Yes, the dogs are also communists.
I got a dentist appointment this morning 😔
I was actually looking at Fitzpatrick as she was recommended here at some point (post for a while back) and even though I would have to change my analysis type from Marxist to reformist/social I think I am going to go with her. The book is not that long and gives an overview of the revolution so I think it’ll be good. Thank you for bringing it up and engaging with my post.
I actually did remember Christopher hill and looked up his works, found that exact one and bought the ebook. While it is something I will read on my own time I don’t think it fits my project because, unfortunately, it doesn’t have a bibliography…
I was given no instruction as to how to check if a work is peer reviewed, at best I check the publisher, the author credentials, editors (regarding Rodney’s book, which I might have to use, at least for now), and the sources used. I also check reviews and see who made them, do they have “proper” credentials? As you can see, it’s a pain and there hasn’t been much direction given to us. I know the point is to increase our research skills, and I think I’ve done that, but I’m struggling on this part. I’m surprised it’s so hard to find Marxist historiography on the revolution, but here we are.
I have checked my school’s library system and Rodney’s book is there, which is neat.
I actually did see this book on a thread here on the Grad but when I was looking up reviews for it I found this: https://www.peoplesworld.org/article/a-peoples-history-that-is-less-than-inspiring/
Which gave me pause, if it was anything like Howard Zinn’s book then I’d use it in a heart beat but this doesn’t seem like the best analysis of the revolution. Unless the review is completely wrong, of course.
It’s a work I am willing to read but I don’t know if it’s good for the project. Is it peer reviewed? Also 900 pages is a lot to take on for a paper thats due mid December 😔
If it helps, the Dan Healey book covers the 1870s Tsarist era up to the 1930s. Marxist historiography tends to look at working class history of an era, don’t know if that helps at all.
I am quite embarrassed with the amount of questions and help I ask for, I feel like I should be able to do this on my own but I’m having a hard time. Although I am glad I was able to find one book on my own.
Any Books About the History of the Russian Revolution from a Marxist analysis?
I am currently looking at a bunch of books for a project I need to do. I need to find two books, monographs (peer reviewed!), about the same topic but from different perspectives.
The two analysis types I want to compare are Queer and Marxist historiographies. While I was juggling a bunch of topics I settled on the Russian Revolution because I found this book:
Homosexual Desire in Revolutionary Russia: The Regulation of Sexual and Gender Dissent by Dan Healey
Clearly it fits my Queer analysis and all other criteria. I have not read it yet but the reviews make it seem good. The problem I am facing now is finding a Marxist historiography of the Russian Revolution, which you’d think would be easy but for some reason I cannot find a proper work. I did see Walter Rodney’s * The Russian Revolution: A View from the Third World* but I do not know if it is peer reviewed, and the publisher might disqualify it from being right for my project (Dan Healey’s book is published by University of C
You don’t lol but in all seriousness the only conversation I had about Ukraine at all with family was when my stepdad asked me my feelings on it. I cannot for the life of me remember why he asked me this but what I do recall is bringing up Euromaidan and the Donbas. The conversation was incredibly short as I had to leave right away but I remember it ending with him asking if I thought Putin had legitimate reasons, I said yes and left (I did not leave because of the conversation, I needed to take the dog for a walk because a baby just entered the house and my dog hates young children).
I think the main thing is gauging whether the person is open to even talking about this or not, to my surprise my stepdad did (he and his family are Ukrainian, but I think only his great grandparents were immigrants) and even though we could not continue the discussion he hasn’t acted cold to me at all and still engages in political talk even if I find his opinions misinformed. I could gather from our brief talk that he was open to listening to me and giving background information tends to help understand the conflict a bit more, because surprise surprise a lot of people didn’t know about Euromaidan or the Donbas (I sure didn’t). I wasn’t able to talk about NATO expansion but that would be a good idea as well.
Depending on your situation, avoiding the topic at all might just be your best bet. I never bring up politics ever because of how insane my family can get, so sometimes you have to wait for them to come to you. Knowing your stuff beforehand and relaying that information in a calm and kind manner can go a long way.
That was QUICK
Is this one last hurrah until he has to go? I have to admit that this news makes me very fearful, this and the war survival pamphlets in the Nordics. If Ukraine uses those long-range weapons, is that the point of no return?

Donate to Save Anaam’s family from hunger and war in Gaza
Hello comrades,
I am sharing Anaam’s gofundme to hopefully help her campaign gain some traction. I initially found her on TikTok and her posts unfortunately do not get a lot of views of likes. She has messaged me from time to time about her and her family’s plight in Gaza and their current urgent needs. It is now winter in Gaza and she needs to buy clothes for her family (she needs 100 dollars). I have donated to her myself a few times but am strapped for cash for the month. I was hoping that by posting here if anyone had spare change to send her way or at least help me spread her campaign around.
Thank you all for anything you can do to help ❤️
Why are there so many thumbs down?
Last of year of undergrad and taking a language class. Also have to mentally prepare for the Canadian federal elections because I’m certain people are going to be totally normal during that time.
But what’s more, it is a danger to our strategic interests. Russia and China have seized upon the rising popularity of the term and its attendant world view –‘Global Southism’ – to damage the West’s reputation globally. By using the phrase ‘Global South’ unquestioningly, our policymakers advance the causes of our adversaries and undermine our own.
The West is damaging its own reputation, not that they had a good one in the first place.
I was helping my cousin with choosing and enrolling in classes for university (she’s going to the same one as me) and she told me I’d be a great professor 😭
Maybe it undermines her message for us, but to liberals her saying she was still voting for Harris was not good enough, and they came for her neck anyway (going so far as to question her queer identity, a group of people they claim to care so much about). I think her opinion reflects what a lot of people feel. To me this just feels like a step in the direction of further radicalization. Then again, I am a fan of hers so take my opinion with a grain of salt. My main criticism of her is that she still thinks the democrats are “the left.”
The coverage for this hurricane is actually insane and the conspiracy theories surrounding it makes it so much worse.
Don’t forget the wrong pronunciation of “Iran.”

They AI Question
“What are the positives and negatives of using ChatGPT (and other AI) in post-secondary?”
This is a question I need to answer for an essay competition thing, and while I do have ideas myself and from my professor when I asked for his opinions, I was hoping if anyone here had some insights to add.
Is it ethical that I ask for your aid? I don’t want to overstep. I would not use anyone’s name/usernames at all in this essay, at most I will cite sources on the matter.
While I think my current ideas about the pros and cons are good (more cons than pros in my opinion) but I want to know if I missed anything.
If needed, I will add what ideas I’ve come up with so far but for now I’ll leave that out.
Edit: I was tempted to post this in the “Ask Lemmygrad” community but I think thats a more educational community about communism specifically so I’ll stick to asking here.
I Attended My First Ever Protest
Maybe this isn’t significant to some but it means everything to me.
As someone with severe anxiety, and maybe some other mental illnesses, I have a hard time leaving my house. It’s already hard enough going to school and grocery shopping so being at such a confrontational public event. Last time I was at something even close to a protest was a pride parade many years ago and I wasn’t even in the parade self, just watching from the sidelines.
If you’re from Canada, living here, or just aware of current politics then you’ll know that a national protest called “1 Million March 4 Children” was being held today, September 20th, to protest “SOGI” and the “mutilation of children.” If it obvious this was a nationwide far-right protest to attack the 2SLGBTQ+ community, peddling the same conspiracy bullshit. Of course when these protest plans were made public many counter protests were set up. I, of course, battled with myself on whether I would go to the one in my area. The protest was going
Day 5 Semester 2 of Political Science (and History)
cross-posted from: https://lemmygrad.ml/post/1901054
I’m so late to posting this but I’m sure you all understand that life gets busy whether you’re in university or not. I was too tired to post on Friday and I spent the weekend rewriting my psychology notes. My note strategy is I have note book dedicated to rapid fire lecture notes while I have separate books to write down more structured notes with what was on the slides, the textbook, and lecture.
Anyway lets get on with day 5:
History class was nothing. It was good for me but nothing in the class was notable to write here. We learned about how to scrutinize sources when doing research, if anyone is actually interested in what thats like just leave a comment and ill write down what we learned in that regard. One comment that my professor did make was that apparently back in the day during the Great Depression Prime Minister R. B. Bennett would respond to letters from citizen lamenting about the pain the Depression was

Day 4 Semester 2 of Political Science (and History)
This is a day late again so if the POV changes that’s because I wrote the last half today.
So day 4 has arrived (past?) and this time I wont be skipping my History class as some interesting things were said. Most of this class discussed chapter 3 of Lynn Hunt’s History Why It Matters which focused on History being a discipline that was the domain of privileged men (wealthy white men), social and cultural History, and History and Citizenship.
History used to be about politics and statesmanship but more “recently” has shifted to being about citizenship since people of multiple backgrounds have access to academia that was previously barred from them. Is it perfect, no of course not. Let’s be honest, we all know there are still barriers to higher education that nobody seems to acknowledge. But thats just my own thoughts on the matter, none o that was said in class. Moving on, apparently women in Europe didn’t start making it into universities until the1920s vs women in North America w

“Ukraine: A War Crime – a book by photographers documenting the war’s first year“
I looked this up because Portuguese news was covering a gallery in Lisbon that showcases the photos in this book. I don’t think I’ve ever seen something like this done before for any war except maybe the very old ones.

Day 3 Semester 2 of Political Science (and History)
Today is going to be weird to post about as most of what was talked about in my history class was not interesting enough to write about here. I reread my notes just to be certain. Didn’t miss anything that I could potentially mention but for the most part nothing stood out. We honestly only talked about what a act is, how facts relate to the study of history, how they’re applied, the system used to study history, and a tiny bit about Napoleon. If you’re curious about the Napoleon discussion it was only brought up in reference to Lynn Hunt herself and how her main focus as a historian is how women were treated during the French Revolution and Napoleon’s rule.
Facts - Coherence - Completeness
That’s the method in which all historians around the world use to to do their research and make conclusions to whatever questions they’re trying to answer. I don’t think this is truly worth writing about here but if someone is curious I am willing to discuss it more in the comments.

Day 2 Semester 2 Of Political Science and History
Technically my second day was yesterday but I couldn’t post until today due to life getting in the way. I’m sure you all understand.
So in order of classes I will begin with my History course; as a quick reminder this is a level 100 introductory course so its not going to be super specific but we’ve already touched on interesting topics that I must share with all of you. Honestly I think its less about the content of the course and more so about comments made by my professors and how the course navigates leftism.
So far I’ve had to get three books for History while my Political Science class only required one textbook. I will list the three of them here and they can all be found on Lilgen very easily so thankfully I didn’t have to spend a dime:
First book: Lynn Hunt’s History Why it Matters
Second Book: Tatiana Seijas and Stuart B. Schwartz’s Victors and Vanquished Spanish and Nahua Views of the Fall of the Mexica Empire 2nd Edition
Third Book: Mairi Cowan and William Kelleh
Day 1 Semester 2 of Political Science (and History)
I just finished my first day of my second semester yesterday and here is how it went:
As some of you may know I’ve been going to university to get an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Political Science with hopes of getting my PhD soon after. I chronicled my first semester Political Science 101 class experience here as I thought it would be beneficial to me as a student and for those who were curious as to what goes on in the classroom. This, of course, was way back in January but now I’m back for my second semester which means a level up in Political Science.
This semester is a bit different than my first as I’m taking a introductory History course after having completed Statistics (it is unfortunately required for a psych degree). So instead of just posting about what happens in my Political Science classes I figured I’d write about my History class too. This may be the only History course I have for my undergrad as after this semester I’ll be blasting through the required cou
So how about that Republican Debate!
I’ve only caught clips of it and I’m not strong enough to watch in full so I ask how any of you felt about it if you watched it.
Portuguese news went over it briefly but I can only understand bits and pieces, from what I’ve gathered the whole thing was a shit show.
