How to escape from surveillance when watching television?
I currently use a large computer monitor as a television, and use a Google TV hdmi plugin to access content.
Rather than have Google selling all my personal data I would rather pay more for a privacy respecting alternative. Does something like the Vero V offer similar functionality, and if not what should I be using?
Ideally the solution should be family friendly using a remote to operate, and can access mainstream channels
Increase cost of second homes, reduce cost of primary homes
As the UK government puts faith in construction, one council has lowered costs by cracking down on second homes and holiday lets

This should be a blueprint across the whole UK.
Time to get serious with E2E encrypted messaging
Apple is likely to stop providing its encrypted cloud service to U.K. users
I currently use Telegram for my friends and family, but have reluctantly come to the conclusion that the UK Government is either reaching agreement for backdoors with messaging services, or is trying its hardest to.
I'm also on Element/Matrix. Before I try to get my contacts to join me on there, should I be aware of any privacy issues or is that a good place to head?
Separate dongle for internet using a hotspot can help. No system is perfect but Linux phone is an excellent first step
The paper recommends action to address the issue
You'd want to be using only Linux apps that weren't recording and reporting everything. Much easier to get in Linux than Apple/android
UK has 'zero chance' of reaching net zero by 2050
Achieving ‘net zero’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 is a target set in the Climate Change Act, with the UK Government pursuing even more stringent and specific intermediate targets from 2030. The term ‘net’ arose to address sectors with emissions deemed too difficult to become emission-free,...

Apparently on current policy the UK will only get to 57% reduction in GHG leaving a whopping gap.
Give permission. Don't give permission. They know where you are anyway
How I tracked myself down using leaked location data in the in-app ads, and what I found along the way.

An amazing bit of digital detective work here. Seems like Linux mobile is your only off ramp from being exhaustively tracked
Somebody was working on one but not sure it's live any more https://github.com/Flockingbird
I succeeded using linkding which I'm hosting on pikapods https://github.com/sissbruecker/linkding https://pikapods.com/
Help - create curated feed of archived webpages using open source product
Hi, I'm trying to add value to a community by creating a curated feed of webpages about a specific topic. For example, if it was Scottish snakes (it isn't) then I would archive every news article I saw on the topic, and host the feed on a webpage or similar.
I've tried Wallabag, and I can't find a way to publish the whole feed - just an individual article.
Any suggestions for other open source tools for this?
Just uninstalled Jerboa after using Lemmy on Firefox. So smooth! 👍👍
Another one here. Inveterate distro hopper now firmly anchored with fedora
Fairphone still updating old handsets
Fairphone proves any Android OEM can match Apple's six years of support.

Fair play; I don't own a Fairphone, and I'm hoping to keep my current Android alive long enough to be able to go straight to a Linux phone. But this is another demonstration of why it's good to support outliers
