  • I know there are apps but probably with ads. I would have to go and explore. I don't really edit images on my phone. I guess if I was using a tablet I would have a Linux install.

  • Call me when they find a lab making prions, mother fuckers are nasty, incurable, and almost impossible to destroy. Anything tainted with prions essentially has to be melted at a minimum of 273°c but ideally incinerated at 1000°c just to make sure.

  • For frying certain things they're very useful for flipping or grabbing.

  • Depends. Jokes aside a cream colored towel would not be effective at hiding a shit puddle.

  • There's pretty good free software and websites with ads for cutting out images these days. Should work perfectly with an image like that. It's not as much of a pain as it used to be. On Linux I use defuse (io.github.shonebinu.defuse on flathub)

  • With what seems like millions upon millions of copyright infringements, seems like more than enough for a serious firm to take on. With some major copyright owners on board I don't think it would be as David and Goliath as you're making it out to be. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of these cases come to pass when these labs actually become profitable. I haven't heard any pushback on copyright for AI labs in other countries so far so it seems to be a uniquely western complaint although I'm more than happy to be proved incorrect. I honestly have no clue how copyright is managed in Israel, India, or China.

  • More so political power as money alone does nothing. There's always been that type of power and money is a representation of value and there's always been value and power so long as there's been minds. The first organisms to cause a mass extinction was photosynthesizing microorganisms. They poisoned the atmosphere with oxygen and nearly killed everything, including themselves. Of course they didn't do so for money or power or really out of any will but they are the first organisms to cause a mass extinction.

  • But money and power is more important than the environment we need to produce said money and power as well as survive. This will be the second time an organism has caused a mass extinction but the first time the organism self proclaimed that it was intelligent.

I come back to Taoism, that is suffering becomes possible when one becomes separate from the Tao aka the way things are, aka the truth. Like if I lie that I can fly unassisted and jump off a building then I have removed myself from truth and when I go to test this I will experience suffering. Humanity has separated itself from truth for a long time and now the bill is coming due.

  • Hallelujah

  • If only humanity was aware of their effects on the environment sooner.

It is odd how we have science, the most unreasonably successful mental constructs of mankind ever and we perpetually ignore it like if we plug our ears enough the information it finds we dislike will just go away. It's a bit like a child cleaning their room by closing their eyes so they don't see the mess.

  • The social contract goes both ways. It's the duty of the state to protect and serve the citizens and it's the duty of the citizens to ensure the state is doing so. Noblesse oblige, to be noble one must oblige or put simply power ought to be given to those who serve the people and taken from those who do not.

  • Seems easy enough to prove with a court order. Short of that though I've seen people get models to perfectly complete content inferring that information is in there somewhere or at minimum the model is willing to go fetch that information breaching copyright. I am still curious if this is an issue in AI labs elsewhere or if it's primarily a US / UK issue.

  • I mean yeah depends where one points their mind but still seems like the transition. I guess I'm thinking of minds trying to understand reality and how that often culminates in a compassion and acceptance practice. One for instance can choose to become increasingly aware of celebrity news or politics and will likely be trapped in that cycle you are mentioning. These days I personally don't feel discontent like in the past, maybe disappointed like a parent might be of a child they know has so much promise and potential but that's because I still choose to have attachments and desires. The goal is to expect nothing and accept everything, reality is going to be as it is regardless of our personal attachments or desires but I'm still hung up on wanting wellbeing for all minds. Generally I'm pretty content in the human ride, I wish it was better for others and I do my part to help.

  • I just meant the topic of cancer which seemed to be a focus. Also I've noticed a continual jump between power plants and stoves or other gas household appliances. You are right though that geography and wind patterns definitely play a role. If a buffer zone didn't matter that would mean one could put a gas fired powerplant on the other side of the earth and they would be at the same health risk as if they were camped out feet away from the exhaust which simply isn't true. There's some degree of distance where the effects become negligible. Generally speaking though no one wants to live near power generation of nearly any sort or high power lines which have their own issues.

I don't think anyone is advocating for us to go back to a time before electricity. PV, solar thermal, hydro, geo thermal, and wind are good, some depending on how they store power, ultimately nuclear is the king and hopefully one day fusion will come around to solve the issue once and for all. Maybe if we find a novel and efficient way of generating antimatter that would be the true ultimate. Coal and gas still have a role to play in many areas not well suited for greener energy and where people get the heeby geebys about nuclear. It does cost more but that could generally be managed by government subsidies.

  • To keep on topic what I could find was 17% of all lung cancer cases in heavily impacted regional studies. That is communities within a 2- to 5-kilometer. It seems fairly insignificant or inconclusive for people further outside that range. Seems like there just needs to be a buffer zone around said gas fired powerplants which honestly I think everyone wants. I can't imagine home prices near any form of powerplant or data center are amazing.

  • There could be a class action lawsuit. I wonder how other major players in AI are managing this, particularly labs in China, Israel, UK, Singapore, and India. Of course each nation had its own laws around copyright. Like isn't there an equal pushback like this for Chinese AI labs or is it a uniquely American or western thing?

  • Yeah gimp has always been on like this cusp of being really good. I'm not sure if it needs to be forked or a full rewrite or just more funding. I know the biggest complaint has been the transition although that's a tough egg to crack. It shouldn't be a Photoshop clone but also not so dissimilar from industry norms.
