  • So that article about AI cheating we saw a few weeks back is still doing the rounds. I had missed this Rationalist W in my first read:

    I then fed a chunk of text from the Book of Genesis into ZeroGPT and it came back as 93.33 percent AI-generated.

    So apparently we're pretty close to instantiating the voice of God through the hallucination machine, which I'm sure is pretty neat.

  • If anything I think this is pretty solid evidence that they aren't actually using it. There was enough of a gap that the nuke of that PR was an edit to the original post and I can't imagine that if it had actually been used that we wouldn't have seen another flurry of screenshots of bad output.

    I think it also suggests that the engineers at x.ai are treating the whole thing with a level of contempt that I'm having a hard time interpreting. On one hand it's true that the public GitHub using what is allegedly grok's actual prompt (at least at time of publishing) is probably a joke in terms of actual transparency and accountability. On the other hand, it feels almost like either a cry for help or a stone-cold denial of how bad things are that the original change that prompted all this could have gone through in the first place.

    These people are antithetical to what’s good in the world, and their power deprives us of happiness, the ability to thrive, and honestly any true innovation. The Business Idiot thrives on alienation — on distancing themselves from the customer and the thing they consume, and in many ways from society itself. Mark Zuckerberg wants us to have fake friends, Sam Altman wants us to have fake colleagues, and an increasingly loud group of executives salivate at the idea of replacing us with a fake version of us that will make a shittier version of what we make for a customer that said executive doesn’t fucking care about.

    No notes. Perfection. Also love the commentary on how much of the current political moment is driven by the same forces - running the country like a business isn't just dumb because governments aren't businesses. It's dumb because the entire business ethos is cooked to begin with. Like, I cannot find a clearer description for the prevalence of dumbass fascism than the political ascendency of the Business Idiot.

  • See I would frame it as practicioners of some of the last few non-bullshit jobs (minimally bullshit jobs) - fields that by necessity require a kind of craft or art that is meaningful or rewarding - being routed around by economic forces that only wanted their work for bullshit results. Like, no matter how passionate you are about graphic design you probably didn't get into the field because shuffling the visuals every so often is X% better for customer engagement and conversion or whatever. But the businesses buying graphic design work are more interested in that than they ever were in making something beautiful or functional, and GenAI gives them the ability to get what they want more cheaply. As an unexpected benefit they also don't have to see you roll your eyes when they tell you it needs to be "more blue" and as an insignificant side effect it brings our culture one step closer to finally drowning the human soul in shit to advance the cause of glorious industry in it's unceasing march to An Even Bigger Number.

  • I mean past a certain point LLMs are strictly worse tools than Stack Overflow was on its worst day. IDEs have a bunch of features to help manage complexity and offload memorization. The fundamental task of understanding the code you're writing is still yours. Stack Overflow and other forums are basically crowdsourced mentorship programs. Someone out there knows the thing you need to and rather than cultivate a wide social network you can take advantage of mass communication. To use it well you still need to know what's happening, and if you don't you can at least trust that the information is out there somewhere that you might be able to follow up on as needed. LLM assistants are designed to create output that looks plausible and to tell the user what they want to hear. If the user is an idiot the LLM will do nothing to make them recognize that they're doing something wrong, much less help them fix it.

  • Yeah. The whole Gel-Mann effect always feels overstated to me. Similar to the "falsus in unus" doctrine Crichton mentions in his blog, the actual consensus appears to be that actually context does matter. Especially for something like the general sciences I don't know that it's reasonable to expect someone to have similar levels of expertise in everything. To be sure the kinds of errors people make matter; it looks like this is a case of insufficient skepticism and fact checking, so Hank is more credulous than I had thought. That's not the same as everything he's put out being nonsense, though.

    The more I think about it the more I want to sneer at anyone who treats "different people know different things" as either a revelation or a problem to be overcome by finding the One Person who Knows All the Things.

  • The continued polytopia mentions just keep reminding me of this take from Dave Karpf. Like, he's not talking about incredibly deep games here (no offense to the people who love them) and in the context of him trying to take on the reigns of Presidentissimo or whatever all the arguing and doubting about his gamer cred is obscuring the arguments over how weird this is to try and focus on. Like, if he was trying to claim he was a Go all-star or something that would be one thing. Even Chess has tradition behind it, even if it's actual utility for learning more general strategic thinking is more questionable. But Polytopia and Diablo? Really? If we did start apportioning political power to whoever can execute a basic strategy while clicking as fast as possible I think we'd all be bowing down to God-Emperor Flash or something.

    Anyways, even if we put my unearned strategy gaming elitism aside this is such a dumb argument to be having in the first place and I don't know that I can forgive Elon for making it part of the problem.

  • I mean, if you're talking specifically in context about people with vaginas instead of women then using the gendered term does exclude both women without vaginas and men with them who are probably a relevant group in that context. But seriously how often does that come up for you? How often is the most important part of the woman you're referring to her anatomy?

    And while "females" is probably just as accurate in most contexts it's also been poisoned with incel vibes at this point and it's gonna be some time before it can be salvaged for general use outside of specific biological contexts without sounding like you're about to unload a whole lot of baggage into the thread instead of getting therapy.
