  • I think the awareness depression / discontent thing is like the dunning kruger curve. That is the unaware are mostly content, as someone becomes aware they become increasingly discontent, often falling into some sort of nihilistic depression, then as one continues past that point in awareness they grow increasingly towards being content and feelings of internal wellbeing. This is a generalized statement, some follow very different curves.

  • Security through obscurity is a very valuable lesson. It's the king who rules in public who gets his head chopped off. This is why some find these more public personas to be placeholders for the real movers and shakers. If one stays out of the limelight they can weather changes and maintain control.

  • Dems have been mostly impotent, and same to their voting base, particularly this last election. They seriously have a fetish for shooting themselves in the foot the past decade. For better and mostly worse the right has been very unified and a strong base. All that said I'm personally quite disenchanted with both parties.

My dream is a science based system in which all policies are tested to see if they increase the HDI, GDPPP, and decreasing environmental impact or some optimization of those three. Similar to science it would be in perpetual revision whenever there's sufficient evidence to infer a policy or structure is no longer operating or operating as well as another. One can dream, for better or worse nearly all nations right now are enslaved by the political beliefs of people long dead.

  • I mean so are social networks mostly and most search engines and so on. Name of the game is to provide a service to gain people's attention to serve them ads and / or collect their data. Either that or you pay for it up front and they still serve ads and collect your data.

  • I mean there's almost no secret sauce about these AI's currently which is why open source models are nearly as good. We are totally free to set up a nonprofit kinda like Wikipedia where people donate to train and run AI models for the public based on open source datasets. We're now seeing people like PewDiePie kinda getting the ball rolling.

  • I mean we are glazing over the massive fact that they've controlled the house and the Senate as well. A president who doesn't would likely face immediate and harsh backlash otherwise.

  • I'm still not fully sold that it appreciably does affect air quality, I'm aware it's not zero but is it causing like cancer and birth defects in people around the powerplant? I think you and I are more aligned than the others on this thread.

  • I feel like there's a reasonable optimization. Everything has an environmental cost, even the production of green energy infrastructure. I think we can reasonably compare and contrast the probable lifetime impact of an energy source, including decommission and possible recycling. That is nothing is perfect but it's about what's the best we can manage given what the market can financially support.

  • Woop Woooop!

  • Yeah it's definitely in the range of just building a box and installing steam OS, maybe even of buying a pre-built and installing steam OS, that said I still find their efforts very commendable. I know they wanted to be cheaper but it's tough with the current hardware market.

  • Not saying you're wrong but the Japanese market is a special place for gaming products. I wouldn't necessarily project sales in Japan to the global market.

  • I would say Krita and blender are industry competitive but gimp has lagged behind. It's usable but clearly not on a professional level yet. That said, if enough people started donating a fraction of what they pay to use Photoshop that this would change very rapidly.

  • If enough people started donating to FOSS like GIMP like a quarter or an eighth of what they pay for these E-corps I'm sure we could have industry competitive software that's free and open source. Adobe has made their bed, they are ditching artists, essentially forcing them to give up their content to train their AI to change their business model to B2B. Now's the time to revolt and have the community build their own tools for themselves.

  • So at least 10,000 years.

  • And now you know how your parents / grandparents felt about what you were into.

  • Reminds me of Terrence McKenna's statement on being cool. I was cool, until they changed what cool was. It's always changing and it's always kinda cringe. Anyone remember LMFAO or essentially the entirety of the 80's? It's always been cringe. It's just that our cringe we considered normal and cool.

  • The Trump presidencies have really stressed what is legal and our response towards illegal action. This is a bit like when there isn't a law saying you shouldn't fuck a horse and then someone goes and fucks a horse so now we need the no horse fucking law.
