" are common. stores (and each of their 369354764 data sharing "partners") get to track everything you buy and when. in exchange, you get token "discounts" on a small selection of products. some stores have done away with the actual physical cards, and use mobile phone apps or just the mobile phone number to track you.

  • the hardware manufacturer submits the 'bloatware' as drivers or other 'essential' software to microsoft to be included in the library of third-party shit microsoft delivers via windows update, which can then be segregated into automatically or optionally installed.

    hardware manufacturers are abusing this process to install bits (such as ads) that are not actually required for basic functionality of their hardware.

  • got a ways to go yet. ddg (search assist) says the total size of all content on the (public) internet is 120 zettabytes (as of 2023). that's 1.2x1023 bytes; you're "only" at 1.718x1019 bytes.

  • afaik the only things is the desktop watermark and being locked-out of the personalization in 'settings', so stuck with default theme, wallpaper, and so on.

    registry edits or using a pre-configured custom installer can get around some (or all?) of these items.

    updates will still be offered and installed.

  • the city needs to cover the solar panels, too. covering the cameras only took out their eyes, not their ears and radios. the company is probably dragging their feet on removing them because there's still some value in them staying where they are.

  • flight time is actually closer to 80-90 minutes between the two cities. plus taxi time of 10-20+ minutes at each end.. plus dealing with getting to and from the airport, maybe parking, and random tsa shenanigans inside.

    compare that to the actual 3.5 hour acela route that starts at ~ $74, that directly connects midtown manhattan to south station or back bay.
