  • Been looking forward to this one. Might finally be time to switch over. I wish there was a Graphene build for it.

  • Surprised a Lemmy instance doesn't have it honestly

  • Yes a little bit if you have an Nvidia card, and Bazzite has the option to boot right into a Steam Deck like interface which is great for controller gamers.

To be clear Mint is a totally fine choice too, but for gaming and especially for a total Linux newbie Bazzite is the choice.

  • OK great thanks for the reply and yes it was a color one. I don't really need color but it still scared me. My Oasis is almost 10 years old now I assumed the tech would have improved dramatically.

Looking at the Boox Go 7 now I think as it's the most similar to the Oasis without being Amazon

  • Bazzite 100%. It's the best out of the box gaming distro, and bonus points for immutability (not that your friend needs to know what that is).

  • I'm not really looking for specs I'm looking to visually compare.

  • deltachat will leak metadata everywhere

Got a citation for that? Genuinely curious

  • I would like to see 8K for movies in cinema, especially for remasters/digitizations from existing film negatives and archival purposes.

While I wouldn't say no to it, 8K on a TV under 75" is not going to add much value to the average consumer.

  • Right, exactly. It also takes 3-4 seconds to load in which time I could have just middle clicked and loaded it in the background. Maybe on mobile I'd use it but only in rare circumstances.

  • Every platform is going to have someone trying to exploit it.

Reddit turned to shit because the people who own it allowed it to.

  • What exactly are the AI features everyone is talking about? The only one I've encountered is the "long click to preview link" and it's... not super useful but far from annoying like Copilot.

  • I upvoted you, but I do feel it's only a matter of time before the open source community outpaces Apple as well. Just a few short years ago the "year of the Linux desktop" was a joke. Now for many, Linux is unquestionably the better option.

Imagine having the option to be-exactly-like-MacOS-if-you-want-but-aren't-forced-to (basically what's happened with Linux and Windows this year). It would be game over for Apple, at least from a software perspective.

  • Zorin is a good OS but IMO it's a little too simplistic for most people who know what an operating system is.

But as the video gets at, the question of "when will Linux be better than Windows" is solidly "today". MacOS is probably still "better" for someone fully invested in the Apple ecosystem. But Linux is not far behind that either.

  • Thank goodness, the fan has a mind of it's own sometimes.

  • He seems to be active in replies to his own posts. I recall him being frustrated by a lack of tools available for high follower accounts like they apparently offer on Twitter.

  • This was an unusual (For Alec) and remarkable episode. I found it very inspiring. Also Alec is one of the few YouTubers I know of on Fedi. @TechConnectify@mas.to

  • I can see you care about this a lot, so please tell me; in your opinion at what point does a PC cease to be "self hosted"? When it's carried across the property line? Maybe if the electricity bill is paid by a roommate?

  • wow 9/11 changed everything
