  • Because the claims of people involved with cryptocurrency are historically very untrustworthy, that's why.

The thing that got me interested is that BlueSky says it's "decentralized" but the more I look into it, it's only "decentralized" using a very narrow, highly technical definition of the term "decentralized".

Cryptocurrency is the same. People with a financial stake in cryptocurrency often say it is "decentralized" but it's only true if you accept their extremely narrow definitions of what that word means.

  • A PDS still requires BlueSky's servers

  • I don't understand it at all. Where are all the supposed blueskys? It's so easy to fact check.

  • I'm moreso curious if it federated in a literal sense. Is it even possible to participate without using bsky.app's servers?

  • I am really excited by platforms like Ghost allowing people to comment on posts with the fedi account they already have. Instead of someone submitting an video or article to Lemmy, we could comment directly on it with our Lemmy/Piefed accounts and communicate directly with the creator without a third party involved.

  • "Chat app" like texting/whatsapp?

    Or "chat app" like Discord/Slack?

For the former, Signal is going to be the one your friends and family will actually use. For the latter there isn't anything really approaching the same level yet. Matrix/Element is making a good effort but absolutely not there yet, especially on mobile.

  • This is actually really funny

  • Yunohost is great, Portainer is also useful.

  • /r/im14andthisisdeep

  • idk OP... this is a lot more effort than I put into things idgaf about.

  • Falling asleep watching TNG or Voyager I can understand, but every moment of DS9 must be savored. You sir are worse than Gul Dukat.

  • What are you paying for BackBlaze and Cloudflare?

  • Do you have a source for that? This chart says otherwise:

  • Windows is only 12% of Microsoft's revenue, and between Mac, Linux and ChromeOS, it really doesn't have a monopoly anymore on desktop (about 70%). On top of that, desktop usage in general is decreasing, and is already less than 50% of all web traffic.

What I'm saying is that I think it's safe to say something else will likely "kill" Windows long before Linux ever becomes a serious threat to it.

  • It wasn't.
