Cross culture colloquialism and dubbing?
  • No idea with Japanese, but in Spain, most audiovisual media is dubbed.

Comedy is adapted according to context, both the plot's context and the current cultural context. Jokes are changed to fit the scene AND the translation.

When you start watching them in their original language, usually English, you find that the OG is usually better. And I say usually because in rare occasions, the joke in Spanish ends up being better, at least IMO.

  • How do I poison pdfs against LLM ?
  • Image poisoning's general principle is to change pixels in a way were our eye can't notice, but that screw up the labeling by LLMs.

You can probably try to apply the same principle, poison the PDF in a way that only humans can read it.

Thing is, I assume you distribute your content on PDFs to make the content accessible to humans. That usually means having the text embedded for easy copy-paste and similar methods. Poisoning these might end up being counterproductive for your objective.

All this to say that No, I have no idea of a poisoning algorithm for PDFs

  • [Undiagnosed] ADHD and stress
  • Would going thru the effort and trying to get medication solve my stress related issues?

Solved? Nah, there's little to nothing to be "solved" with medication.

The sweet spot with medication can, however, bring one to a point where emotions are not as extreme.

Anecdotally, I noticed that I had anger outbursts after I resumed medication. I would notice the contrast of the extreme emotion on the days I didn't take meds, or when the meds had worn off.

So, in my experience, meds could help mellowing the reactions. Note that when I say meds, I've only had dexies.

    Tap for spoiler

Note this is an individuals opinion and is not intended to be medical advice. Please do your own research and talk to varied people before messing with your body

  • Will any UPS work with Linux?
  • Not really, under an area blackout the fiberoptic transmitters will stop working, so you won't be able to reach other areas/nodes even if your equipment has UPS power.

But, in general, the idea of a UPS is to provide enough supply to allow for an orderly shutdown, preventing equipment damage or data loss. Its not meant for long term operations.

For infrastructure and other critical applications, the UPS is designed to give you enough time to go start the diesel generator, and continue the operations.

As a bonus, some UPS have filters to ensure that delicate electronics get a nice, clean power wave. This is usually the case in UPS for data centres.

Btw, how are you liking down under's "revolutionary" idea of Fibre + Copper? Is it as bad as it sounds?

  • Why do shows on streaming platforms waste time with "previously on" recaps?
  • I'd also consider "volume quotas".

I'll assume that the show creators have a set format/time per episode. Recaps are a "good" way to have filler time, meeting the target episode's length without too much additional effort.

Personally, i feel like the recaps are somewhat of a spoiler to the episode. Usually these recaps are aimed at reminding you of things that you will need/want for the current episode (e.g. who was that character?). If you do remember the previous episode, these edits almost spell out what parts of the plot will be developed in the current episode.

I'd appreciate a solution like the one @vinny_93 mentioned, where the recaps exist, but I can skip them on demand.

  • What are some good party games?
  • TLDR; Use poker decks to clone 3 sets of Love Letter

    I'll recommend some boardgames.

Once you go over 7-8 players, the options are greatly reduced. The available genres become (mostly) limited to social deduction

Social deduction, all about trying to figure out other peoples cards. And lying, lots of lying.

    • Love letter, 6 players, 20 cards, ~13 tokens, for points
    • Avalon, 7-10 players, ~30cards, tracking mat/paper
    • Secret Hitler, 7-10 players, ~30 cards, tracking mat/paper, has a print-at-home version.
    • Ultimate werewolf/vampire/etc, ~10-12 players, ~13-15 cards, phone app (for narration, free)

*None of the above are very good for playing as teams (i.e. two ppl taking a single player spot)

Group Games games that do well with teams

    • Codenames, various versions.
    • Forbidden Island/Dessert/Sky - co-op game for various number of players

As a special mention, Challengers is a board game that allows you to create simple yet fun card drafting tournaments. There are two editions, each allows you up to 8 players, and if you have both they can be combined into 16ppl tournaments

For your numbers, you'd need to buy 2-3 copies of the same game. Not ideal, even if you have the budget.

I'd say, print yourself three copies of Love Letters, you can find the cards online, or just play with 2-3 poker decks. Its the best game in my library, simple yet deep. We've been playing it at least once a week for 3 years now. I've even managed to play once with a mob of disinterested teens ;)

  • Series: What are your ADHD Tools of Thumb?
  • Since the calendar has already been mentioned, I'll drop another of my tools.

I check my pockets every time I leave a space, and confirm I've got Wallet, Keys, Phone. I do this at any transition: Leaving the house, a taxi, the office, a plane.

Got kick started into the habit when I lost a big (for a kid) chunk of money. Felt so bad that I started the checks, and haven't lost any of those three in many, many years (ง’̀-‘́)ง

  • Apartment Audio Solutions
  • When I encountered a similar situation I tried with the ikea speakers (Sonos Based) and I couldn't get them to work without the sonos app, so I returned them.

I figured that a solution could be having, in each room, a mini-pc (RPi or similar) running RuneAudio and a set of speakers connected via audiojack.

I tried with 1 room and the proof of concept seemed to work, but didn't invest on getting the rest of the house work.

In the end went for a couple of portable Bluetooth speakers to have floating around the place. Cheap and simple
