I'm someone's favorite.

  • Boooooooo!

LOL no if you enjoy it that's cool, I just personally can't watch it. It's completely unrealistic and doesn't give the layperson a good representation of the skill.

I actually know a guy who was an early contestant and absolutely bombed on his first attempt. Fantastic knives though. It's his primary source of income and better than anything I've made. Just doesn't work well under pressure already, and the unrealistic goals they set for quick work don't take into account any sort of materials issues.

I hate when they use scrap metal for any kind of challenge because unless they really did a lot of prep work, shitty materials can be mixed in with good ones and you wouldn't know without being able to do your own tests beforehand that take time.

I wonder how many other hobbies/professions have this happen to them, where everyone goes "hey you would like X because you're Y" but it's a poor representation and they don't like it. Like nerds and big bang theory.

  • I make swords and knives as a hobby.

You can get these specific colors by heating the steel up. Getting these colors ruins the temper, though, and you'll have a pretty display sword that won't hold an edge. Perfectly fine if you never intend to seize the means of production, but I like to keep my steel properly hardened.

  • I view the show as an alternate universe kind of thing. "there but for the grace of good storytelling go we" because holy shit how do you get so many fundamentals wrong.

To me, it was clearly a generic scifi show that got rejected by studios until someone slapped the Halo logo on the front page.

It could have been watchable on its own, but as a Halo show, I'll pass. No hate to anyone who enjoys it, it's just not for me.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if they end up with less regulation than current consumer drones/rc planes.

  • I'm 112% for replacing old outdated and unsafe infrastructure.

However, a new, updated, far safer plant will not get built to replace this one. Or any that close in the US until some people die off or shit really hits the fan energy-wise and people get more desperate. This is the least favorable time to build "safe" things.

This plant needed to be closed, but something has to replace it. And unless people start forcing renewables, shit like this is just the norm. Plant closes, nothing replaces it except fossil fuels, emissions go up.

  • Unless you live in Ohio or Kentucky, lolno

  • I hate my own voice but I love explaining things to interested people.

No way I'd be able to make lore videos, especially when people like Installation00, Luetin09, Geetsly's, MetaNerdzLore, Eckhartsladder, and Nerd of the Rings exist.

Nothing new for me to add, really.

I could probably talk for hours about Stargate SG1 and it's spinoffs, there are a few channels dedicated to Stargate stuff but..... Content is lacking, in my opinion. One does a podcast though, and uploads hilights of the podcast which I don't watch/listen to so they probably do a lot more explaining of things there that don't make it into clips.

While I've gone through all of Luetin09's videos while awake, I like to throw a playlist on shuffle sometimes to sleep. Something about a British guy talking in a smooth low voice about tyranids attempting to overrun a location only for the whole planet to essentially split in half (CADIA STANDS/THE PLANET BROKE BEFORE THE GUARD) is just relaxing. Also FUCK Erebus.

  • If I remember correctly, the question was "why don't the covenant want the halos in this one (Reach)" or "why aren't they in this one" or something like that when we had just started playing.

So I went back and explained the history of the rings from 120,000iah years ago during the height of the Forerunners power, as well as where the flood came from, why the planet has only just been discovered by the covenant, and how the game (Reach) differs from the books and spoken lore established in games 1-3.

Funny thing is, I'm slightly wrong. He did technically ask me one other question, but it was an open question to the group "why do the Spartans look different except Jorge?" and I immediately went "are you SURE you want a full explanation?" to which others jumped jn and said "NO!" which was a little disappointing but not everyone enjoys lore dumps.

For a full explanation, read the forerunner series of books, the novelizarion of combat evolved, the fall of reach, the in-between book that tells us how anyone escaped to halo 2, and the Ghosts of Onyx. That last one isn't super necessary, but it gives you a neat look at one of the Shield Worlds from the forerunner books.

I think lemmy has a character limit so I can't get into a 3 hour typefest lmao

  • Several people have learned if I warn them an explanation will be long, I don't mean "oh I like long walks on the beach but after 2 minutes I want to turn around" long. I mean "heat death of the universe" long.

Example: someone asked me to explain something while playing halo. I told him to make sense of it I need to explain some history, do you want the long version or short version. Long version is long. They said long version. 3 hours later, they fully understood their answer and never asked me to explain anything again.

  • Well I'd be lying if I said it wasn't mostly this. The feeling of rejection.

But the others did cross my mind a lot when I was wondering if I'm picking up on signals.

  • Thank you! Every time someone asks me "well why didn't you make a move when X happened?"

Because I didn't want to make the wrong guess and get pepper sprayed, punched, expelled, fired, whatever. Because 99% of the time they aren't into me at all and whatever signal I think I might be picking up on is entirely unintentional or imagined.

I always assume the other person isn't flirting, they're just being nice. Or competitive in this case. And assuming this has never once led to me getting lunched or pepper sprayed or anything, so I'd say it worked well.

Also I still got married, just asked someone I worked with if they wanted to go hiking one day and surprisingly they said yes. (honestly who goes hiking as a first date I could have been a serial killer)

If you can't be direct with the person you want to be romantic with, then why are you wanting to be closer to them?

  • In highschool, a girl I fancied asked if we could play the awkward game, where the point is to make the other person feel awkward and bail.

Well her first two moves were taking off her bra under her shirt, pulling it out through the neck, and throwing it at me, and then sitting on my lap facing me.

I still did not get the hint.

I found out a few years later when she was going off to college and we were chilling on the couch reminiscing. No chance by then though for either of us.

Remember, when you ask yourself "how could you not understand that", people like me exist.

  • "suicide"

  • It's so weird how a lot of society went from "WOAH, government can't use these things to track me, I have a right to privacy!" to "WOAH, you try not to be tracked by every single company on the planet and 16 major governments? What are you some kinda criminal?"

I can tell you from experience you can use a garage worth of basic tools to make a gun, but not one that will be "print, assemble, fire" without extra parts.

I'd say about 4/10 times I go flying my 240g drone in the local park someone comes over to tell me I'm breaking the law. Weirdly they can never name a specific one, and it's always just "the law says you cant use that here". Never had cops called yet. Mostly people want to ask me how much it was and how I like it. A few have asked if I've tried dropping "something the size of a baseball" from it.

I have a buddy who works in a bank, says a ton of ag loans these days are for drones and renewable energy equipment. Even the owner of the field I live next to has one. I think it lives in his shed, it has 8 rotors. Looks like it could lift a skinny short person. I have exactly 0 concerns they will use it to spy on me or drop explosives on my house.

I'd love to have a drone with thermal/night vision. We get a lot of animals around here and I'd like to be able to see them (and figure out what they all are) without spooking them.

  • Given how often it happens in other industries, it wouldnt surprise me to find out that someone, somewhere along the line has an agenda to push and are trying to lump certain things into the same category as a thing people aren't supposed to like in order to get the thing that's only kind of related banned.

Heck, I personally know people who want 3d printing to be banned because "you can 3d print guns". I can make a gun with a trip to the hardware store and a few hours. The extra hours are to make sure I can use it more than once. I'm just using this as an example, it's not quite the same.

I also know people who have seen the drone headlines for Ukraine and give me the side eye when I mention I have a drone and can build my own at home. One coworker has even asked why I "need" to build drones and that having a bunch of hardware to do stuff like that is "sketchy". Drones are already being regulated into the ground over a few high profile incidents. And some try to lump rc devices into the same category. Sorry I can't fly my 8oz foam plane here, it's in the same class as 200lb agricultural drones with 12 rotors and I need special FAA authorization. You can build an ultralight aircraft in your garage and fly it across country without running it by anyone first, though.

I rambled a bit but my point is every time you see things being lumped together and you're scratching your head as to why, ask yourself "who wrote/published/shared this, who are they affiliated with, and do they have a reason to want one of these things or similar products regulated" and you'll see a surprising amount of shady bs going on that's all perfectly legal.

  • Honestly the only response to something this callous is "Wow, hey do you wanna check out this really cool blender?" and then shove your Defense Blender into their face.

    And somehow it's YOUR fault...

  • Hi, I'm someone who works on bicycles for a living!

    Basic maintenance such as

-checking tires for wear and cracks, keeping the bike dry and rinsing with clean water if it gets road salt on it,

-keeping the chain and sprockets lubed and cleaning them of debris if it gets caked on,

-cleaning the bearing races of debris and keeping them lubed (maybe go to a shop for this one if you aren't sure about it)

-and just generally not doing stupid things with it

and you will have a bike that lasts a lifetime.

Maybe less if it's a cheap brand like Schwinn or mongoose. But those steps drastically improve the life of any bicycle.

Worth noting: my main bicycle is a GT hybrid from 2014. It's not much of a step above baseline (at the time, GT fell off in quality) but spending a little time doing some online "research" into the parts on the bike will go a long way. You'd be surprised what both cheap AND expensive brands put on their frames. Cheap brands using mid-tier gear (instead of cheapest) , and top brands using the cheapest tourney derailleur you can find in a clearance bin...

I kind of got off topic a bit but yeah.

BASIC PREVENTATIVE BICYCLE MAINTENANCE WILL KEEP CYCLING CHEAP AF

  • Whenever someone is waiting for me to unload my groceries and move, I suddenly have the urge to check my messages and catch up on some blah blah blah. Doesn't really matter what.

The moment the person moves on, I remember what I was doing. Doesn't matter if they immediately do a u turn and snag it, that's not the point.

The point is I'm petty and you can do a lap.
